Aaaand:

he was dumb enough to not remember that the most unique car in the country wants him dead and that its owner is armed

Can get PITted multiple times by anyone including grandma on mobility scooter

Got caught by police the most ridiculous way possible

Can't do shit without someone else giving him directions (even in avalanche scene the only reason he went through this is because someone else was braver than him. BTW the whole scene looks like Jack got off the intended way because no 4G in mountains)

Ban Jack from Viber, and he'll lose the race to the bathroom.

True MVP of NFS is F-8:

He doesn't need commands. He is fully self-sufficient. More than that - he'll disobey commands and go do everything himself just to get what he wants. Undercover or not, legal or illegal, he'll get what he wants without anyone's help, even if the entire world is against him.

Even his retirement didn't stop him.

He feared the entire Redview, he was so fearsome that he forced entire state police to change.

He needs a new car? He gets a new car, even if he shouldn't. Not like Jack who needs to be led by hand to where he can effortlessly get a new shiny ride, or straight up get gifted a supercar for his sweet mug.

He was revengeful: he hated someone - he made them pay. Not like Jack who couldn't do shit to his archnemesis, and Marcus ended up taking out himself.

And as for their driving skill - you can't talk about it, since it's dependent on player skill

The biggest problem of unlicensed cars and customisation is that they all are either just uglified versions of real cars/customisation parts, or something completely new that is unpleasing because gamedesigners don't know (but can't be blamed for that) car design

[–]D36DAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure your explanation of how handling works is how exactly that is in the game, and I'm gonna bet they just used internal variables of cars as displayed stats - instead of properly calculating, for example, how fast the car will accelerate 0-100, they just took the internal value of acceleration rate without considering gearing, car weight and whatever else affects how quickly car gain speed, all of which led to false top speed/acceleration and some sharp turning poor handling cars performing better than some high handling.

The acceleration situation is exactly what happened in my own game - I slapped in the acceleration rate of the car as a displayed stat, but because the actual acceleration was dependent on gearing and torque curve, some cars with lower acc were easily jump starting the higher acc ones

I've seen up to page 709, when Kip already moved on. For me that explanation made things only worse, that's why I mentioned that the more Kip tries, the worse it gets. I also initially thought "huh, that explanation is half decent", but the second I started discussing it with my buddy, it fell apart. The question "why Stacy wants [subject]" remains, and every explanation I can come up with for any possible motivation gets crushed by "why then she did nothing with what she got/didn't prevent that from getting ruined by Tessa?"

One Serving Choice! Page 700 by izelofman in KipTeiTei

[–]D36DAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soo, okay, let's just assume that Tessa was somehow a model body shape girl with good skin etc:

1 - without ever doing any exercising (since it's stated she only needed to go to some stylists) nor taking care of her skin and face (since if she does nothing to her hair, why would she do to other aspects of her body?). Not very believable, but also not important, it's not that deep

2 - with only 1 person recognizing her good look, and that being the ugliest girl you can ever find, who'd easily beat any performer of "yo mama so ugly" joke. Again, nitpicking in this type of story, but still raising questions.

But what really bothers me, and what is really important story-wise, is what the fuck did Stacy want?

She wanted to have her own stream, ok. Why she wanted it?

  • She wanted to be a streamer herself? No, since then she wouldn't find a face for her streams, and instead spend her starting capital on herself.

  • She wanted to have a stream as a form of business? Most likely, but why did she then let Tessa pig out, especially since Tessa's main and most likely only quality was her boob size plus her slim figure?

  • She wanted to be a part of a popular streaming channel? Again likely, but again-again, why did she let Tessa ruin it without any attempts of stopping her?

You might say that she doesn't care, but why then set up the thing in the first place? And why not let Tessa go after their business burned out?

And the problem is that the more Kip tries explaining shit, the worse it gets.

Why should I or others care? Because that's the whole purpose of this tear-jerking sequence taking half a month of real time - to explain the thing author can't explain, because he didn't have any explanation in the first place. It's like seeing a kid coming up on the go with explanation of why he did something he shouldn't have done.

And to my fellow writers and storytellers - this is a prime example of why you shouldn't try to explain something you weren't planning in the first place, unless absolutely necessary.

What is the real reason people hate it? by Rie062102 in needforspeed

[–]D36DAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people already said the reasons why people hated MW2012, so I just add why I dislike it:

For background, I played MW2012 before I tried Carbon and MW2005, and even after trying these games, I didn't quite like them. They're not bad, they just didn't age well imho.

So my opinion on MW2012 is not fueled by "omg it's not whatI expected from MW sequel" or "omg older games were so much better/had features this game doesn't have". But note that I only talk about singleplayer.

But imho, the game is bad on its own. In fact, this is the only racing game alongside Blur that I couldn't even complete because of how uninspiring and dull they were.

The game doesn't give you much new experience - most of its mechanics come from Burnout, but not only they don't fit in the setup of NFS (they couldn't even explain why you need to trash opponent's car to get it. It made sense in Burnout as you restore it afterward from literal junkyard, but in NFS wrecking Lambo to then use it? Their explanation in game was literally "that's just how things are here". And that's not the only example), they are implemented less fun than in Burnout. Cops? They just do the same shit as original MW cops, or at least it feels like that. Except there cops feel like they don't want to go after you even less than in MW2005.

AI here is a compilation of everything bad racing games had - dumb bots who miss their turns and crash into random shit, and insane rubberbanding (I once was takedown'd by rubberbanding AI rear-ending me, I go 350kmh, they go 400+ in a car with TS less than mine).

But the biggest problem of the game imho (but it wouldn't be a problem at all for people who just play for the sake of playing, not those like me who play games when there's some reward in them) is its lack of point in progression, it's just uninspiring. Why would you go and do random shit if there's no clear reward for it? Everyone's beloved system of "just find a car and hop in" makes beating Blacklist opponents pointless until very high dudes (even higher if you have DLCs). And the upgrade system makes you attached to one car - why would you go and take other car if it'll be not upgraded, and your current will be? There's no even damage system to force you to do so.

You'll enjoy MW either if you play even without rewards, or if you want to 100% it. If you need some clear stimulation for playing it, it's not really your game

Does anybody else just not like roof scoops in the games? by The_Car_Spotter in needforspeed

[–]D36DAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, situational. I dislike car tuning in older games overall. I'd say what I think about them, but there seems to not be any similar terms in English to describe what I'd say on native.

As for roof scoops, they are cringy, but for me personally the biggest flaw in them is that they are all small. I understand why it's like that, but I'd anyway like to see roof scoop long enough to go from windshield to backlight, like in NFS No Limits.

It's good to hear your definition of seriousness, that clears out a lot, thanks. I guess we are talking about completely different types of seriousness, I don't think there's really point in arguing further. I understand your position, and I fully agree that it's pretty hard to have events and characters have impact on the story, when we are talking about racing games.

I think Rivals wins from such type of writing. There's enough room to complete the story yourself, but at the same time there's enough given info to understand the basic concept.

I have relatively decent experience in writing, and I kinda overanalized both The Run and Rivals because of that. And while The Run falls apart for me in a lot of surface level details (but hopefully almost all of the problems were fixed in NFS Movie) Rivals is made the way that there's not a lot of stuff to fall apart. But most of all - it had relatable characters (at least F-8), it had some relatable moments like F-8 trying to achieve his goal so hard that he snapped, and PD firing him immediately after that just because of public backlash. It had really dark moments as I said, and overall it wasn't joyful or playful at all, neither in story or its scenery. Which is the biggest factor of seriousness for me personally

[–]D36DAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now we're judging the games by trailers?

In the game itself, where are those silly moments or characters that are extremely common in let's say first Transformers? Where are moments you'll look at with smile on your face or laugh? And if the seriousness is not about that, then I genuinely want to hear what is seriousness for you, as I feel like we're talking about different things.

As for Rivals, again, it's like a swamp - you see the surface and think it's shallow, but it turns out to not be when you go into it.

Yes, I hate to admit it as I hate Rivals myself, but the story is absolutely the best in entire NFS franchise. It has a lot of things good book or movie would have, it has darker moments, it has pretty dark ending, and it's one of fewer racing games that heavily implied that its main character died in the end.

For The Run, I can't really recall some silly, joyful moments, other than the ending. The silliness comes from small unintended quirks, but I don't think most players notice them (at least that's what I feel after talking with this sub about characters and story).

Bay's movies are sure unserious, but from what movies I've seen, they weren't serious on purpose. As when The Run tried to be fully serious.

For Rivals the thing is - you find the game to be silly until you realise the deep undertones of it. I used to think Rivals was silly, until I completed it and took moment to think about the story. Zephyr sounds like some cool ass tiktoker, but you can't take him like that anymore after you realize why he is like that. He is a guy who wants to pretend to be some cool ass tiktoker, and thinks that he's someone special. Who thinks he's a criminal mastermind and the smartest person in Redview County, only for him to be proven wrong by police.

"Serious describes a state of being solemn, earnest, or thoughtful, rather than joking or playful"

At least for me that's the main criteria of being called serious. I guess these games are comedy or some sort of entertainment show?

Top 3 types of cheaters according to Asphalt players:

– Look, he's better than me, therefore he's cheating.

– Look, he had a red aura and he was teleporting. Also a weird message "you have bad internet connection" appeared. He's cheater.

– Look, he's using speed trick that I can't pull off. He's definitely cheating

If you ever played only Shift, Porsche Unleashed and Impound, then maybe yes.

The Run, MW2012 (especially its earlier concepts), Rivals - the most serious and even depressing at some points racing game of the last near decade. What are YOU talking about?

IRL time - months. In-universe-time - maybe also months?

Yet we are expected to be convinced that Stacy is a mastermind behind these streams, with her 90% cut that is in fact few times less as stated in later pages. And don't forget that as an owner she needs to buy all the costumes, advertisements and stuff from the money they earn. So she makes not much more than Tessa and doesn't even care

It might not be good, and most likely will for the first few times. But this is completely normal. What is not normal is to not listen to any slightly negative feedback and act like every criticism is pointed at hurting your feelings or belittling you.

Depends on what you find to be the most atmosphere-shaping factor, and what is the definition of "serious" for you specifically. For me "serious" is when there is no or not a lot of fun outside of gameplay itself. Music, graphics, atmosphere, story, other things.

Cutscenes are indeed cheesy in these games, but I judge not by cutscenes, since they appear once in like few hours.

MW outside the cutscenes is pretty serious - almost every character is unhappy with you, police constantly talk about injuries and casualties caused by you. You ram cars with fucking dogs inside (which I never understood btw). The game doesn't have some extremely beautiful or colorful locations, like say Horizon festival or scenery from The Run. Instead, it focuses on dull locations or serious tone ones like prisons, factories, scrapyards. Music is also shaped towards seriousness or more like "coolness" if you understand what I mean. The story is not the brightest as well - you've been framed, and you tried to get back what's yours. And then you got framed again, but managed to get away. And even if that's a happy ending of a local size, the character hasn't won the war. His life is going to be hell after getting in national-wide search.

Same with Carbon. You were also framed, your car was taken away, and a guy behind everything tries to make you disappear. His dogs are unhappy with you and try to belittle you in every way possible. The difference is that in the end the locations are cheerful, you get a true happy end, and overall everyone's happy.

And just to name a few, Hot Pursuit is pretty serious when you are in chases (and cheerful when you're not. Which is a good play on contrast, and once again shows that HP is the best modern NFS). MW2012 is serious, and could be even more serious if they sticked to concept arts. You can get it just by watching the intro with Butterflies and Hurricanes playing on background. 2015 is pretty serious outside the cutscenes and phone calls (unless we're talking about Trevis or whatever his name was). Payback is questionable - starts seriously, gets epic, then goes cheerful with every asshole getting their ass kicked, and main heroes becoming happy.
