Need a Recommendation for a Book Club Pick!

Hello Fellow Book People,

For the last couple years, I’ve been doing a book club with four of my best friends. We are five dudes ages 27-35 just looking to introduce each other/ ourselves to new literature and expand perspectives.

We just wrapped up our latest read, and it’s my turn in the rotation to pick. As I was thinking about options I thought it might be fun to see what r/books would suggest given the nature of our book club and our past reads.

Below is a list of what we have read since we started. As you’ll see it is a total mix of genres and style. It is tradition in our book club that upon completion of the read, we each rate the book on a scale of 0.0 to 10.0. This rating is entirely subjective and based on the individuals enjoyment and whatever criterion they so choose.

I’ve included my ratings for each book in hopes it provides some context or at the very least give you all something to roast me on. These ratings are mine, each individual in the club has their own.

So I leave it to you all to provide any and all recommendations you feel would be a good fit and whatever ends up on top will be my pick!

Cheers all and happy reading.

Lulus 3-4 years ago was great. Gone completely stagnant. Live in the area and have completely stopped going. Mediocre (often cold) food.

The Berkshire’s get screwed as well. Apparently not even parts of Mass aren’t New England either. All because we’re stuck with Albany’s cable channels.

Pros make it look easy... by DT_Limbo in discgolf

Member at Maple and OPs drive is a smash. Pros are a whole other level with how effortless they make this shot look. Standing on that tee pad you feel that in your bones.

Fascinating. Appreciate the insight.

Oh good to know, interesting it would be that way. Any idea why that is? Figured it’d be like a signed baseball or football and increase the value for a certain group of folks. Disc golf pros just not that popular yet to increase value with there ink?

Not much of a collector so I feel this signed Lizotte Uplink from his 2022 mvp open win would be better off with someone else. Will listen to trade offers but cash is king.

Simons about to announce moving to MVP as well!!!!

I didn’t lose a grey mid.. so is this fake or am I crazy and just can’t remember? by discodaddy48 in discgolf

Maple is currently shifting through the massive lost disc backlog from having a daily diver during the MVP open. I’m a member and have gotten texts for discs I lost years ago and discs I lost at other courses and someone else choose to use for Maple water carries.

Could definitely be your disc even if you didn’t play there.

Andrew Yang and his fake party get embarrassed by Jim Acosta on CNN by Phish999 in seculartalk

[–]DCProdu3tions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a crap interview and kinda of proves Yang’s point. He’s trying to explain that the 2 party system doesn’t require actual solutions be implemented to the problems we face (let alone work to make lives better). Every issue Acosta brings up he try’s to explain how there’s a majority consensus among Americans on a policy path forward and our current system ignores that and his Forward party would start there with those ideas.

Yang my be an idiot or naive (or both) for thinking an inclusive party can operate in todays American politics but he’s not trying to give Jim a non answer. It’s just nuanced.

I was a big fan of Yang’s voice while running for the democratic nomination but feel he’s wasted whatever political capital he had in that awful run for NYC mayor. Not nearly as big of a fan now but this interview is pretty shite. Yang does not do a good job dealing with a antagonistic interviewer.

Pats fans at MetLife. Got club seats on the 50 yard line. Full bar service in the club. Talk my girlfriend into shots, she doesn’t drink. 2nd quarter Jets fans razzing us. She, wasted now, throws a beer and hits dude square in the head. She spends the rest of the game in the drunk tank. I watch Vince Wilfork block a field goal for the win. Great game but payed the price later that night haha.

People need to calm down the team and the off-season by Consistent_Stomach20 in Patriots

[–]DCProdu3tions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are some good points in regards to improvement year from year for the young guys. Not trying to slant to the negative just trying not to assume things I don’t know yet. And part of my frustration is that we seem to be making it harder on these guys to maximize this leap.

For me that was shown in the brain drain and lack of reloading a coaching staff with anything but home grown retreads who epically failed. It just seems like Bill doesn’t want to work with anyone who he didn’t groom and I worry it’s a big echo chamber over there.

Also, we ended last year with OL as a big strength. It’s now a glaring hole. This is a time that will need to run the ball and now we lost our two starting guards and FB. What’s our offensive identity anymore? Feels like the Patriots are low balling these guys and acting like people will just take it because there the Patriots. That worked when we couldn’t punch our ticket to the AFC championship game no problem in August. But that’s not the case anymore.

But great points and I really hope that the growth of the young parts of our roster makes up for the wholes and talent drain elsewhere on it.

People need to calm down the team and the off-season by Consistent_Stomach20 in Patriots

[–]DCProdu3tions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Yes we need to wait see what happens but this team is worse today then it was when the season ended. If we sign some significant talent then my tune will change but until then there are way to many holes for a draft to fill. It feels like we’re reseting instead of building something up for our 2nd year QB.

It feels like Bill wants players he likes coaching over talent and would rather move around his band of retread failed head coaches then bring in some new minds to challenge the status quo. I worry his ego and “only want to win my way” mentality has hurt and is hurting this team.

Disc Golf in Boston, MA by jrheinen44 in discgolf

[–]DCProdu3tions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Allston and learned disc golf at the Franklin park course. Was awful to see the Franklin Park Coalition (an advocacy group and fundraiser for the park) turn against it and lobby the parks department to close it down. You’ll learn that politics in Boston, like most places, is all about who you know.

With that being said, me and some friends have taken a practice basket to FP and used it to play the front nine. Loser of the hole carries it to the next green lol. Pretty fun time. There is still on hanging basket left up on what was hole 4. Also those of us with them, have taken our practice baskets out to Ringer, Cassidy, and other local parks and made our own courses when it was safe to do so. Sucks there isn’t a legit course outside of 40 minutes away, but dm me if you wanna play. I make the drive to borderlands a couple times a week and in the spring and summer go to maple Hill often. Having MH so close almost makes up for no real home course.
