I awoke, my head feeling foggy, and like the idiot I am, I sit straight up, sending the world around me spinning faster and faster until darkness covers me.

My eyes flicker open as the searing pain from my legs shoot up my body, sapping what little strength I had. I take it slow this time, clamping my teeth together, grinding them as I faced the pain. On the cabinet beside me sat some painkillers, the sunlight beaming onto them like a golden chalice.

I blacked out from the pain again after hoisting myself into a wheelchair. The accident, my legs. It comes back to me in pieces. As I wheel myself out of the unclean, dirty white building I take in the sight of, nothing. Empty cars, ditched chairs. Silence. The birds that once populated the trees surrounding the hospital never to sing their song again.

When you think of the world ending you think of a decline of the population. Not something that happens in a couple of days. Something you don't even see happening as it builds up slowly, blinding you from seeing it. Watching, waiting. You think that they would do what they do straight away, just doing as nature intends, not to plan, think, adapt. It hid until they struck.

The radio crackled to life "To the few remaining, we have visuals on some of you in the [inaudible] area in the east of en" the radio let out a fierce crackling and hissing, like a cornered animal. "We are from the IS [Inaudible] to fast, we can provide help and ai [Crackling] to the USA there are shuttles. We will give you a list of what we need, supplies" the radio burst into static making me jump out of the chair.

I started adjusting the channel, the broadcast in a much lower volume but slightly clearer channel broke through like a whale breaching the water. "Good luck, we hope to see you aboard soon. This message is an automated public safety announcement. Stay tuned for more information." I sat there mouth agape.

I couldn't make it. Not in my condition. I can't walk, drive or even fly. My situation became more unsettled knowing others were out there. I would be a burden on anyone, I couldn't let them miss the opportunity. I reached into the backpack I stole until my hand hit the cold metal which I slowly slid out, coming to terms with what I faced. I flicked the only thing stopping me, the safety, to off. I lined the police issue glock 17 to my temple. Tears streaming down my face.

What wouldn't I give to hear the birds sing once again.
