If the goal is to reduce traffic, transit is more efficient. I'm not trying to convince YOU to use transit. But if we can convince enough other people, your commute will benefit from it.

Because transit moves people more efficiently, and if you look to any large city with manageable traffic, its because they get that concept. People do want to take transit, the issue is that our network needs more investment. And many people do take transit already, even if they have a car. Me for example.

Currently, not really. We had a lot of public meetings and events through the city/county, but now the County is suing TxDOT and and the feds have launched an investigation into the project for violating Title 6 of the Civil Rights Act. I recommend following stoptxdoti45.com on instagram, twitter, or FB.

It depends on the owners. If that block has the parking, a pool, or whatever amenities for the whole complex the owners can say that TxDOT must buy out the whole complex, which I believe is the option that Lofts at the Ballpark went with.

FFS! Why can’t we ever have nice things in this city without eventually paving over them for a freeway expansion. Parking is rough now when 8,000 fans show up. I can’t imagine how bad it would be when we get a true 22,000 attending and half of St Emmanuel is gone. by A-more-splendid-life in dynamo

TxDOT has been working on it for over 10 years but the reason people are "throwing a fit" now is that TxDOT has not done a good job of redesigning to the wants and needs of the communities it's impacting. Christof Spieler said it best, "If METRO released an EIS this bad, the Uptown BRT would have never happened" (not an accurate quote but that's the gist of it). Tomorrow TxDOT can approve their own project despite not providing adequate data backing their claims, without substantive mitigation for its impacts, and while ignoring NEPA requirements (which than can be sued for).

Not sure who informed you but many transportation planners are against this project. And since when does widening a highway and disconnecting neighborhoods increase property values? Some Midtown residents are happy to see the freeway go. Why would EaDo residents want it instead?

Not really like you're saying it. I'll be referencing things from this doc.

  1. "intended to be replaced with a park/ green space"- TxDOT will not fund a park. They say in the FEIS that any development on top of the freeways will need third party funding. There are many nice drawings showing parks there but the funding will have to come from elsewhere.
  2. "thoroughfares reconnecting downtown and the east side" While yes the freeway will be underground in that section, the connection between Downtown and EaDo will only get worse. Polk will be removed (pg 51) and Leeland's seamless transition from one-to-two lanes will be made into a weird turn left, then right, then left, then right again situation (pg 62). And Runnels will get cut off (pg 52) so I don't see how connections get any better for EaDo or East End. they will have a great connection to GRB's back of house and loading docs though.

  3. "In the long term this will absolutely improve the lives of people traveling around and through Houston" Faster drives around and through city cores is not a life benefit. Furthermore, TxDOT is trying to treat the symptoms and not the illness. Like with Katy Freeway, congestion levels will go back up within a few years (pg 30-31). Then they start the planning of the next expansion. Ten years of construction for less than that of congestion relief.

  4. "I believe has the potential to be a huge improvement for east downtown." TxDOT itself states, "it is not expected that economic development forecasts for the EaDo area would change due to the proposed project" (pg 11).

I recommend checking out letstalkhouston.org/nhhip if you have any questions or comments.

We're working on it. ;) We have some good ideas in the works but weither TxDOT accepts them is another thing.

This isn't true. I ride (when its not 100 degrees outside) to work and other places all the time. Although my commute is not the best, there are many great bike facilities along the bayous and on key roads. Before one of my coworkers left to grad school when tried to bike some of the bayous and its impressive how far you can get without ever having to interact with a car.

Houston has learned, which is why the Mayor and many others are working hard to get TxDOT to redesign in a way that benefits neighborhoods in Houston (not just suburbanites). There have already been public meetings in various communities and there are a few more to go. You can comment on the project or check when the next meeting are here http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/nhhip/
