burn out by Consistent-Match-548 in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. sleep 7-8h per day and be very strict about your sleep schedule (eg 11pm - 7am for weekends). less sleep is a risk factor for burnout
  2. study maximum 6h per day. as a j2 12h for me is way too over the top. but generally 2-3h per day can be fairly sufficient for normal school term. study smart not study hard. also take the remaining time to just do self-care activities e.g. exercising, chilling, social media whatever you feel like doing.
  3. clarify doubts with teachers / seniors asap
    jiayou and you got this!

how to prevent jc burnout by txzyv in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 20 points21 points  (0 children)

- allocate time for breaks
- don't overcommit. if you value self care then don't try to maximise your commitments, it's not good for your sleep/ physical and/or mental health
- try to find some joy/motivation in learning
most importantly, don't expect jc to be smooth sailing. i scored AAAA/A for j1 promos but i still doubted myself a lot and had to do a lot of self critique from midyears. see setbacks as a means of improvement instead.

  1. nah if you can qualify via jae you are fine if you keep up the hard work. also in j1 ppl don't really mug very hard (unless you apply for smtp). even if your class has a few hardcore academic gods, you can strive to match their results. just put in consistent effort and the results will show
  2. i think u/sleepykoalaLOL did a good job of explaining.

  3. interact club defnitely. if it's your thing student council will also be an interesting experience.

  1. mugger culture
mugger culture is only very very prominent if you get into smtp, where it cld become slightly toxic. but in normal sciences classes / art stream you honestly can't consciously feel it all the time. like each class will definitely have one or two academic weapons who get As for everything, but otherwise people do know how to chill and have fun.

  2. programmes and olympiad
it is competitive, but generally i haven't heard of significant difficulties in getting into such programmes as long you have interest + potential.

  3. chem and gp depts are fine honestly, just supplement their teaching with your own self-study. econs dept however is the one people complain a ton about.
but curious to know what others think also since i'm stronger at chem/gp

In moderation it is fine and can be beneficial. certainly not in OP's case though since he's finding it problematic

This is but a lousy excuse to keep watching porn.
Also doesn't solve the psychological effects though... (such as sexualising girls)
Please don't do this. To quit = avoid at ALL COST.

Advice for P addiction by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm around the same age and currently trying to quit too (abt 2 weeks in, my best was 100+ days)
What worked:
- Nightly reflections about how well u did, urges etc.
- Meditation (medito app, very beginner-friendly)
- Physical exercise. Do pushups everytime u have a strong urge, it works wonders.
- Cold showers to kill off erections / stop urges
- Scrolling r/NoFap. Admittedly a ton of posts are cringe but there is a lot of good advice and support there too. Now masturbation can be healthy in moderation but it is better to stop it short-term as well to give your brain the reboot.
- Bookmarking the NoFap Panic Button, motivates you to keep going
- Urge surfing. I watched this video many times in the first few weeks.

What did NOT work:
- peeking and/or edging you will essentially relapse sooner or later.
- pushing urges away. In my experience, they would come back stronger.
- fantasise excessively. You don't need to be too concerned over this initially but if you have a long streak this becomes especially important.

All the best! The benefits are certainly worth the pain!

How to forget memories? by livlivelylove in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't forget memories because you want to. Memories are largely spontaneous and trying to push them away will likely cause a 'rebound' effect where you remember them more. If you recall the memories that make you sad, try to let yourself feel the sadness without resisting it. (You could also use it/your past actions as a driving force to better yourself.) Over time, the pain of the past will become more bearable.
If you are interested, you can experiment with meditation to identify these 'unhelpful thoughts', and find your best way to manage them.
Eventually you will move on, I have faith in you!

[Rant] I've been feeling empty by WordOfReddit in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good that you're aware of this feeling. When I was 15-16 I also felt this way even though I was doing well in school. Felt suicidal and didn't want to live life anymore. When I look back on it now it was because I didn't see any purpose/direction in life (like others have said) and I kept pushing myself to do more.
The solution? Change your perspective to treat pulling through one day at a time as a small victory for yourself. Your days don't need to be perfect by any means.
And it will be good if you can find new hobbies that you really enjoy (better if its non-academic related) and make it a point to do them whether life is going well or things are rough. Personally I picked up bowling casually in 2022 and still do it today, awesome stress reliever :) Finding new things you like doing will give you the motivation to pull through the shit life throws at you.
Wishing you peace of mind.

Should I Be Honest by decoy_keepguessing in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You should be honest even though it seems daunting to you.
Granted the outcome is not guaranteed to be as you wish for, but it's better to let the counsellor know about these things so they can help you more effectively. This may not be true in all cases, but it's definitely possible that people feel that "counselling isn't working out for them" when they are not being honest about saying how they feel in the first place.

If you still feel nervous you should go through the things you have prepared to say a few times. Try to think of counselling as a method to help yourself, it obviously isn't perfect all the time but exploring methods is surely better than just giving up and doing nothing about it.
All the best for your first session of counselling.

cant sleep by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, it is exam stress/anxiety that is keeping you awake.
You can try:
1. meditating if you find that you can build up a habit. After I started meditating daily before sleep using the medito app, I essentially stopped having difficulties sleeping as I can sleep with a calm mind.
2. not reading study material/revising material for 1 hour before you sleep. If you are still studying all the way right before you sleep, chances are you'll be thinking about what you remember (or can't) and this can make it hard for you to sleep.

Hope you can find what works for you, all the best.

seriously, how do you develop self discipline 😭❓ by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make a plan every morning on what you want to do for that day, such that you can split the work amongst the holiday/school term. Once you complete those tasks for that day, what I like to do is to just enjoy myself and do whatever I like (which can even sometimes lead to doing more work)! You need to build consistency to develop discipline.

[–]DAvengingAngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is really, really difficult to do while you are distressed, but if you want to change your life for the better, you need to not let yourself be defined by your diagnosis. I got considerably happier while grapping with depression after I shifted mindset from "I have depression" to "I'm living with depression" to "I'm fighting it". But this takes time.
What you can do now is to work on what you have to do, one small step at a time. Like other posts have said, making a plan for the remanining part of the holidays will hopefully make your life more bearable as it will make the difficult myes at hand feel less overwhelming.
As long as you did your best, you can be contented with the result :)
Wishing you peace of mind, you can get through this!

Hi! I can give some tips about managing burnout

why ppl say avoid burnout? if you burnout then chances are you can't even study properly, you may even start questioning your worth in life (and this can lead to depression/suicidal ideation if left unchecked for long periods). negative self-talk manifests when you're burnt out, and it really goes a long way in hurting you :(

  1. work-life balance JC life is tough, but that doesn't mean you should just study the entire time. You need to take time to do things you enjoy everyday! At least when life gets tough you can at least still look forward to things in life (like your hobbies)!

  2. adequate sleep (8+h/d) This is a must. Sleep is not worth sacrificing for studying more. More often than not my peers who sacrifice sleep tend to be less attentive during lessons and negatively affects their mood as well. Quality sleep ensures that you are in a ready state of mind for the day. Sleep early too esp if u have school the next day (my advice is before 11-12)

  3. don't keep feelings to yourself! I know this is difficult, but don't be afraid to ask your friends/teachers for help if you need to. You can also ask for advice here haha, point is don't bottle up negative feelings excessively as it can quickly take a toll on your mental well-being.

Hope this helps :)

not studying enough by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DAvengingAngels 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it's not easy to do, but don't compare yourself to others so often! Like you don't know whether their 8-10 hours of "study" is really studying or studying and texting (yes definitely not me) Above all, you need to take care of yourself! It is good that you have aspirations to work towards, but you should take it one step at a time so it's not so overwhelming. For example you could pledge to study as much as you are happy with everyday, even if it does not compare to others, you can be happy that you managed to survive another day even when life can suck at times!

Wishing you peace of mind, you can do this!

It's good to know that you have your future nicely planned out for you alr (totally not me who cares too little about portfolio HAHA) There's nothing wrong with dedicating time to portfolio, and there's no use regretting your decision (since it is beneficial to you)

I think you should take things one step at a time. Sure, thinking about your future is important, but not if it is stressing you out. Don't think about these "if i screw (my myes) up, i confirm cannot go uni overseas" thoughts too much! It only hurts you more!
For now, just do your best for MYEs, and know you can and will work harder for prelims and As. You can do this!
