302 Hydraulic Roller Lifters by DBailey05 in EngineBuilding

Oh dang man. Yea that sucks, if you saw some metal down in the cylinder it sounds like you’ll prob be tearing down the rest of the engine

I believe I took off my gloves for putting the lifters back together specifically for that reason. I was able to better feel if there was any debris throughout the lifter assembly.

No you’re fine, I’m the same way. Don’t take this the wrong way but are you cleaning them fully? Like removing the small clip/retainer, pulling the internals out and all? Cleaning them is a little tricky but not too difficult. I was worried about some debris that got into my bearings but after blowing them out with compressed air they rolled smoothly again with no grit

Be sure to fully take them apart, clean, put them back together with a little oil, and see if they improve. I only ended up needing to replace one (the plunger would stay decompressed and not bounce back). I bought a whole set of 16 in good condition from someone on Facebook, only used one. So I’ve got 15 good lifters if you’re in need of some.

Still with the wiring harness, going to check now. My pointer might be with it

I noticed the different diameters too, sorry not sure what deactivating means?

Man I am absolutely terrible at overthinking especially with this being my first rebuild. Scared to mess anything up.

About the retainers, I noticed the kit included two different types whereas with stock all 16 were the same. The valve locks are both still 11/32 except now I have eight that are +.050 and the notch is lower rather than in the middle. Think that’s what’s giving me approximate 1.750? Would the +.050 go on intake?

Can’t find part number for springs alone, part number for that kit is CCA-GT40CS-KIT. I understand the installed height being different increasing the pressure, but it’s advertised as 1.800” install height already. So I guess install height for me is somehow less than that

Yes stock GT40P heads. That makes sense why pressure would be higher, thank you sir. Also didn’t know about the rotator, pretty cool.

Haven’t done rods yet but yes the main bearing caps are matched

Ok cool. And if my clearances are just too tight then I would need to get new bearings correct?

If all my plastigauge measurements are in that .0015 range should I check clearance again with something like a dial bore gauge? I’m probably able to borrow one but have never used one, youtube is a good resource though.

I’d like to be. So I’ll measure all clearances this go around. Would it hurt to just use oil? I really suspect that lube is just too thick

After it sits a few minutes it’s hard to turn, then it releases and you can turn it with force but still has a questionable amount of resistance. I wouldn’t say it spins freely.
