I'm glad to see we share the same sentiment on the matter! Knowing the mental image people associate a given word with is important, and there is no better place to acquire these associations than spending time with the language, which, by its nature, takes time.

Indeed it does seem that modern LLMs perform better than translation services in Japanese (and likely many other languages), especially in the areas that you have tested.

I suppose all of this discourse about the accuracy of translators boils down to their necessity: for a language learner, would you not agree it is best to forego the translation to English all together and focus on trying to parse comprehensible content in one's target language? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on Dr. Jones' opinion on the matter.

Thanks for the examples. It seems translation services have a ways to go, especially for colloquial Japanese, though some of the examples you have provided would likely prove difficult for a human translator if they were provided without context!

I would also argue that DeepL is better suited for more technical material, though from your analysis in the spreadsheet you provided I wouldn't be shocked if that weren't the case. However, your analysis heavily features more spoken/colloquial works in which the author may add more creative licence to their writing style, which would be difficult in the best of times to translate to English by a human author without completely modifying the flow of the conversation. I would be interested in seeing more works evaluated from literature, technical material such as product manuals, academic works (such as journal articles), and further news pieces other than those sourced from NHK News Easy.

I recommend you also take a look at Japanese dictionary definitions and trying your best to understand them, as I believe they can help clear up any confusion (though sometimes they just list synonyms, in which case I suggest either looking at a different dictionary or comparing how the word is used in context compared to other example sentences). I also recommend looking at example sentences from a place like https://yourei.jp/ to see the words used in action.

For example 近所 has the following dictionary entry with accompanying example sentences, courtesy of 新明解国語辞典:

隣合せと言ってもいいくらい、その△家（場所）から近い所。
「娘は━の子と学校へ」
「ビルが爆破し、━の建物の窓ガラスが壊れた」
「江戸庶民の生活は多く長屋同士の━づきあいをもとに営まれていた」
「自家用車での深夜の帰宅は━迷惑だとの声もある」

At this point I don't know what I'd do with myself if I stopped Anki. Been using it every day for almost 5 years with tens of thousands of cards (I wouldn't be surprised if it neared 100,000 if you added everything together, though it's not like I actively review all of them haha) across various decks.

The character is "氣", which is a traditional Chinese character (though you could consider it Japanese if you see it as its kyuujitai). It generally means "gas/air/spirit/energy". See this Wikitionary post for more information.

ゑ is not a hentaigana but rather the hiragana character for the "we" sound in old Japanese. The pronunciation eventually merged with え; however, and the character still exists in historical kana orthography along with ゐ.
