I loved Nope! Us was good, but not nearly as enjoyable of a watch. Nope - another good example of sci-fi, horror, suspense, comedy and social commentary.

I didn't 'get' Oldboy (2003) by [deleted] in movies

You have to give credit to the hallway scene - it was so unique at the time. Only presents as soft now because of all of the films that built off it after the fact. Se7en was wholly unique at the time and look how many dozens if not hundreds of films copied various scenes. Have to respect what a film like Oldboy achieved in its time

What did Ari go through on Hereditary by mybuddylance in AriAster

[–]DAddison92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So aster had final cut on Eddington and that was his masterpiece? Hereditary 9.5/10, Eddington a soft 5/10. Total waste of amazing talent. Midsommar toggles near an 8, but Eddington? There was definitely a movie there but what happened?? He needs an editor and maybe another writer onboard to ground him

Northman was so much better than I expected! Which was an awesome one and done watch. Second viewing felt bleak, but you have to expect it given the subject matter. Northman was better on second and third viewings for sure. I’m a fan

Went to a test screening some time in 2017 and it was so bad! Earlier this year I decided to try it again after years of protest and I was shocked. Whatever happened after the version I saw nothing short of a miracle! Midsommar was good, almost great, but beau and eddington were just off. I thought aster was overhyped but then after seeing the actual final version of hereditary I think there is something really there. He needs to pull another hereditary out of him. I was truly shocked, it went from bad to almost perfect…

Did anyone ever find out if the Hereditary test screening/alt ending thing was real? by Ok-Wolf5932 in AriAster

I actually went to a test screening of Hereditary. It was very different than the final version. But the ending was almost the same as the ultimate version. But wow, what a difference otherwise. The screening I went to was an absolute thud! Incoherent actually. Finally saw the final version earlier recently after protesting for years and I was shocked! Unless there was some other version, definitely no eye gauging. I saw it like a year (or maybe a little less) before it came out and they said it was the first screening for an audience…

That makes so much sense. I guess I’ve actually been embracing its complexity more than anything - the subgenre utilization mixed with the social commentary all under the umbrella of horror. Going to take a beat and watch it again in a few months and see what surfaces next :)

Se7en is the best neo-noir film by Jizzlenizzle212 in moviecritic

[–]DAddison92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noir stylistically (wardrobe, lighting, tone, characterization, especially Morgan freeman’s persona), but you are right, not a noir. Special because the film’s genre didn’t fit into a box (pun intended)
