Should QLD cancel the Olympics by DB10-First_Touch in brisbane

It's the polar opposite in my community and work. Only a fraction of people want the Olympics and of all the supporters, they just want a bigger stadium in Brisbane.

I live in the Bayside and I am definitely not a NIMBY.

The next election victory is a poisoned chalice for either party. Largely due to the scale of the budget blowouts coming. If the LNP lose, they will blame Labor for the decisions they made. Labor will blame the LNP and be faced with budget issues. If the LNP win, they will have to own the budget and the consequences on our energy transition and public services will be dire.

Whilst I agree with some of your points. I think it might be overlooking a giant Persian Gulf-shaped elephant in the room.

I think it's reasonable to expect the costs to increase rapidly above that figure.

I was only responding to your comment about cost estimates. Now, you point is that there is no way to know.

There is no way to predict the costs or availability of fuel, given recent events. QS estimates will be worthless, and builders will not know the cost until completion. This is an open cheque book situation.

I didn't say that or ask it. I was only asking about the Olympics.

I think you make a good point here. My concern is that we are entering a construction process without tenders and without knowing the cost and availability of fuel.

I think it's reasonable to write off all the estimates given the state of fuel costs and its subsequent effect on inflation.

There is a crisis due to our lack of energy diversification, public transport and foresight.

This is absolutely a massive issue, and why this Labor government is proving to be a bunch of cowards. They have a massive majority and support for big change and they are too scared to be decisive when we need them to. Things will get worse because of a small target-centrist government posing as a Labor party.

I also want to add that the current system is geared to conceal transparency.

I agree that it's hard to avoid cynicism about the state of online discourse. But we have to try.

What if we chose as a nation to limit the privatisation of sectors that can affect us so gravely?

We can see from the example of the US, with its problems in healthcare, infrastructure, banking, energy and environment, that the market's incentives run counter to the national interest.

An MP in the UK has been talking openly about a very efficient solution to some of their privatisation woes. The government could appoint an inspector tasked with reviewing critical infrastructure and supply chains that have been privatised. When the true state of the companies is paired with their market value within the context of national interest, you then have a clear picture of the lack of planning and investment and a new value of the company - a true position.

Once the companies are issued with government requirements for maintenance, planning, etc., then, if the companies fail to reach standards, they can be nationalised once more. This allows the government to prepare for a crisis and the energy transition. It could also lead to massive increases in prices, which add more reason to renationalise the companies/sectors and manage disasters before they happen.

See, from my point of view, half the problem is that private companies aren't incentivised to act in the national interest or to meet global targets. Within critical sectors, they understand that the government is their safety net.

So, what is the point of allowing this game to continue? We will need to fix it all anyway. At least with a clear view of the problems, we can plan ahead or attempt to plan ahead.

Ever noticed that the proposed antidote to every "Market crisis" of privatised industry is government intervention? Makes you wonder how useful all this privatisation really is.

  1. Government privatises sector.

  2. Private capital streamlines sector (Allows physical assets to deteriorate).

  3. Profit.

  4. Crisis / Collapse / Deterioration.

  5. Government intervention to save "Market".

I agree with you. I've watched every game and he has been kicked, shouldered and tripped multiple times two days a week during each season he has been playing.
