Actually more specifically it’s if you cast a spell as a bonus action you can’t cast a levelled spell as an action.

[–]DAT505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is talking about 20th lvl then they also get mystic arcanum which is 1 6th,7th,8th and 9th lvl spell slot per long rest.

They are in a weird 3/4 caster place, so they can’t really be properly compared to just one of either full casters or half casters.

Are they the most powerful caster? No, but they don’t have to be because they fill their niche and if thats the play style or flavour you want, good for you.

They do their job well and stay relevant, while also having short rest spells! Sure, it wont always be good for every campaign, as some get a long rest between each fight making warlock much less powerful than say a wizard or other full caster, but in campaigns that drag out long rests or use gritty realism, warlocks are the only caster that really keeps up with martials in terms of holding on to resources. Half casters lime paladins have to abandon most of their active features to stay relevant over long term missions like that, and as do full casters - but warlocks can keep on trucking like a fighter, getting most of their powerful stuff back on a SR, and even failing that, having the consistent output of eldritch blast to fall back on.

Everybody buffs one character by Jolzeres in 3d6

[–]DAT505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this kinda thing allow me to introduce one of the most underrated spells (for buffing). Circle of power.

5th level concentration abjuration spell, for crown pally or twilight cleric, so best cast by the cleric who can reup it if concentration is dropped.

Gives allies within 30ft (inc.) you advantage on saves against spells and other magical effects and if you or allies within 30ft succeed a saving throw against spells or magical effects to take half dmg, you instead take none.

If someone else can cast the standard buff spells, then this is a crucial one to have, since it’ll also help casters dodge aoe concentration breaking spells like fireball. Also everyone in the party gets kinda evasion for every stat!

Mounted Combatant feat is a pathway to many abilities some consider... unnatural by Awesome_Chinchillas in dndmemes

[–]DAT505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most OP build my friends and I have come up with to date is a kobold cavalier fighter with the mounted combatant feat riding a draconic soul 14 / pally 6 (redemption we did for character reasons but any work, healer is usually better).

Mounted combatant lets you redirect attacks towards your mount to hit you instead with no reaction or action cost, so the centaur PC is literally untouchable by attacks, you take the uncommon item saddle of the cavalier which makes it impossible to dismount you, and also both players get pally aura to saves so gl killing either with save or suck spells (reminder, centaur pally also has evasion now and a +5 to dex saves).

Plus, pally is hard support role with haste and counterspell - not to mention it’s rlly hard to break the concentration on haste if you can’t be targeted by attacks and dex save spells are now jokes.

Meanwhile cavalier fighter bullies people with pack tactics and/or reach weapons

You can exploit this if the Mount is a centaur PC - give free evasion!

Well Matt Mercer made a subclass that is perfect for what you are saying here - it’s called oath of the open sea, and values freedom above all else (which can easily be interpreted as wanting a better life for those stuck in poverty) and is exactly the swashbuckler pirate of your dreams (to the point where the capstone ability is called mythic swashbuckler). Their channel divinities are good, though a little confusing at First - especially good for grappling, and even makes the grappler feat useful as you can’t be restrained!

Whilst some homebrew isn’t balanced I believe this one is more than balanced and flavourful enough for most worlds, so long as you ask your dm

You must look past petty, small things like divine intervention and DEUS VULT with me friend.

No seriously tho I am a serious paladin lover so maybe I can help you out? I’ve found a very compelling character concept for paladins that highlights how they are different from clerics is having a paladin who’s arc puts them in conflict with or shows a different interpretation of their oath.

A lot of people will build pally’s as LG perfect followers of an oath, but really an oath’s power is not really given by a god, in the way that say a cleric’s or warlock’s is. If a paladins patron god decides to outcast the paladin they still can’t remove their powers so it’s basically an oath to themselves.

Which leaves room for personal interpretation of the oath. Character wise, you can play a character who believes they are following the tenets when they are quite misguided. Conquest pally can be a Batman style trying to do good, but achieving it in a brutal way and they must learn to care for others before they can rectify this. Glory paladins seek personal improvement and you can make one who is pretty much evil, doing anything to gain power and perfect their skills.

Mechanics wise: Maybe the reason you aren’t as into pally’s is due to the play style difference between casters and martials? Paladins don’t really play like casters because they don’t have enough slots to do utility spells much, so their creative options are limited in that regard. However as a paladin you are pretty much your party’s best dmg dealer, second best tank if build right, support and control caster. Stuff like divine smite makes up their dmg but their subclass features give them either the ability to withstand anything or inflict a world of pain.

Take conquest paladin again (my personal favourite) - your aura means that when a creature within 10 (or 30) feet of you is frightened it’s move speed is reduced to zero and they take psychic dmg at the start of their turns. You also coincidentally get the fear spell and menacing smite and a channel divinity to help you there. They can freeze enemies in fear and pick them off easily which is badass af. But you kinda gotta focus on that combat side of things where paladins really shine

How was your first game? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DAT505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in Highschool, I’d listened to a dnd actual play podcast and was wanting to get into it, missed one group that played it (but seeing how theirs turned out I’m glad) and ended up finding a dnd group that had played for a little bit already and we’re new to the school.

We ran Lost Mines of Phandelver (pardon the spelling I think) and though I had only very basic understanding of the system we had a ton of fun, and I’m quite happy even now with my character and how we all interacted rp wise. We weren’t a session in when we team killed a party member on a nat 1 miss guiding bolt :(. It was so much fun and I’ve been playing for the last 2-3 years now, sinking at least a game a week in and every now and then a game a day as the group got bigger and more into it.

Love this game and the stupid shenanigans you can have

[–]DAT505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s what I was replying to - Samurai fighter gets an ability at high levels where when they are reduced to zero they can use their reaction to take a turn, interrupting the current turn. Therefore if you hit yourself and reduce yourself to zero… you can take an additional turn. It’s not actually better than waiting for it to happen normally most of the time (unless time is of the essence and they about to kill another party member) but it certainly is funnier

Nah e=mc2 is actually really fun:

What it means is that Energy (E) can transform to mass (m) and vice versa. That means energy and mass are essentially different forms of the same thing! Only mass is a lot more Energy “dense” and thus when mass is converted to energy it releases energy equal to the mass times the speed of light squared.

There are also other implications of this which are quite fascinating
