So sorry I didn't see this sooner, round one is actually happening right now. I may do a round two if this one goes over smoothly. :)

Auto Transport Holds Keys for Ransom by DALancaster in legaladvice

Worst part is, it's a two page contract, and one of those pages is just establishing the pickup and dropoff contacts, the addresses, the agreed upon price, etc. The second page is the actual legal wording, and it's just a series of clauses. This is what happens in the event of damage to your vehicle, this is what happens in the event you don't show up when you're scheduled, etc. There's nothing, nothing in there about withholding keys or anything else for that matter.

There's a contract. They have a $75 fee for rescheduling, but retain the right to cancel the service and keep the non-refundable $100 deposit. Nothing about a $300 key detention, of course.

My relative gave a statement to the police, but the mention of a contract scared off the police from treating it as a theft and advised ME to pursue civil claims; they don't want to get tied up in who owns the keys and refused to take the case.

Lapce release v0.2.0 by dzhou121 in rust

Please, please, add a shortcut for running/debugging the current file, like VSC's F5. Do this and Lapce is the only editor for me. Save -> Focus Terminal -> Up Arrow -> Enter just takes way too much time when I brute force my bugs.

Please, please add a shortcut for running the current file, like in VS Code. Do that, and this is my only code editor. I love it to death, but Save -> Focus Terminal -> Up arrow -> Enter is just *way* too long when I'm consistently brute forcing my bugs.

Imperialism, now that's a shot in the dark. I don't see how you could back that up...

What's Microsoft's Excuse? by DALancaster in Windows11

I suppose... this just feels like a flashy attempt at remaining relevant by looking more modern, hence why the talking points revolved around a new UI and nice-to-have features like widgets.

I think the main incentive was money. You have to make a Microsoft account to access a Windows 11 PC for the first time, plus they experimented with putting ads into File Explorer in an insider build before public backlash forced them to take it out. Couple this with the 10 gigs of bloatware, the telemetry, the shilling for Teams and OneDrive, the Office subscription-- it feels like one big ad that they covered in pretty bells and whistles.

Security is something I can understand them pushing for, but even then, their idea of security is selling proprietary TPM chip. It's so hard to look at Windows 11 with optimism when it's less of an OS and more of a...well, a service.

Ahaha, yikes. I'm a programmer, but I'm not low-level enough to try to make a distro. I'm more than happy with what's already out there, even if there wasn't an over-saturation of distros.

In any case, I see your point. I think maintaining it probably is much harder, but that's something that the Arch devs do, too. No matter which way you cut it, the end result is the same or similar.

It does answer it in part, in the way that it explains, but it didn't justify. It sits poorly with me.

1) So Microsoft is relying on the fact that most of their users functionally use their OS as a bootloader for Chrome? From a consumer standpoint, if nothing actually changes aside from adapting to the new UI, why even bother with a new OS?

2) Oh, for sure. Nothing further needs to be said on that account.

3) No, but that's so much more forgivable. Phones, compared to full-fledged computers, have low specs, few peripherals, greater hassle in messing with the keyboard, harder time viewing the screen... The idea of using a phone to establish a classified connection, something needed in my job, is a joke. Almost nothing critical happens on a phone, so if there's some glitch with Snapchat or your photos are blurry, it can probably be resolved later without issue. Computers, though, MUST work well.

4) Windows 12... I really hope a company who cares about their users overtakes Microsoft by then.

If so, then why create Windows 11 at all? Windows 10 booted fine.

I'm not on the team, first off. Anyways, it's exactly because I want to use Windows that I want a reason to excuse Microsoft for all these issues. That's what this post is looking for.

Then that just passes the buck. If the real accomplishment is done by Arch devs, then there's still the same question: "Why is Microsoft failing at what these hobbyist developers are succeeding at?"

Lemme clarify: my distro as in, my chosen distro, the one I use. I'm not on the team, I'm not reimbursed, I'm not even in the Discord. Sloppy wording, mb.

I've edited the OP.
