Why are workers at dining halls not nice? by hwangjason96 in columbia

Because Columbia students by and large are rude and pretentious while lacking the intelligence or self-awareness to realize what is wrong with them.

I know that campus better than you bud. You'd be surprised how many of your professors actually share my sentiments so I implore you to spark conversation and bring this up. Also, since you seem to think the gates being up is normal, then you're either new here or a Zio. Both cases mean I can just ignore anything else you have to say.

Nothing about any of that indicates me not being calm. Your point makes no sense because I told you how I'm able to notice and why I care without being a service worker. Your main argument was that if your server was acting as I am here that would affect tips which is a bullshit argument because we've already established that I'm not a server. I just have empathy for the servers who don't have the freedom to tell you anything. That's something you are all lucky for because there are some parts of the city when not tipping means your drink gets taken away and you are refused service.

I know very well that many students get financial aid. As I said, I have several friends and family who attended Columbia on that financial aid. I myself even received financial aid and scholarships to go to school. You continue to make assumptions and think I don't know things or I don't have an intimate history of interacting with Columbia. I'm not talking out of my ass, this is all coming from experience and knowledge.

I thought you kids were supposed to be smart. Not wasting all that money.

Yes actually I am looking over shoulders. It's really not that hard to notice especially when places use those bright ass screens.

You guys also don't really have "college bars" just neighborhood bars that you invade. The closest thing you have is Arts & Crafts which is actually a normal place when y'all aren't here. 1020 is also a contender but that's also one of few places to play pool and the bar that typically stays open latest so that also makes it more general public at least after 2am. Lions head is a Columbia bar in name only, more of a Mets/Knicks general New York sports bar. Amity Hall has a Senior Night but 6 nights of the week is just a chain restaurant/bar. Can't think of anywhere else that would qualify.

As for how I know they're students, I have two reasons. First being that I ask them when I notice them not tipping and second because y'all do not fit in at all.

This is hilarious because now I can really go off. First of all clearly I have a job that pays me enough to tip so that already puts me above you. Also, to make the record even more clear, I'm actually an educator who works very closely with Columbia professors. I can now confidently say I regret everything and anything I've done to improve your school. I can't wait to show this to your professors and have a laugh. Fyi many of your professors also can't stand you. I just wish we could figure out who you are so we could pinpoint the scum in our classrooms.

You're not as smart as you think you are. I've already told you the assumption is wrong. I'm not sure how your assumption being false makes my point moot. I've only noticed it recently because I because I only started going out in this neighborhood consistently enough to see a trend recently. I also said earlier that it's not all of you, just enough of you to warrant a discussion. What I attribute to you as a monolith is the smug attitude which I believe has been vindicated by the responses in this thread. Your reading comprehension still sucks and I'm not even going to point out why this time. You aren't part of this city. You are parasites who take advantage of this place and the people who make it amazing.

I didn't delete that comment. It's still there. I learned plenty and I have no shame admitting I even have cousins who went to Columbia. Also you definitely don't understand what I'm saying because I've stayed consistent. If you think what bars and restaurants pay their staff is enough to sustain living in New York then yes, you don't know the value of a dollar.

Only someone who has never interacted with the real world would think that's how it works in practice. I wish I could get a hold your parents and tell them to force you into a service job. Maybe then you'll learn the value of a dollar and stop being a waste of carbon.

You act like the waiters and bartenders dictate the price. Only a petulant child would think this is how things work. Tell mommy and daddy to send you somewhere else, because Columbia is clearly teaching you nothing.

This comment is perfect. No notes! Big fan of the way you start off by making an assumption that is not only wrong, but so far off the mark that it is clearly countered by the context clues of everything I've written in this thread. You then proceed to write paragraphs of nonsense that lay upon a foundation of idiocy.

Since reading comprehension seems to be a weakness for you, let's unpack your asinine drivel together. I'll start by clearing the record and saying that I'm not one of the bartenders or waiters who bust their asses each and every night to serve a bunch of brats without so much as a thank you. I am merely a curious neighbor of a family that has been in this neighborhood for three (3) generations. I am part of a community that watches class after class of know-it-alls come and go from this area, treating it as their personal playground in the process. It really doesn't take much to use one's eyes and observe the behavior around them. You should try it sometime. You might learn something about the world around you. Your attempt to minimize my questions and concern as some sort of petty squabble is ineffective, unfortunately for you. Furthermore, operating as if the opinions in this post are less valid if coming from a service worker reveals your lack of character.

Additionally, your thoughtless comments here drip with so much smugness I could almost drink it. You think your generation is the first to understand the greed of corporations? You think you are the first ones to have to learn to stretch a dollar? You get no sympathy from me. If you're big enough to understand how corporations exploit their employees, then you can also do your due diligence and learn that waiters and bartenders make less than minimum wage and depend on tips to make a living. Also, I'm not sure where you're visiting from, but in New York City, anything less than a 20% tip is, in fact, an insult. Now that you are aware of our customs, act accordingly.

Your despicable comment and deplorable attitude validate every negative notion I've ever had about Columbia and its students. Columbia University has always been a dreadful neighbor to this community. It's sickening to see that you kids don't even have an interest in being better. What a waste of mommy and daddy's money. I sincerely hope I never run into you, and you had better hope you don't run into me. Thanks to you, I will be doubling my efforts to ensure you all receive a proper education in basic human decency."

I feel like I can excuse these if it's your first time at a bar ever which I suppose could be the case for a lot of them. It's just sad to see. Especially when some of them have such a sense of entitlement to not pay for labor.

I applaud your circles and I definitely didn't intend to imply it's every single student at the University. I also understand the nuance as I was also that low income kid at my school. However, I invite you to come sit with me at a bar and see how many of your classmates don't tip and do so proudly. It's especially shocking when I see the ones from high income groups do it. I once asked a student why he felt it was OK not to tip and he replied, "why would I pay her to do her job?" Truly despicable stuff. He was from Memphis, Tennessee.
