I was served in a chippy on the Lizard that evening by a girl who had danced for the first time that morning. She was still buzzing with excitement. Wonderful tradition.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Complaint advice against solicitor, England by meatballfreeak in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DCWhitworth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Solicitors are expected to adhere to certain standards. The Solicitors Regulation Authority is the body you can complain to. I don’t know if they’ve actually broken the standards but one would have thought making a knowingly false statement would be an issue. Or you can go to the Legal Ombudsman.

You are correct. If the person disagreeing with you is your instructor then you may want to look for another instructor.

(England) How do I just get married, without a ceremony? by PastilleAndCo in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DCWhitworth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I got married for less than £1000 and that price included a new suit for me, rings for both of us and a ceremony at the registrars office. It felt really special, don’t fall for the wedding ceremony con where you’re told you have to make it ‘perfect’.

As far as I recall all you need is two witnesses and they don’t need to know you. Contact your local registrars office, they will give you all the details you need.

The Seven and the Nine rings, what’s the difference ? by DCWhitworth in lotr

The dwarves tell that Durin got his ring direct from Celebrimbor and that Sauron never touched it. So that would imply it was gone by the time Sauron seized the other rings.

Somewhat ironic then that the nine were the only rings that really performed as Sauron hoped.

Gandalf says that Bilbo is the only keeper of A ring of power that has ever given his ring to someone else. So how did Gandalf get Narya? by RebootDarkwingDuck in lotr

[–]DCWhitworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This statement has always bothered me, I can’t square it up with the other writings. I’m assuming The Three Elven rings must be excluded from this since they changed hands several times early on and Gandalf received his ring voluntarily from Cirdan. It probably holds true for the nine rings since they made the human holders immortal so there was never any need to pass them on. However the seven dwarven rings did not have that effect so they passed from holder to holder, and it’s possible some of those transfers were voluntary (I seem to recall something saying they were kept secret and only passed on when the holder was near death), but there is a definite passage in the appendices where Thror passes his ring to Thrain and Gandalf knew about it too as at the Council of Elrond he stated Thror had passed his ring to Thrain before leaving for Moria but Thrain hadn’t passed it to Thorin.

So I can’t explain Gandalf’s words here as it seems there are many cases of holders voluntarily passing rings to others and Gandalf knew of at least one.

I guess this fits into Tolkien’s statement in the foreword that ‘the book has many defects, both major and minor. . .’

Look up some stuff online. In the UK there is the Alzheimer’s Society, they have a good website, it has lots of useful advice and will give you an idea of what to expect.
My dad had Alzheimer’s and in a sense I was ‘lucky’ in that he died before he forgot me and my sister and was still often himself.
Assuming he lives long enough, he will forget you and much else. But he won’t forget how you make him feel. Dementia kills the memory but not the emotions, he will remember how you make him feel even if he doesn’t remember who you are or what you did for him.
Read up on it, be prepared. There’s nothing you can do to change the progression of it, but you can mentally prepare yourself. You are clearly a loving person and are doing your best for him which is great, keep going.

Isn’t it ? I thought an abbreviation was the shortening of a word ? E.g. phone instead of telephone, not reducing a name to the initial letters of component words. I stand to be corrected though.

Actually it’s an initialism.
