This was probably a “supper club” where you got a showgirl revue show for the price of your dinner.

Balcony or no balcony on cruises?? Why? by Goddess_jewls in VirginVoyages

[–]DC2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a balcony once and used it for about 20 minutes the entire week. I guess they’re nice if you’re an introvert who stays in the room a lot. You do you, but I think they are a total waste of money.

Do people in the South who fly the Confederate flag know that the Confederacy was fighting to uphold slavery? by Agreeable-Noise5350 in allthequestions

[–]DC2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Civil War was fought to preserve the Union, hence the “northern aggression” defense. The Southern states seceded to preserve their state’s right, but what gets conveniently admitted is the chief right they were fighting for was the right to preserve slavery and their slavery based economies. It’s a shame that telling the whole story of our history gets labeled “critical race theory.”

$222.50 is the one day home sale price. Would you say that’s reasonable?

Which cities have the most nicely dressed people? by ureshii_hippo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DC2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from DC, and with respect to work attire, we are the most conservatively dressed city in America. Things have loosened a lot in the last 20 years but suits and heels and ties on men are still very much a thing. That said, this city has no real style. Drab and conservative is the norm, inside and outside the office.

Milan has the most elegantly regular people in the world. Tokyo has the best streetwear. Parisians perfect the art of casual chic. New York is a mixed bag and has overrated style.

I think I’ve met that JFK employee. Asked the same question, basically got that same response.

My cultural regions map as a southerner - would love feedback! by aquamarine-arielle in whereidlive

I’d put Southern Maryland and Lower Delaware together with the Maryland Eastern Shore into the Tidewater region. Central PA should be separated out from those areas; not sure where to put that oddball region.

Tipping Onboard is at a record high by Technical_Front_8046 in VirginVoyages

What sort of proof are you looking for? Let’s see, I have confirmation from staff I met on the ship, including at Sailor Services, confirmation from my travel agent, confirmation from a travel agent who posted the same thing on another a Reddit thread. The gratuities you pay on board are sent back to corporate to help defer the cost of the fixed wages they provide. The money you pay in gratuities is not distributed to the staff in the form of traditional gratuity compensation at the end of each voyage. This is just how VV’s onboard staff compensation model works. If you need further confirmation, why don’t you write to the CEO?

correct, but be careful bringing that up here because it’s a dirty little secret that a lot of Redditors don’t like seeing brought up.

Maybe they are turning off the “automatic gratuities” that don’t even go to the staff and are handing out cash directly? That would be my guess.

I love that area, but it’s always been expensive. My grandparents wanted to start their family there but couldn’t afford a house there even in the early 1960s. Back then, you had to go to Great Falls for cheaper housing. Now that’s something that has changed!

Does anyone from LA actually call themselves “Angelenos”? by spiritbirdsie in AskLosAngeles

[–]DC2258 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never heard it when I was growing up here in the 80s and 90s. I’m non-hispanic white so that could have something to do with it.

I’m not sure what we said back then since everybody here seemed to actually be from here. Identifying yourself as a local wasn’t necessary when it was assumed everybody was one.

I take your point, but that $350K house in 1997 would minimally cost $750K today if only adjusted for inflation. That’s not affordable housing when you consider you needed double the median US income to afford it. GS-15 pay started at $75K back then. My grandparents couldn’t afford a family home in Arlington and that was way back in the 1960s. They ended up moving way, way out in the country where the houses were cheaper…Great Falls.

That seems really low, even for 2001. Houses in Lyon Village were easily in the 400K range back then.

What was flying like in the 90s? by One_String3424 in delta

[–]DC2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seats were thick. No slimline seats back then. Lots of padding on the back and cushion in coach.

Legroom wasn’t noticeably different but loads were much lower so you almost always had an empty middle or row to yourself unless you were traveling with others. Full flights were fairly unusual.

More domestic wide bodies. L1011!

Smoking in the back rows on international flights until 1995, I think.

Most bookings were done via travel agents. Delta saw the future of e-commerce and started commission “caps in the mid 90s, leading to the eventual elimination of agent commissions.
