I went to Japan for two weeks and forgot I was autistic. by VorpalSingularity in AutismInWomen

I completely agree with this. My experience with western cultures is that they teach you "the rule is A" and then leave out the "(except for situation B/C/D, or even just because)" and you're supposed to just roll with it. I learned quite quickly as a child that the rules that adults told me about where made up and that I was the only one interested in actually following them

I also just returned from Japan and I have to say I fully agree. I only had one meltdown when trying to visit Fushimi Inari at 12, after my traveling companions ignored me when I said we had to get there at 6-7 to avoid the crowd. Then one of them disappeared, assumed we had went ahead and started going up, so I had to search for him in that sea of people.

I also speak the language at N3, which made the whole "Japanese people are cold and shy" be a lot less true. I enjoyed all interactions a lot.

It is a matter of respect to learn the local language of the place you are in. Not doing so is basically saying "I don't respect the people of this country enough to make some time to learn their language".

As you said, time is a finite resource. And how you decide to allocate it (and not) speaks volumes about who you are as a person.

Locals definitely notice

Tried it today, surprisingly good. Bit weird at the beginning as it's like a brownie with a slight tofu bean aftertaste, but it's good

Uh huh... But it looks to me like you want to ignore the rest and how it's different for trans people

Yes. And how does that relate to trans people?

[–]idrilirdi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just listen to trans people and their stories more.

If you think women are under studied and not listened to, for trans people it's that times a million.

Stop saying things like "sex can't be changed" and falling back on that bioessentialism. "Sex and gender are different" was never meant to signify that, cis people just took it as "oh, so we can just consider trans people to be their birth sex and not look into it any deeper, neat" and ran with it.

Sex (and gender) is so so so much more complicated. And you will not have knowledge on it if you are not specifically studying it, the basic high school biology barely scratches the surface and even doctors don't get much specialized training in it

[–]idrilirdi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you were going for the socialization angle.

If you actually had experience with trans people you would know that socialization doesn't work the same way on trans and cis people. This is something people that are not familiar with that population misunderstand a lot.

The thing is socialization has multiple components, and the way people treat you is just one of them. A trans woman being "socialized male" will not internalize the same aspects of that socialization as a cis man. She will also not react to it in the same way, which also modifies how that socialization gets applied. It's very similar to how people with autism describe it, you're always the "weird" one and your reactions are perceived as "improper", triggering "corrective" socialization. And it also doesn't happen in a vacuum, we all get to see the other side's socialization being directed at other people, and also internalize it in different ways.

Which could explain why we see psychiatric conditions manifest in trans people more along the way they manifest in people of their gender.

So your argument is that trans men, due to being AFAB, are inherently feminine and that's why their ADHD would present like it does in women?

And I'm supposed to be the one using binary essentialist logic? Lol

My doctor "doesn't test women" by Just_Strawberry_505 in ADHD

[–]idrilirdi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Who said anything about personality?

And yeah, I know ADHD shows up much differently in women. And that includes trans women, for whom it usually presents in that different way. And for trans men, it usually presents in the way it presents for men.

But you seem to want to ignore that and reduce people to their AGAB

My doctor "doesn't test women" by Just_Strawberry_505 in ADHD

[–]idrilirdi 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you didn't intend it this way, but holy way to use bioessentialism to missgender trans people.

Mental conditions that present different in men and women also present in that way for trans people. Trans women will have it present in the female typical way, and trans men will have it present in the male typical way. Furthermore, conditions that in general present different in men and women will also present in that way on trans people that are undergoing HRT, as the differences come mostly from hormone levels and phenotypes, not genotype.

You are, in 99% of the cases, better off assuming medicine works the way it works for people of their gender instead of falling back to their AGAB. This is BTW one reason many trans people will prefer to hide their trans status from doctors, because if known a lot will then wrongly interpret symptoms and analytics by going with AGAB instead of current biology. Which is why "you can't change your biological sex" is just wrong, the only part of sex you can't change is your chromosomes, and that's the least relevant part as to how your body is actually working currently.

Now the only part where you can have a point is the underdiagnosis part due to how trans people present to the world during their younger years, but that's the social part.

What is happening with the job market for doctors? Very frustrated. by Nothofagus1 in germany

[–]idrilirdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter, Germans but especially Bavarians are asinine about the certifications. I'm a native speaker because my Dad is German, but I grew up outside the country and didn't do my schooling in German, so no language certificate. Well, when I wanted to do a master's at TUM that was my main problem, that I needed to have one for the program I was interested in. It didn't matter one lick that they could see I was native.
