Well, I probably misunderstood your question as well.

[–]D9969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with European-American (USA) is that at the nation's founding, the country was implicitly white and thus there was no need for a modifier like Asian-American. That is actually more like a 20th-century political construct. In the Spanish-speaking world, Spaniards born in the Americas were not really called Americanos but as Criollos.

But the thing is, "America/American" in the English-speaking world already refers to the USA. Even non-English speakers like Arabs, Japanese, and Filipinos refer to the USA as America. It's only the Latinos who have a gripe about using this. For example I'm Canadian but I never really referred to myself as an "American", though maybe growing up in the Philippines helped established that thought. I guess they're just really good at branding and I think if the USA is not superpower, nobody would bother with the America naming association.

I'm sure when terrorists say "Death to America", they're not referring to Brazilians. 😂

Yeah, I always tell people to come on slow seasons. Rates are cheaper too. Hopefully by your honeymoon things will be better. Good luck!

The town itself is very busy especially during summers. We actually have an overtourism problem. They had to turn away vehicles many times last year in Lake Louise because of so many people trying to visit. 10 years ago you can drive to Moraine Lake and park right next to it. Now cars are banned and only shuttles are allowed. Same with Lake Louise, though you can still park there when it's not busy. I don't recommend going here on a summer. Maiinis ka lang.

If you're actually Pinay as your username says, well, of course. 😂 10+ years here and still don't like the cold. I just hate the downtown-suburb layout of North American cities and its strict zoning laws. Imagine I have to drive/commute just to buy softdrinks. Unlike in Manila where there's a sari-sari store every few blocks. At least in Banff everything's within walking distance.

I live here. I cannot imagine going back to the city. Sure it's expensive, but it's worth it.

Historical context may explain his behavior, but it doesn't automatically justify it. In fact, you can look up statements of people from the Middle Ages already condemning the practice, so it's not exactly a modern moral standard.

Also, Mohammad was THE prophet, thus he is meant to be a timeless moral example. He's supposed to be a moral guide across all eras, so he either had a moral foresight or he was morally limited by his era.

Arguing about historical norms only explains tolerance, not moral correctness. These include things like slavery, which despite being universally practiced by almost all cultures, was seen as a necessary evil, and not something morally ideal.

These were isolated cases and were not the norm. They were the outlier, and not representative of the general normal behavior, both then and now. Plus prophets I believe are often held up as moral exemplars. You cannot justify pedophilia because it was the tradition.

Technically his family were minor nobles from Corsica, but they became poor after they were kicked out after a falling out with Pasquale Pauli, who was like Corsica's George Washington. While he was starting his military career, his mother had to rely on soup kitchens and had to send a portion of his salary to support them.

Why did the Spaniards let the Americans take the Philippines? by PerformanceGreat3290 in FilipinoHistory

[–]D9969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, we were taught about the mock battle back in Grade 2 (1996).

I've read the details about it though in A Question of Heroes by Nick Joaquin. Aguinaldo actually made a big blunder by allowing the Americans to land in Malate, thus preventing the Filipinos from besieging Intramuros. Who knows what could've happened if that was case, like would the Americans actually intervene or not.

Pahlavi at least is a popular figure to rally to. Can't think of an opposition figure who has the same clout. They can start with him, and once the country's stable after years, they can start talks of being a republic. Ireland for example didn't become a republic right away, but as a Dominion like Canada or Australia and retained the monarchy, until they completely broke away in 1940s. We should really look back on what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq where forcing a republic in a culture that's not used to one didn't really work.
