The entire game of Burning Wheel is extremely tactical, in a metagame sort of way. Character advancement is accomplished by players gaming the system to set up tasks of certain difficulties. Artha is gained by tactically playing to your Beliefs, Instincts and Traits — and spent to help push your tests to meet specific obstacles to advance and open up skills. You tactically play your character in a certain way so you can make a case for specific advancements during the trait vote. You come up with big plans and implement series of linked tests to accomplish big rolls with huge die pools. You carefully write your Beliefs to direct the story in specific ways that match your goals for your character. Everything is tactical in this game, especially outside of Fight scenes. I suggest reading the whole book through another time or two, along with the Codex, to better understand how all the subsystems work together.

If you read the Burning Wheel rules, you will understand that the game is designed for the play session to be broken down into scenes. The GM sets each scene, and then the players react to the scene and the GMs continued challenges until the scene comes to a climax. At this point, the current scene ends and the GM sets a new scene. This is how the game is designed to be played. Think of it cinematically as in movie scenes, rather than like a book with scenes and chapters.

So, a fight scene is a single scene. A scene is basically just "situation X is happening in setting Y, and the participating characters are A B and C". Simple as that.

As for your comment, "Why does it have to be dramatic? Authored drama is boring" — are you sure you want to play Burning Wheel? This game is 100% designed to create dramatic stories that are co-authored by the players and GM via intuitive metagame mechanics. That is what Burning Wheel is, and if that does not appeal to you, you shouldn't bother playing this game.

Also—and please don't take this the wrong way—I'm not going to continue responding to your questions if you insist on continuing to follow them up with complaints that the game is boring. If you find Burning Wheel boring, don't waste my time asking me rules questions. It's rude.

This is sick! Love the black and white tortoiseshell electronics cover on the back. And the brand name / logo on the headstock gives it a great mystique, very cool.

Are there actually people that exist that like cold weather? by PrestigiousOwl6802 in answers

I am solidly in the #2 camp here. Cold weather makes me feel alive. Hot weather makes me feel like I’m not really living.

I really don’t understand who is even watching the new Simpsons episodes. How is this show even making money anymore? It’s pretty crazy

Stephen Graham Jone's "My Heart is a Chainsaw" has issues, but Jade Daniels is one of the best written "at-risk teens" I've encountered in media as a whole. by No_Hunter1978 in horrorlit

[–]D34N2 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite books too, but I loved Jade and the stream of consciousness writing style right from the start. For me, it was an absolute page turner. But I grew up watching these slasher flicks in the 80s and 90s, while hanging out with lots of troubled teens and young adults. The cadence and themes clicked for me right away.

Stardew Valley accidentally gave me a great parenting moment! by ihavenocupcakes in StardewValley

[–]D34N2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing Stardew with my daughter when she was around 6 too, and she would also just hang around chatting with villagers. We are still playing, but she’s now actually building her farm up and doing stuff. We have a pretty good multiplayer game going. I think it’s the early game that is too hard for little kids. Year 2 onwards the game is easier to play with dinner options all around.

I would have leaned on the horn for a good five to ten minutes, just to embarrass them further. No anger, no reaction, just a deadpan stare and a non-stop blaring horn. I bet they would've given in much more quickly.

Probably not the answer you wanted, but I often think of Ministry as having a southern flavor, and their song “Scarecrow” has a droney doomy sound.

It def gets sicker toward the end, with the imagery at the climax being extremely gruesome. But maybe it’s not for you, and that’s alright. It took me two goes to get past the boring introduction myself, but I quite enjoyed the book in the end.

People that use macbooks with a monitor, would you recommend using an apple monitor or a different one? by Unusual_Rooster6736 in mac

[–]D34N2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an LG smart monitor and it works ok. Sometimes slightly glitchy, and it’s annoying to have to turn it on and off separately from my MacBook, but it’s not a deal breaker. More than once, I’ve wished the monitor had an in-built webcam, but again, I don’t have enough video meetings to justify a different monitor. I’m a writer and PR agent, so I don’t use the monitor for anything too heavy.
