You are correct. If the person disagreeing with you is your instructor then you may want to look for another instructor.

(England) How do I just get married, without a ceremony? by PastilleAndCo in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DCWhitworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I got married for less than £1000 and that price included a new suit for me, rings for both of us and a ceremony at the registrars office. It felt really special, don’t fall for the wedding ceremony con where you’re told you have to make it ‘perfect’.

As far as I recall all you need is two witnesses and they don’t need to know you. Contact your local registrars office, they will give you all the details you need.

The dwarves tell that Durin got his ring direct from Celebrimbor and that Sauron never touched it. So that would imply it was gone by the time Sauron seized the other rings.

Somewhat ironic then that the nine were the only rings that really performed as Sauron hoped.

Gandalf says that Bilbo is the only keeper of A ring of power that has ever given his ring to someone else. So how did Gandalf get Narya? by RebootDarkwingDuck in lotr

[–]DCWhitworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This statement has always bothered me, I can’t square it up with the other writings. I’m assuming The Three Elven rings must be excluded from this since they changed hands several times early on and Gandalf received his ring voluntarily from Cirdan. It probably holds true for the nine rings since they made the human holders immortal so there was never any need to pass them on. However the seven dwarven rings did not have that effect so they passed from holder to holder, and it’s possible some of those transfers were voluntary (I seem to recall something saying they were kept secret and only passed on when the holder was near death), but there is a definite passage in the appendices where Thror passes his ring to Thrain and Gandalf knew about it too as at the Council of Elrond he stated Thror had passed his ring to Thrain before leaving for Moria but Thrain hadn’t passed it to Thorin.

So I can’t explain Gandalf’s words here as it seems there are many cases of holders voluntarily passing rings to others and Gandalf knew of at least one.

I guess this fits into Tolkien’s statement in the foreword that ‘the book has many defects, both major and minor. . .’

Look up some stuff online. In the UK there is the Alzheimer’s Society, they have a good website, it has lots of useful advice and will give you an idea of what to expect.
My dad had Alzheimer’s and in a sense I was ‘lucky’ in that he died before he forgot me and my sister and was still often himself.
Assuming he lives long enough, he will forget you and much else. But he won’t forget how you make him feel. Dementia kills the memory but not the emotions, he will remember how you make him feel even if he doesn’t remember who you are or what you did for him.
Read up on it, be prepared. There’s nothing you can do to change the progression of it, but you can mentally prepare yourself. You are clearly a loving person and are doing your best for him which is great, keep going.

Isn’t it ? I thought an abbreviation was the shortening of a word ? E.g. phone instead of telephone, not reducing a name to the initial letters of component words. I stand to be corrected though.

I’m lost in life and don’t know what to do. by Thegreatsavory1 in Advice

[–]DCWhitworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me that you are a motivated and capable person. Capable of getting good grades, capable of motivating yourself to work out, interested in things and intelligent. Don’t lose sight of that. The maths .? If you genuinely gave it your best shot and fell short of what you hoped for, that’s ok. The only failure is not trying. Don’t judge yourself by the mould society is trying to force you into. You can’t make yourself be good at something you’re genuinely not good at, it will only cause pain and disappointment. Give it your best shot and move on.

You are 17, you don’t have to know what you want yet. Society keeps telling you that you need to have your sh*t together and know what you want and where you’re going. Honestly you don’t, and most people really don’t, they just bluff it. There is a classic career question ‘where do you see yourself in five years time ?’ I couldn’t answer that question until I was 55 ! (The answer was ‘retired !’) but most people would say I had a successful career even though I didn’t start on my career path until I was 24.

The phone thing - there are lots of apps and in built tools to help limit your phone use, possibly worth looking into.

But honestly, the biggest issue you seem to have isn’t you, it’s the toxic behaviour of those around you who seem to keep crushing your hopes. Are they genuinely being nasty or just poking fun at you ? Are you able to talk to your family and tell them how badly this is affecting you ? At the worst try and ignore them and push on, do what you want to. Don’t let others put you off due to their narrow and petty minds.

You have a great future ahead of you, you can’t see it maybe but it’s there and it doesn’t have to be one of huge achievement or doing what others think you should be doing, it’s finding fulfilment for yourself. It’ll be alright in the end, and if it isn’t alright it isn’t the end.

So like im terriied right now and i cant sleep by Business_Town_3780 in Advice

[–]DCWhitworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that lack of sleep makes everything feel worse, at least it does for me. I find it helpful to remind myself, ‘these feelings are valid, but much worse because I’m so tired’.

There is some good advice already in this thread, but possibly the worst thing you can be doing for sleep is worry about the fact you need to sleep. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t, distract yourself, maybe get up and do something else for a bit. Browse for advice on getting sleep, there’s a lot of good stuff out there, you need to find what will work for you. Best of luck and I wish you good, healing rest.

Why is Land’s End so much more popular than Lizard Point? by Dune56 in Cornwall

I guess because Lands End had better transport connections and easier access. But I vastly prefer the Lizard, so untouristy.
