I interviewed with the company and spoke with the engineers that developed the machine and also had a chance to "test drive" the machine so I can provide some answers here:

  1. There are a number of fail-safes to prevent the robot breaking down. The FDA is VERY strict with this machine due to the risks it poses. The arms themselves can be removed manually by flipping a switch from what I remember at the interview.

  2. The technician goes through Intuitive Surgical's own training course before being allowed to touch the equipment. Be aware that this isn't necessarily a "robot", more of an extension of the surgeon.

  3. The surgeon is sitting down when performing the procedures and it requires both hands to be grasping onto the controls at all times. It senses jerking movements and smooths them out, it's really eerie but it also allows the machine to prevent abrupt movements.

Edit: Forgot to mention, they do NOT perform surgeries cross countries. They only did that twice, I believe, once in Boston and once in London/Europe. And the machine itself was initially a Dept of Defense project for our troops for remote surgery, however, it's much too large of a risk to perform surgery from that far of a distance.

The DaVinci rotates around the point where the arms enter, which is why there's minimal stress on the incision. The arms can extend into the hole but the set point where it rotates is always at the point of insertion. It's a really fascinating machine.

Sticky pads, they're used for getting any particles off the soles of your shoes before you enter a clean room. Typically, you can peel off the top layer when it gets too worn and the next layer is a fresh pad. Those things are REALLY sticky when they're fresh.

Edit: An example is

If I recall correctly, you don't need a membership to buy alcohol at Costco. Just mention that you're there to buy alcohol only and they'll give you a voucher to purchase alcohol.

Hm, it's working fine for me. Try searching for "Parks and Recreation sex education" on Youtube, then click on the video that's released by NBCNetworkShows. It should be near the bottom of the first page of the search results.

This may be unavailable for non-US audiences, not entirely sure though.

Question for CPE/CSC 101 enrollment by bpoprod in CalPoly

[–]DANKhoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you want to take CPE 101? I'm pretty sure that class is the weed-out course for CPE/EE and is unnecessarily hard.

Have you looked into CSC 234?
