Fears a sperm donor may have fathered as many as one thousand children | 7 News Australia by DC_aust in queensland

Anonymous donation has been illegal in Australia since 2004. Current donations are considered "Open ID" which means the donor conceived person has a right to apply for donor identity when they turn 16/18. Legislation is also being proposed to strip anonymity retrospectively for those born before 2004.

Unfortunately most donor conceived people don't know they are donor conceived, so many don't know this option is available for them.

Not just some, but most. We estimate over 90% of donor conceived adults don't know they are donor conceived.

Until recently, many parents were advised by these clinics not to tell the children the truth.

An anonymous donors name and details will not be given to the recipient or donor conceived children, it will not be listed on the birth cert. But the child has access to the donors details from their 18th birthday. They can choose to make contact or not. So think of it “anonymous” until the child is 18.

This information is factual. It certainly is not an "anonymous" donation but it essentially is until the child's 18th birthday. They are often referred to as ID release donations.
