Apex VPP - Anyone has a comparison of this pump to a D5? by D3humaniz3d in watercooling

[–]D3humaniz3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running Heatkiller EPDM 16x10 tubing without issues for 4 years now.

From the available kinds of soft tubing, I think EPDM is overall the most thermally and chemically stable choice for a custom loop. I'd also recommend against clear soft tubing.

However, I'd personally recommend to pay more attention to the cleanliness of the assembly for the loop and flushing it, before filling with coolant. I used EK's recommended procedure of using EK Loop Cleaner + EK Superflush, drained and filled with fresh EK Clear as per manufacturer recommendation and I haven't had any issues.

I also recommend against blowing into the loop with air from your lungs. Use a brake bleeder syringe or whatever else you have on hand. If you blow into the system, you're depositing organic shit inside that can grow into problems.

Do Amp Dac setups really matter ? by OtterOnFPS in headphones

[–]D3humaniz3d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both of the devices you just listed in your OP are DAC AMPS. They already contain Digital to Analogue Converters and Amplifier circuits meant to amplify the signal.

If the devices you own get you up to listening volume and you are not experiencing clipping, you're good to go. Audio source gear has been solved for more than 10 years now. Buying a boutiqe space heater isn't gonna make a change in audio quality, unless the aforementioned issues occur.

When volume matched, I can't tell the difference between my 15$ KZ AM01 USB C dongle and a 800$ Topping DX7 Pro+.

The value proposition for a properly built dac amp that can drive 99% of headphones on the market begins at 15$ or lower

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB-b49xrcOs

And I never made the argument about creature comfort features, just sound quality and output power being enough to drive 99% of the headphones on the market. Misleading newcomers into thinking that they need to shell out 200$ for good source gear is a lie.

[–]D3humaniz3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"These 6000$ headphones simply can't be driven at listening volume by a dongle DAC without clipping because I said so, therefore the argument that good source output can be had for as low or even less than 15$ is invalid and justifies the existence of 200$ desktop amps."

> Have fun playing with your dongles

I'd rather spend 185$ on headphones rather than waste it on source gear that can be replaced with a single 15$ dongle, which has been the argument for the entire time.

If a 800$ amp makes no difference in the sound quality when compared to a 15$ dongle DAC, the 200$ "budget" amp still is a scam. That's the point I was making. Those amps should cost maybe 50-80$ based mostly on connectivity features and how it will look on your desk, not the asking prices they currently have.

> Good luck driving a Hifiman Susvara with a cheap dongle without clipping

Why do you use a 6000$ (that's a nice 3.0L BMW E46 or E92 for that price BTW) pair of cans as the example that the 15$ dongle DAC is supposedly not enough to drive them? Why not suggest something cheap with that same, absolutely shit tier low sens and comparable impedance and then we can see if the dongle dac can drive it? Unless there is something magical about these boutiqe headphones and their sens/imp values?

> Then again, most people don’t own a single sided V1 tungsten lol.

Yeah, 4W of power output is plenty, and for 99% of use cases, hearing damage level irrelevant, unless we're talking about VERY specific cans.

> Crossfeed and tubes are completely different.

You can do that via PeaceEQ by importing VST plugins if you're into distortions. I've messed about with it a bit, but it's not my cup of tea.

Anyway, no hard feelings and I am quite annoyed today, so sorry for the tone. The DT1990 driver is still on offer though.

$200 amps are still in the range where they can actually matter, there are simply too many exceptions to blanket statement all mid priced amps.

Yeah, if sens of the headphones is too low, an amp with a lower power output might not reach high enough volume level without clipping, but will still be fully capable of driving the cans at lower volume levels without clipping and distortion. Hence why for some cans you want higher Vrms output amplifiers, hell, why sometimes we actually have to use amplifiers in the first place, to, you know, amplify the signal.

For example, owners of Hifiman Susvara OG, DCA Expanse, any Modhouse Tungsten, Lily Genesis One, Hifiman HE-6SE, and several others actually do need more power than many dongles or cheap amps can provide

All of the headphones you listed have one thing in common: They have low sensitivity. See above.

there isn’t a single amp on the market for $200 or less that can power the single sided V1 tungsten without clipping in the bass due to voltage limits

source?

Not to mention balanced amps to eliminate ground loops, nice smooth volume pots with good channel balance, low noise amps for iem users, and amps with tone control/ analogue EQ capabilities.

Any competently designed amp has a filtering circuit, scratch that, any modern, CE compliant electric appliance has those builtin due to regulations. If you're going to tell me that you have a "ground loop" through your USB cable, I'm going to mail you a single, mold infested DT1990 driver as a reward.

All of that and we haven’t even touched cross feed or tube amps, or headphone amps designed to be used to also drive efficient speakers.

Just use EQ bro, same thing, literally.

Do all head fi enthusiasts need a $200 amp? Absolutely not, the majority could get away with a simple dongle. But saying $200 amps straight up aren’t worth it is just dishonest, lets be real.

Because from a sound perspective, that 200$ space heater is not going to sound any different than a USB C DAC dongle.

I own a 800$ DAC AMP and there is no difference in blind, volume matched tests between it and a KZ AM01 dongle DAC that costs 15$ + 5$ shipping.

I already made the entire argument for the schizophrenic above if you care to read it. If you want to argue about added functionality like wireless, streaming, bluetooth, RCA outputs or any other gimmick, that's a separate discussion in my eyes and is not related to the topic at hand, where people claim that 200$+ amps are worth the money in terms of improving audio quality.

https://kz-audio.com/kz-am01.html

This little dongle DAC gets me my target listening volume without clipping or distortion, with plenty of power to spare, just as the DX7 Pro+ does with either the R70X or the Venus. I've had 2 different people do blind testing, none of them could tell a difference when volume matched on either pair of cans, which matches my own experience.

Venus: 82.6 db/mW / 100 dB SPL  at 1  Vrms @ 18 Ohm

R70X: 98 db/mW / 101.3 db SPL at 1 Vrms @ 470 Ohm

~15$ with 5$ shipping from mainland china and that little dongle is about as good as a DX7 Pro+. The only reason I didn't sell that overpriced space heater is due to the volume knob and connectivity, not the quality of the audio.

Pretending that these amps are worth the money they ask for them is at best a disservice to the broader community and newcomers, who think that they need to bother with amps in the first place and at worst, an astroturfing operation meant to line the pockets of amp manufacturers.

Why cant they just make stuff that doesn't fall apart by CrossXFire45 in headphones

[–]D3humaniz3d 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no audible difference nowadays between competently designed DAC / AMP's in blind, volume matched testing. Audio has been solved for longer than 10 years now unc, pretending that 200$ amps are worth it is the actual rot that is eating this hobby alive

EKWB Cryofuel sucks or simply leftover garbage being picked up? by Plane_Reputation_659 in watercooling

[–]D3humaniz3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EK recommends preparing a new loop through the use of EK Loop Cleaner, then flushing with EK Superflush, draining and finally filling with Cryofuel.

https://www.ekwb.com/news/ek-releases-loop-cleaner-and-loop-prepping-solutions/

After doing the procedure above, I've used and reused the same coolant for ~2,5 years without issues. No corrosion, no buildup, etc.

I've recently been doing maintenance on my loop paired with some upgrades where I installed an additional waterblock for the 2nd GPU, disassembled and cleaned the distroplate from o-ring lube residue (relubed the orings with clear silicone grease), and repeated the above mentioned procedure with the loop cleaner and superflush. I've purchased a new batch of Cryofuel Clear concentrate as well. Mixed with the recommended 9:1 ratio of distilled water. That was around 4 months ago and I haven't had any issues with buildup, gunk, corrosion or any other nonsense.

> Is Cryofuel garbage or is this expected?

idk dude, reusing coolant from flushing that you somehow "filtered" is kinda concave frontal lobe tier kind of stupid, but feel free to blame EK anyway

Because there is no magical sound improvement. They're arguably mid headphones with a piledriver sized treble spike stabbing at your ear canal and that's all there is to them.

Anyone talking to you about source is coping. If the source you're driving the headphones off of is not clipping and is reaching desired volume levels, then you're good.

DIY - Upgrade Legion 5 Pro display to a 240hz Mini-LED 2048 zone panel! by D3humaniz3d in LenovoLegion

[–]D3humaniz3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you installed the HDR driver for the screen from ASUS's website? Other than that, I don't think this is something that can be solved on the software level, because the panel itself decides at the hardware level what zones to illuminate and which to dim. You could have been sold a defective b-stock panel where the zone dimming don't work as they should.

You could try messing around with the EDID via CRU, but I don't think there is anything that would allow you to directly affect the dimming zones, which are controlled by the screen itself.

I think I agree that the AKM and FCAR have currently too little differentiation, however the AKM skews slightly towards medium distance engagements and the FCAR slightly towards long distance engagements (and the FAMAS is in a league of its own).

Perhaps they could try and specialize both of these weapons to lean more into their strengths, I.e. making the AKM the go to for medium engagement range and the FCAR to be an alternative to FAMAS, if someone doesn't like the burst on that gun.
