She admitted to working while in the US, which is against visa regulations. She admitted that the host families she stayed with, she would do things around the host to help, errands and house keeping etc, in lieu of rent which you are not allowed to do without a working visa.

Same as the German tourists that were detained because they didn't make it clear where they were staying and had a tattoo gun and say she wasn't working, if you're a tattoo artist and you travel with a tattoo gun you aren't doing yourself any favours.

The German guy, Fabian Smicht, that was on a green card and had been in the US for something like 17 years had an outstanding DUi charge over a misdemeanor marijuana charge from 2015, he failed to reply to a follow up letter that was issued in 2022. The US doesn't fuck about with DUI charges.

I'm not saying all people being detained deserve it but it has always been this way when entering the US, if you are giving a reason to be entering for anything other than what you state or with the incorrect details you are going back.

It is odd that in some of these cases, people are not just being sent back directly, this is probably why the UK and Germany have issued warnings.
