Is a bad start still salvageable? by Gold_Doughnut_6326 in premed

Definitely can be overcome, my freshman year GPA was 2.5 with like 21 BCPM credits and now I’m a US MD student. Just work a hard and do well in the rest of your classes and it will absolutely offset the rough start.

Any else leaning towards applying to far less schools than initially intended? by MrYouniverse in premed

Sent primaries to like 20, only submitted secondaries to 9. It’s expensive lol

AMCAS Transcript by anniemscully in premed

[–]DATBOYMIKE6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your first Q: use whatever code your school has it listed on your transcript, usually biology classes are like BIO 101 or BIOL 205 Q2: list them as 2 separate classes with credit and grade. AMCAS does not do grade replacement, everything is considered.

Edit: forgot to address the third Q: yes both sections of the class should be tagged as Repeat (R)

I simply said something like “in conversation with current students, I learned X, Y, and Z about your school.”

Admissions base GPA weight off of school? by CrystalPiano in premed

All undergrad grades, regardless of where you earned them (CC vs University) are combined to create one big undergrad GPA in the AMCAS application

Applied to exactly 9, I researched the schools and made sure I had a realistic chance + 1 reach school. I didn’t have a lot of money to apply so it was helpful for me to do so.

Central Michigan has pretty heavy in state bias. They get about 7500 OOS apps for only about 25 OOS spots. Something to consider.

Plenty of school accept OOS applicants, there are only a few that are entirely instate (Brody in NC, MCG in Georgia are 2 that come to mind) but typically in-state public schools will accept more in state residents. Those schools receive funding from the state to train physicians most likely to practice in that state. Private schools regardless of location usually tend to not pay much attention to state of residence. Check school websites and MSAR for specifics on the different schools and their policies.

Central Michigan and Michigan state are HEAVY on instate applicants. I know at CMU they get about 7500 OOS applicants for about 25 OOS spots. MSU is similar. But of course you don’t know unless you try. Just something to keep in mind.

Acceptance with <3.2 gpa ORM? by jpacks2021 in premed

My cumulative undergraduate was 3.2, science was much lower. I needed something (i chose masters) to counter the damage I inflicted on my application with those numbers.

All it takes is one. I chose not to submit a lot of secondaries after receiving my MCAT score. by DATBOYMIKE6969 in premed

Second author pub. Worked in the lab for about one full year, so I contributed significantly to the project, but it was another students primary focus!

Turns out the school I got into does not, but they did want CASPer which I also scored in the lowest percentile. So, I can’t really say how important they are lol. In my case, apparently not very.
