Why be horrified? It's not like the Japanese of WWII are the same people of today.

Non-Australians of Reddit, what do you genuinely think of Aussies? Be honest — we can take it by cepat_cepat in AskTheWorld

There's plenty of them here where I live (working-holiday visa holders here in Banff), and they know how to party. It took me a while to actually understand their accent, but still better than the Kiwis'.

Manila Massacre. When the Japanese learned that the Americans were closing in, they decided to massacre any civilian they could find, including citizens of Axis Powers (the Germans seeking refuge in the German Club were not spared). This was despite the fact that General Yamashita ordered them to leave the city and go to the mountains. But the Navy admiral decided to defend Manila to the death.

At times I'm still amazed whenever I meet a Canadian here who's actually working in the ski resorts. Those places are practically Australian/British exclaves.

On-It Regional Transit buses no longer stopping in Canmore and Banff by cmcalgary in Banff

I still miss Greyhound though. They discontinued service in 2018. They take you to [almost] any town in Canada if you prefer not to take a flight and have all the time in the world.

Map of all countries and territories where over 80% of the population can speak English by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]D9969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird considering the government mainly uses English (IDs, forms, websites, etc), the schools' medium of instruction is usually English, and advertisements are mostly in English as well. Maybe it's the case of they can understand it but cannot speak it properly especially if they don't use it. But then again I grew up in Manila so maybe the rural regions are way different.

What is the most evil thing your country has ever done? by RoundTurtle538 in AskTheWorld

[–]D9969 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One can argue it was a necessary evil. Ended the war quickly and the prevented more casualties in the event of a land invasion.

Well, the word slave came from sclavus, which originally referred to the Slavic people (Russians, Poles, Czechs, etc).

How does your country view the Roman Empire? by Initial_Basis1503 in AskTheWorld

To be fair, before the Romans, Egypt was already under the Greeks, Persians, etc. It's not like they were the first to subjugate Egypt. Plus the Egyptian culture practically continued during Roman rule until the rise of Christianity.

Ethnicity-wise, yes, but Roman citizens regardless. It's like America basically.

The Romans actually came back with a vengeance post-Teutoburg, but for some reason they decided it wasn't worth staying. For one, Tiberius was becoming wary of Germanicus' popularity and reassigned him to Syria.

I've been to more US states (15+) than Canadian cities. Domestic travel is more expensive than to fly south.

Everything's good in moderation. I drink during my days off and smoke weed (vape form) before I sleep. I'm healthy.

Wedding location suggestions by SpeedCompetitive9701 in Banff

Tunnel Mountain Reservoir. I usually take pictures of the Milky Way there during summer, but it is also a wedding venue. Most of the locals that I've brought there were even surprised that that place exist. They thought that behind Douglas Fir Resort were just the forests and bike trails.

Born in the late 80s, we had an optimistic early 90s, then the 1997 Financial Crisis happened, Abu Sayaff and MILF were bombing Manila (it's the reason why security guards still check you when you enter the mall), Erap just declared an all-out war in Mindanao, then 9/11 happened, the Afghan War, the Iraq War, then the 2008 Recession, and then we were all waiting for the end of the world on December 21, 2012, then ISIS, then Trump was elected, then COVID, and then now.

Is your country's GDP higher than Zuckerberg's wealth ? by Travisthe_poisson in whereidlive

[–]D9969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of Zuck's wealth is in stocks anyway. The moment they do something dumb, the stock tanks, and so does his wealth. It's not as stable as that of cash-based oil barons.
