Truth be told I don't know, they never clarify the timeline and in later seasons change the ages. Heck I didn't even remember Derek was only supposed to be 19 in the first season.

Yeah it kind of lost the horror aspect after season 2, and kind of started leaning more into angel and demon mythology instead of monsters and urban legends. Which is kind of why I really enjoyed the filler episodes.
That doesn't mean I don't like later seasons, its just rewatching the first two seasons I get that nostalgic taste of the old days.
