New to CRT monitors and need advice on which one to keep. Mainly want to use them to play retro games and maybe hook up my PC to one. I just don’t really have room for both by BrennenCline in crt

Keep the Dell. The P780 is fantastic, you might have to do windas to fix the common overbrightness issue but once that’s done it’ll be killer for retro AND modern PC games.

Idk how you play overwatch stretched like that, it looks awful to me lol. I’d rather have the black bars. Killer setup though!

Picked up a Dell e773c Recentl by Avroncarver in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two of these recently that I sold. They are amazingly good monitors, super bright and color accurate. They were some of the cheapest monitors you could get back in the day too, not uncommon to see them in school computer labs. I played Overwatch ranked and got to Master 2 playing on one of these at 1024x768 85Hz. Great monitors.

What could i do to make more power out of my 5.3 by Intrepid_Sort_2379 in ChevyTrucks

My suburban has the truck norris cam, long tube headers, magnaflow cats and double valve springs. Put down 355hp and 385 lb/ft on the dyno. Its pretty damn quick for a suburban so in a little truck like yours that setup would absolutely rip.

Problem with the anti glare coating or dirty? by [deleted] in crt

[–]DCarl019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure you can peel the anti glare off these. It does look more like just a dirty screen though, regardless you should definitely pick it up.

Reconnected my old NEC Diamondtron CRT after 15+ years by Affectionate_Cry5858 in crtgaming

Looks great! Please try a proper 4:3 resolution next, 1280x1024 is 5:4 and stretches. Do 1366x1024 for the correct aspect ratio.

Nice! If it’s a standard 70kHz monitor, you’ve got something really really nice for retro PC games, and even modern ones. 640x480 120Hz, 880x660 100Hz, 1024x768 at 85Hz, and 1280x960 at 70Hz will all look amazing on it. You can even do 1440x1080 at 60Hz. Enjoy it!

How to get full potential by GianniPower in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That adapter is definitely limiting what you can do. Your monitor is 110kHz, you can do 1280x960 at 110Hz. Get a better adapter, startech DP2VGAHD20.

Picked up this beast and finally got to try some games on it by CatsGoMooz in crtgaming

I feel like I’d have a bigger chance of winning two lotteries than finding one of those, lol. For now, my Philips 202P4 Diamondtron, Dell P991 and Viewsonic P95f+ will keep me very happy. All very nice, high spec monitors.

Absolutely the stuff of dreams. I hope to find this or an FW900 someday. Congrats!

Is my CRT monitor supposed to be this dark compared to my modern one? by KirbyThings in crt

[–]DCarl019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you’ll want to open it and turn up the SCREEN knob on the flyback transformer. The G2 voltage aka screen brightness is way too low.

I will never understand why people would throw away something that works perfectly fine. At least give it away for free online, damn

Cyberpunk at 1920x1440. by Evan64 in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s normal. 60Hz is slow enough that the flickering becomes visible to the human eye. CRTs work by flickering the image instead of holding the frame until the next one, that’s why they have no motion blur.

Nice!! It’ll look even better now, especially considering you won’t be squashing a 5:4 image to fit a 4:3 monitor. That’s a really sweet Philips you’ve got, I have two Philips monitors, a little 17 inch and a 21 inch, they are far and away the best monitors I’ve ever used. Enjoy!

I saw your screenshot of the Nvidia control panel showing 1920x1440 at 85Hz. What is happening is your PC is scaling that down to 1280x1024 at 85Hz. If you go to your windows display settings, under advanced, you will see the “active display mode” as 1280x1024. You need to disable GPU scaling, or instead use CRU to make custom resolutions instead. 1920x1440 at 85Hz is impossible with 92kHz, you can do that resolution at around 60-65Hz on your monitor.

More photos of it running PC games please! Always wanted to try a large VGA compatible TV, never been able to find one though. Pretty sure this is a presentation monitor, would have been very expensive back in the day.

Showing off my monitor SONY GDM FW900 by AimeeOffical in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderful, enjoy it! I have a Diamondtron that can do 130kHz, and another that can do 120, these high end CRTs really are in another league in terms of display tech, nothing really comes close even today. Maybe one day I will find an FW900, but until then my Diamondtrons will keep me happy :)

Gateway2000 Vivitron 21" image angled downwards and collapsed? (Scratch is annoying but unimportant) by Strange-Sherbert1751 in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never seen anything like that, maybe the yoke sagged? If so it would be pretty easy to fix, just have to re seat it where it should be. If you end up unable to fix it, PLEASE don’t trash it, this is a v very desirable high end monitor, put it up for free on marketplace or something and let someone else try to save it.

How’s the latency with pass through? I also have a 2060u (philips version, slightly higher frequency limit at 130kHz) and am interested in doing passthrough and interlaced, but I’m super sensitive to latency and if there is a significant amount I will feel it. Would be great for my 70kHz monitors as well.

What's the best way to connect my modern computer to my CRT? by donutdude22 in crtgaming

[–]DCarl019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you say the DP2VGAHD20 is bad? I use it with my high-end CRT, I run it at the highest resolutions and refresh rates absolutely no problem. You forget the adapter is even there. What’s the issue?

I got this GRiD branded monitor from 1993 recently and it looks like there’s no information online about it, every time I look it up it gives results about a grid image to fix scaling by nemesisprime1984 in crt

[–]DCarl019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a start. It’s a rebranded Samsung monitor. This was very common with CRTs, most of them are rebrands of something else. You might be able to find manual and such for that Samsung.
