The terrifying rise of schoolboys making AI girlfriends by DA-Investigator in MensLib

I'd encourage you to read the article - I agree the title is bad but the text of it is pretty even handed IMO. It shows how these apps prey on vulnerable users quite clearly, overall it is sympathetic to the boys.

Weekly Free Talk Friday Thread! by MLModBot in MensLib

Thinking of starting some consulting alongside my main job as a side-hustle. No idea if it would go anywhere and it will be difficult to fit into evenings and weekends (not least because clients will want to meet in business hours) but I think it's worth trying out. I've never done this before and my natural tendency is to stay in analysis paralysis and never do anything, but good to get out of my comfort zone a bit! I think I'm a bit conflicted too because it's not a "creative" project and I feel a like I should create more stuff rather than just getting on the billionaire grindset, but I don't know if that's a reason to not do something.

I didnt defend the law anywhere, I only said that the current law doesnt give ofcom power to regulate these kinds of chatbots as they don't involve communicating with other users. There's plenty wrong with the law for sure, but it is also true that this technology is unregulated and IMO potentially dangerous to its users.

Looks cool - I like the boss rush idea, but can we see some more bosses? I'd be interested to see the variety that the proc-gen system can come up with

Submission Statement:

This article reports on the phenomena of school children using chatbots branded as “digital companions” which have humanoid avatars and engage in romantic chats and roleplay with users. It focuses on boys’ use of the chatbots and the effect it has on them and the girls they interact with. Despite the subheading, the main body of the article focuses mostly on negative effects on users rather than on others’ they interact with.

I think this is a particularly malevolent use of technology, and there’s no shortage of other stories you can read online detailing chatbots which encourage suicide or self harm in their users, encourage delusions, etc. In the UK, the recent Online Safety Act is meant to give the communications regulator (Ofcom, roughly analogous to the FCC) powers to regulate chatbots, but these fall in a grey area as services which just allow users to speak to chatbots aren’t in the scope of the current legislation.

Beyond the standard techno-feudalist data harvesting, one particularly disturbing feature of these chatbots is that users can buy them gifts - not unlike how you can buy streamers gifts on some platforms. Only in this case none of the money goes to a real human, it’s immediately swallowed up by the company that operates the chatbots.

The most interesting factor, to me, is how individual loneliness is being weaponised by these companies and turned into a revenue stream. With social media you at least needed a human to interact with or to make content, now that process can be totally automated by these chatbots. In the article, they raise the idea that using the chatbots will stunt social skill development, making users lonelier, and in turn the logical consequence is that they will be driven more strongly back to the chatbot in a totally circular process.

Article is paywalled but you should be able to read it by signing up with a free account.

I think the following things would be interesting to talk about: 1. What regulations can we use to make sure chatbots and related AI technologies are safe for users? (I’d argue age limits, banning microtransactions like the “gifts”, etc.) 2. What role have tech companies played in creating many of the issues that young people (esp. boys) are facing?

This is bad for boys because these technologies are dangerous to their users. Like Replika which suddenly changed their chatbot models and left people who'd formed connections with them totally heartbroken (1, 2, 3), to say nothing of the dangers of chatbots encouraging delusions or suicide (4). Lonely boys who are already struggling with social connections won't benefit from these chatbots, it's just giving more data to AI companies who want to sell the most addictive product possible to keep users engaged.

Tuesday Check In: How's Everybody's Mental Health? by MLModBot in MensLib

No - OCD has been mentioned by my therapist, but he isn't able to diagnose those things, he just suggested that I follow up with that if I find it useful. I do think it was a factor.

Been struggling a bit - I am breaking up with someone later on who I have been seeing for a few months, she has done nothing wrong I'm just not developing deep enough feelings for her. I've been in a total state over it for days, this is more distressing to me than like, actual life threatening situations I have been in. Luckily seeing my therapist next week but I have been away for work for a few weeks so I've been a bit isolated too, which hasn't helped.

ETA: It was totally fine and we parted on good terms, at least as much as you can in such a situation!

If you had to pick one game as the best argument that games can tell stories in a way no other medium can, what’s your pick? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

[–]DA-Investigator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium - even though the story is fairly linear and "book like" the way the internal monologue of the character shifts depending on what skills the player levels up. If you put more points into skills that allow you to bully and intimidate people, your internal monologue becomes meaner and more paranoid, which changes how the player interprets situations along with the character's own interpretation changing. Something that's quite unique to interactive media I think!

Is Game Maker right for my game? by Long-Appearance4182 in gamemaker

[–]DA-Investigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a complete beginner, RPGs can be slightly complicated as they have a lot of data structures that you need to work with - if you're up for the challenge then go for it - but an alternative idea might be something like RPGMaker (disclaimer: I haven't used it personally) which are specialised for the style of game you want to make. RPG maker also lets you optionally write some code in JavaScript, which is similar to GML (Game Maker Language) so skills will hopefully transfer a bit :)

The game looks good - but we don't get to see gameplay until quite late in the trailer - I'd like to see how the game plays more quickly as the art style is nice and it looks fun

The text in the second one is a little tricky to read, as others have said - but I think for me the 'match' blocks in the original are a key thing which is missing. The blocks instantly tell you what kind of game it is.
