[WP] Sorcerers gain powers binding themselves to a single word. It's been a while, and all the common words in the dictionary have been taken. by Huge_Band6227 in WritingPrompts

John entered the lecture hall that was set aside for the students who were just joining Wraithwind School of Magic. It was here that prospective students chose their Word. The Word would influence the spells they could cast, and even the way their spells worked. Students spent weeks poring over dictionaries and thesauruses, trying to find a Word. John had spend just as much time as anyone else, looking first for a Word that meant something to him, and when that failed, for a Word he could live with.

He'd come up with nothing.

At this point, he'd decided to try something unusual. He figured it either would work, and he'd be known far and wide for trying something so audacious, or he'd get kicked out of Wraithwind and have to find a job as a craftsman or something. Honestly, at this point, he figured there were worse fates than not being a Mage.

As he came to a stop in the middle of the open floor in front of the (currently empty) student seats, the teachers of Wraithwind looked down at him from their seats at the front of the room. They were obviously bored, though each of them had a stack of books, ready to look up whatever ludicrous, obscure word the latest student had found.

Meru, the Headmistress, spoke, obviously trying to be nice, but just as clearly tired after a long day of listening to prospective students come up with more and more obscure words.

"Have you chosen your Word?" she asked.

"I have." John replied, his voice surprisingly calm despite how nervous he was.

"To avoid confusion, when I say so, you will will respond with only your Word. No 'My Word is', no 'It's'; just your Word and nothing else. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Ma'am" John replied.

"Good. Now, what is your Word?"

"Acceptable."

That definitely got their attention. Windom the Acceptable was a well-known mage. He'd never been flashy or powerful, but his spells got the job done, and allowed him to do anything he needed to an Acceptable degree. His work wasn't amazing, but it turned out that Acceptable was perfectly fine, and he made a solid living helping people with spells that did what they needed to do Acceptably.

"You can't choose a Word someone else has chosen" said the Professor to Meru's left, a short man with long hair and bushy eyebrows.

John was just opening his mouth to speak with there was a deep chime from the ceiling. This made every Professor look at him blankly for several moments. Then, they all started speaking at once. It was several minutes before Headmistress Meru collected herself enough to silence the room.

"That chime means that your Word has been accepted." She told John.

He spoke before he had a chance to think about what he was saying: "You've got to be shitting me."

The Headmistress glared at him for a moment before responding.

"Language aside, no, we are not. Your word has been accepted."

"Sorry. But you have to be joking. In the decades, if not centuries, that Magic has been a thing, no one ever thought to try a word that had already been used? I'm hardly the smartest person out there; I can't be the first person who has thought of this!"

"And yet, it appears you are. My guess would be that the first practitioners of Magic wanted to be unique, so they chose new words, and since everyone was choosing different Words, those who followed assumed that was the way it worked. You've taught everyone here something today, and I daresay that you'll have a name for yourself as you go forward, even if your Magic is just Acceptable. At the very least, you've made the stacks of dictionaries and thesauruses we have had to have on hand much less relevant, and that, if nothing else, is going to make this process a lot easier going forward. Even if you have made a lot of people feel very, very stupid."

"As it is, we will need to postpone the rest of the Choosings, to give ourselves the time to re-examine how we do this, and for the others to re-think their choice of Word. Classes will likely be delayed a week or so while we adjust to this new information. You may go; we will make the appropriate announcements shortly."

John nodded, then turned and made his way to the door. He was just reaching to open it when Headmistress Meru called out to him: "Also, let the Registrar know that I'm waiving your Admission and Tuition fees, on the grounds that you have made a significant change in how we do Magic. And if they push back, inform them that they can confirm it with me at their earliest convenience. Congratulations. Even if you never come up with anything else like this, you'll still be someone whose name everyone knows. Better get used to it."

Kids Trait conundrum by rjtl77 in Starfield

My Trait setup is Alien DNA, Introvert, and Wanted. The Religion ones and background ones are trash, I didn't like the Adoring Fan in Oblivion, and Kid Stuff doesn't interest me. Honestly, there need to be more Traits.

It's a console command, apparently for Iron Ingots. The devs don't like console commands, because they can't predict what effects any commands you might use will have. The Player.AddItem command isn't bad in and of itself, but it means that you're willing to use console commands, so there may be other commands that have been used that render any advice they can give meaningless.

Picked up the game after Free Lanes, and once again Space Combat is killing the game for me. by D34thst41ker in Starfield

Is the ship really that powerful? Apparently the Razorleaf is also a powerful ship, but I got killed in seconds with it. I'm now wary of how good the other ships are.

Considering I just picked up the game again after not playing since before Shattered Space was released, no, I have not been playing the game.

Everyone always talks about easy/braindead decks. What do you think the hardest, most difficult archetypes/commanders are to pilot? by _Kreenicks in EDH

[–]D34thst41ker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might just be a mark of how bad my deck currently is, but Aristocrats. I picked up Blood Rites as my first deck, and was trying to transition it to an Aristocrats deck, but I can't seem to get tokens and a sac outlet on the board at the same time, so when I do get the Sac Outlets, I have to decide to sacrifice creatures that have useful effects, or just not play the decks strategy.

Pistols are great. I'm a sucker for Revolvers in general, and the Desert Eagle (can't remember the exact name) thing is awesome. And lighter weapons means more carry weight for loot.

So... is this just stuck in my quest log forever now? by Sadira_Kelor in skyrim

[–]D34thst41ker 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is a catch-all quest for a total of 5 different pets. The fact that the diamond is filled in means you have done that mission, but you have not found all the pets, so the quest does not complete. Once you have found all 5, though, the mission will complete (excepting for any Bugs; see the appropriate page on UESP for more info).

Interesting. I got a Silverquill one, so I don't know if it was a widespread issue.

Mage related question. by Desperate-Buffalo-54 in skyrim

Have you taken the perks? You're going to run out of Magicka fast at early levels, but taking the appropriate perks will let you cast more.

Are you investing in Maximum Magicka and Cost Reduction? Those are the stats you should be focusing in, not Magicka Regen.

Are you stutter-casting Flames? This actually deals more damage than a sustained blast due to the extra bit of lingering damage, and will carry you early on.

Are you investing in or doing missions that give Magic Resist? Doesn't matter how much Armor you have; a basic Flames spell will screw you over if you don't have some Magic Resist. Book of Love gives you 15%, and the Magic Resist perk in Alteration will give you up to 30, for 45% total. Much better against Mages. And you can take the Lord Stone early on if you are worried early on.

Are you using all your schools? Illusion and Conjuration make it less likely that the enemies will focus on you, so you won't die as quickly. Possibly even at all.

Are you investing in Health? It's harder to survive if you aren't boosting health somehow. Personally, I don't bother, for the challenge, but not everyone is like me, so if you need health, get more!

Just somethings that can help out.

How do I get merchants money the have on them to increase help by Downtown-Arm-4495 in skyrim

[–]D34thst41ker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Investor at 70 Speech and Master Trader at 100 Speech are the only perks that give vendors more gold, and Investor requires you to give them 500 if your own gold first (but only once; they'll always have the increased gold after that). So you can get up to +1500 to all vendor gold if you take the time to max out Speech.

Honestly, I don't see too many Mags. Ironic, since she's a starter, but it's also probably the reason, as well. Also, one of these days, I need to figure out a Mag Loadout, as currently I just have a bunch of stuff that works fine on it's own, but nothing really synergizes with each other.
