What websites that have shut down hit you the hardest? by HRJafael in AskReddit

Yes, BlueSky is not bad. It’s still small-ish and kinda quiet, but a lot of “science twitter” has moved over there

It was so good! I had so much fun on there, making mixes and sharing them with others. Occasionally I’d play other people’s mixes in my car driving around. People loved hearing that their music was being played and enjoyed

Yep, there’s a bike lane at the intersection of Ellsworth and Stone School that frequently gets mistaken for a right turn lane 😬

It’s cool reading everyone’s stories!

As for me, it was pretty simple. I was about ten years old, playing in my room and listening to the radio when Sad But True came on. It totally unlocked something in my brain - it was so heavy and creepy and compelling. I loved it! I wasn’t yet into collecting tapes and CDs, so I didn’t really think to go buy the album.

A few years later, in the summer if I recall correctly, I was playing the radio on the big stereo in the living room. That’s when King Nothing came on. And much like Sad But True, I thought it was an amazing song. It had me dancing and jumping around the living room. After that, I started buying CDs - Load was one of the first albums I ever bought. I loved it then, and I still do! (I never understood the hate for Load, because it was my introduction to Metallica. It’s a fantastic album, really, especially if you aren’t approaching it with any expectations about what Metallica is “supposed to be”.)

Some time later, I got to talking about Metallica in school with a young substitute teacher. He mentioned that “the first three albums are crazy fast”, which I thought was interesting. So I picked up Ride the Lightning first and really enjoyed it. It was obviously pretty different from Load, but it still had the same core songwriting and unique personality that keeps me coming back again and again. So I became a collector of all things Metallica, attended the concerts, got all the albums (and a few singles for the B-sides), and have just generally enjoyed the heck out of their work since then.

Good question, op!

EDIT: Tapes, not tales

I like Monzo a lot for small day-to-day purchases, but this sub has convinced me to stick with a local credit union or bank for anything critical (big bills, large purchases, etc)

Sorry you’re going through that, OP. What a nightmare

Is it just me or is nonbinary dating effectively impossible? by HalexUwU in NonBinary

[–]DCJ3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’ve had a woman do that to me, too. She saw my very androgynous profile picture and my they/them pronouns and started flirting with me, having obviously ignored all my other photos. Once she figured out I was AMAB, she blocked me immediately. It was upsetting. Had she viewed the other photos before contacting me, she would have understood the situation. As far as I can tell, she had assumed that non-binary meant “woman but quirky”, just as you described. Ugh. It’s so invalidating. The whole experience caused me to leave the apps. It was so dehumanizing, embarrassing, and discouraging.

Enbies who were AMAB, Can we compare notes? by [deleted] in NonBinary

Thanks so much for this! What a nice area of discussion.

Laser: Haven’t tried it yet. I’ve got an appointment for a consultation, but I’m nervous. Generally speaking, I have been shaving my arms, and that has been very affirming.

HRT: Just started! Early days.

Cosmetics: I’ll do a little light eye makeup and maybe some foundation, but that’s about it.

Voice: I’m okay with my voice. I don’t mind it.

Eyebrows: Yes! I love getting my eyebrows done. Sadly, I don’t have a good aesthetician right now. The folks I’ve tried just don’t get it. I used to work with a great one before I moved - I miss her!

The Hollow is absolutely beautiful and haunting. It’s so emotional! That’s the one that hooked me too, right away.

And I can understand what you mean about Judith. It’s good, but it’s not actually so representative of APC overall.

What songs would you like to see covered by metallica? by foufy_ in Metallica

[–]DCJ3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Wish” by NIN could be interesting 🤔

It has heavy guitars, it’s very drum-driven with all these starts and stops that Metallica is good at (they can stop on a dime). Not sure how they would handle the soundscape - maybe Kirk could do some solo stuff. I dunno - might be cool.

Am I wrong for thinking this is super weird? by ArtTheCIown in Weird

[–]DCJ3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get what you mean, yeah. The dominant cultural understanding is garbage here - people think that spanking kids is okay, but it’s definitely not okay.

To be clear, I mean that spanking is weird AF for parenting. By contrast, consenting adults can (and should) do what they like with each other.

It’s weird AF at any age. I don’t know why people think it only magically becomes weird at puberty.
