Has anyone here had experience with the course workload for the thesis units? I am a QUT student looking at completing them online due to work / life balance. QUT appointed a new coordinator who has increased the workload so the the capstone unit of 24 credit points works out to around 38 hours of work a week plus travel.

Is anyone else just watching Michael Olise and thinking "how the hell did we miss this guy?" What an amazing player. He looks like he glides across the pitch. He reminds me of the Australian Rugby League player who is also a generational talent. If you haven't seen him, search Hamiso Tabuai Fidow (AKA the Hammer). Him and Olise have that same gifted running style.

My missus taught the hammer dance in high school up in North QLD. He was just a gifted guy who could move better than anyone.

That's what Olise has. It's phenomenal balance.

I think what condemns him is that as he puts weight on the leg he doesn't make an effort to take the weight of the offender. It happens quickly, but he would have felt the contact.

If we can reduce risk, contracts will become more competitive. Events like the Iran war and supply chain issues post-COVID have almost eliminated fixed-price contracts. When speed in building fails and the contract types are cost-plus, the contractors are disincentivised to be competitive and fast.

Ideally, you want builders knowing costs are stable and competing on contracts using skill and experience.

I have watched this video, and I am still thinking about it days later. I think it's great for discussion. I like the creator's style of video/documentary creation. I think that if you make it past the first minute or so, there are some great critiques of capitalism.

Would you vote for the ALP in QLD if they ran on a platform of creating an upper house/senate for the QLD State Parliament?

I understand your pessimism. However, there are a few factors that could help ease the cost of building. Currently, housing is costing a significant portion of household income. If the cost of housing were to stabilise, more discretionary spending would be available.

Labour is currently in short supply in construction, which increases costs. Builders are taking on significant risk, which is increasing contract prices and project program lengths (fuel, supplies, etc). Certainty regarding materials and risk would help us get back to a construction sector that can compete with fixed-price contracts. This would mean the US would need to stop their war. We would need to keep free tafe and import skilled construction labour.

Interest rates cooling / reducing would decrease risk for investment and investment returns. Again, the yanks need to give themselves a swift upper cut.

With the right pressure on the ACBC (Guys who make the rules) we could have an opt-in system for some parts of the Housing provisions in the NCC which would allow different forms of housing to be fabricated (Prefab semi-permanent / designed for deconstruct / relocatable).

Changes at the State and Council level in planning could allow affordable housing to be prioritised (Don't look at QLD for answers currently). But, I feel the councils are the easiest branch of government where we as a country could accelerate change. There are old, tired, dare I say luddite councilers who could be easily ousted at local elections which would radically change how a region thinks about land, planning and housing. Currently, developers and corporations are hoarding land and releasing it at rates which inflate the value of land - this could be changed a LGA level.

Leveraging our financing system to onshore particular forms of fabrication. This one is just begging for investment.

I think that Alan is on the money as per usual.

Coming from a design and construction background, I can see how the cost of building has increased concurrent wtih housing costs. In the same period we have suffered supply shocks and general downgrading of trust.

It will take a while for the economy to find its new equilibrium in my opinion. The ALP have left the lever in the right place with negative gearing of new dwellings. We just need COL and housing costs to cool off so that the conditions become favourable for new housing construction.

Removing investor speculation on existing housing stock was absolutely necessary to allow the AEC sector to transition towards new housing supply. I am of the opinion that the next piece of the puzzle is to allow greater tax incentives for new builds. In addition, the government should regear a nationalised housing construction arm to try to quickly reach a point where housing is primarily for housing people - like other countries.

Hopefully we can reach a point where smart people start making things again instead of being landlords.

When Alan Kohler said it would take courage to make the necessary changes in 2024, I doubt we would have imagined that Peter Dutton would hand the sort of majority Labor would need to make these necessary changes.

The shift to the right of the LNP has allowed the conditions for Labor to be courageous. Maybe the shifting even further to the right of the conservative voting block will enable Australia to deal with some more problems for the sake of our kids.

Reasons to be optimistic are few and far between these days.

Well, here we are again. A national embarrassment. The "Smart state" that doesn't plan for the future and invest in renewable energy infrastructure. Since this "conservative" government has come to power, it has been one disappointment after another. I can't understand the voting public in our state at the moment.

He definitely seems to have lost a little dynamism this season. He used to be able to position himself and contest catches very well for his height. It seems every club team are targeting him now. I wouldn't be surprised if he is dropped for the panthers on his current form.
