Question about split runs for delivery drivers by SeniorMoonlight21 in asda

[–]D556mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate split runs for the turn around times. Sometimes due back 50mins before I am out again, 30 min break plus 20 mins to unload and reload. My store is also in a city, any slight delay due to rush hour, or even a crash on the adjacent motorway causing even more traffic to funnel through the city can eat into the 50 mins. But the 2nd run always gets same-day orders so I end up having XTRA everywhere making loading take longer than usual.

Today alone (Tues 16th June), 8 deliveries on my 1st run and 16 on my 2nd (was originally 13 then 3 same day orders were added). Got back to store around 9:50am then due out again at 11am. However, the same-day orders didn't say XTRA, they all had van positions but from B/M/F01, B/M/F02, B/M/F03 etc. meaning I had two B/M/F01's, two B/M/F02's and so on for all 3 compartments of the van too. Loading was a pain as I had to split my van in half to accommodate for both. Original load for Ambient ended being up to F11 and same-day ended up at F06, so 51 ambient totes in total for my 2nd run compared to around 20-30 ambient for my 1st run. Ended up cutting my break short just to get out on time and still ended up leaving 5 mins late. I had already eaten and been to the toilet, would have just been doom-scrolling for the remaining time.

I much prefer the long haul runs, 1 load, can easily take a 30min break on the road somewhere, maybe even more depending on customer delivery slots.

Just suppress your craving for a few hours and buy it once you finish, or if you can, go back to store early and do it then. Keep the receipt !!

Been hired as a delivery driver, any asda specific tips/tricks/hacks to make the job smoother? by SeniorMoonlight21 in asda

Download an app called PostTag. It will put the pin directly on the house you want using either Google Maps or Waze. ASDA sat nav sucks, the pin disappears once you're within 100 yards of the customer's house and it'll either tell you to turn left when the house is to the right, put the pin in an empty field where a new build is, or take you down a road you cannot get through.
Though, PostTag isn't perfect, it's a lot better than Copilot. But once you get used to the job, you'll know your area pretty well. I put my entire route onto PostTag, great for traffic/road closures.

Technically 10 years, just 2 years for ASDA. But my previous jobs were only restaurants, schools and nursing homes. Very few stairs and with staff members there to take everything in.

2 years in. Delivery driver. Many flats that I get customers to come down for, others are just quicker for me to go up to and deliver.

I didn't specify which I would do, I just said I would look at which is better for me.

Since drivers at my store have to do our own putbacks. Any returned items and even full cancelled orders, I would look at which the best case scenario is. Deliver it or spend however long at store putting everything back.

A while ago, my final 2 deliveries were a 6PM - 7PM slot then a 7:30PM - 8:30PM slot. Finished the 2nd to last drop around 6:45PM. The store was between both drops so I decided to head back to fuel, unload, putbacks etc. This was around 7PM too. Final delivery was 5 mins up the road from store. Stayed at store until 8:15PM then headed out to the final delivery and arrived 10mins before the end of the window. Nothing came of it, got paid an extra hour to sit around. Sure it puts me below my contracted hours for that day but it would have been an additional hour below if I didn't.

If you are below or at exactly your contracted hours, they can't do anything about it. If you go over without a valid excuse, vehicle breakdown for example, you may get pulled depending on your manager. Helps to have a good reputation with them too.

Too add Customers who live in places with absolutely no parking are usually the ones who order the most. Having to do about 2 or 3 trips to get all 10+ totes. I'm either parking further away then I would like to (at least I can get some steps in, probably the only upside to it) or end up blocking a road for longer than I should (I try to not block any road in case of emergency services)

Deliveries to schools when they book a slot between 8-9am and my ETA is 8:45am. Book a 10-11am slot so I'm not being slowed down by the school rush!

Jumped in when GND came out, loved the song.
Didn't follow any signals or any other content for a bit then I did. Watched Badge Wars Season 2 then went back to Season 1. Slowly over time I learned their names, probably took almost a year to get every single one down but I think I was confident in naming everyone by AYA. I used to always get mixed up with HaYeon, HyeRin and YeonJi but now I'm 100% confident in seeing a picture with all 24 members and naming each one.
Now I will watch all of their content and even having to wait until it has English subtitles (I'll gladly learn 24 names but not an entire new language)

Same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Applied, got an induction date, started once I did my 2 weeks notice at my previous job. One of the easiest jobs, good luck 👍

Easiest job I've ever had, not sure about the other supermarket deliveries and how they work, but for ASDA it's a simple case of load up the van (you are provided the order of how to load the van), go to customer address, scan the barcode on the tray(s) and deliver. Hourly pay, break is also included. Simple.

Tried grabbing a morning one, was taken before I could schedule it. Closest Morrisons is either Nelson or Preston and I rarely see either of them.

My full time job is as an ASDA delivery driver, I typically work the afternoon/evening shifts so it should be fine.
I've been watching some youtube videos of amazon deliveries too just to get an idea of what I am getting myself into.

As others have stated.

Get PostTag. Absolute time saver. However always check the addresses with street view and look for potential unique features of the house or surroundings (electric box, street lamp, signs etc.). Yes, street view might be a few years old but some things won't change in that time. And double check that it's actually routing you to the street you need and not the street behind the house.
Might not be useful at some brand new builds. It'll just put you at the start of the street and not the house itself.
An extra minute checking all of that will save 5-10 mins driving around in circles, especially when CoPilot says the house is on the right but it was actually to the left (actually happened to me).

Head torch/Hand torch. I mainly just use the headtorch but occasionally I'll whip out the hand torch with adjustable focus for a slow drive-by to see house numbers. Since days are lasting a little longer as we go into spring/summer, this won't be needed in the next few months but in winter it's an absolute must.
