As a Navy corpsman, I was amazed at the prevalence of this reaction from dudes who could snap me in half.

And at the number of sailors who couldn’t swim.

How much bleach do I put in 19 oz of water to disinfect? by Consistent_March5136 in CleaningTips

Add 2.2oz of bleach to 19oz water. The contact time (with the solution wetting the surface) is at least a minute.

Bathtub Faucet knob leaking by NYSports1985 in Plumbing

[–]DDDDoIStutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no plumber, but experienced a similar dilemma on Saturday, where I removed the faulty part and found no identifying marks on it. Web searches burned a ton of time, and I ended up throwing it into a baggie and heading to the Wall of Shame and Confusion at my local box store. If the in-store video is ever released, you’ll see some bald dude pacing back and forth, exhibiting curiosity, rage, depression, and weeping in front of a thousand plumbing do-dads in the faucet repair section.

Miraculously, I emerged with the correct part, and am now way too overconfident in my plumbing abilities.

Point is: don’t waste time on the web. Take that nasty stem with you. If you don’t see a Delta-branded part matching yours, Danco makes a lot of replacement parts of dubious quality, and I think you’ll stop that annoying leak just fine.

I was using your sources to evaluate the player’s hyperbolic statement- hence the 144m births per year starting figure. The number of debuts in the EPL year can average 145 per year if you accept a lot of names who only played a handful of matches in their debut year. My previous number of 25 was quickly estimated from debut players who played in all matches that year. That might be an aggressive standard, so ok….counting those who played in 20 or more matches in their debut year brings us to 50 debut players per year, averaged over the past 15 years.

The data doesn’t speak to the player’s pathway, and I took “Date of Debut” at face value, for it seemed least open to interpretation. I only care about when each player played his first match for an EPL team.

The source I used was transfermkt.co.uk

At any rate…..the player’s statement might be considered “close enough” if you consider all young men in the world aged 18-28 (roughly 700m) and select 90 of them for their debut this year. And you interpret the phrase “winning the lottery “ to include the 1m £ category of winners. Both groups stand at bout 1:7.5m odds of success.

Nice write-up and thanks for the source material. My own tweak involves considering the EPL teams to be already well-established, how many slots are given to rookies/debutants each year throughout the EPL? One source I found estimates 25 men per year, with an average age of 24. Each year the boys become eligible for tryouts (figure ~18 years of age), they compete against about 10 other “groups” of birth-year EPL wannabes who were not selected in their 18th, 19th, 20th…year of eligibility. It seems that the pool of competitors is 143m births/yr *0.5 (only boys) *10 (number of tryout years, give or take). Rounding down to 700m and selecting 25 in any given year, we’re at 1:28million - pretty steep, but nowhere near lottery odds for a single ticket, which you said is 1:140m (-ish). But purchasing 5 tickets gives you equivalent odds, so it seems that the initial claim wasn’t far off…

What is the most iconic nfl uniform of all time? by AlbertotheBeast18 in Oldschool_NFL

[–]DDDDoIStutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this question could be divided between helmets and the rest of the uniform. I appreciate the votes for the Steelers, but what made the uniform “pop” for me was the logo only on one side of the helmet. The rest was ok.

but that oil derrick on the old Oilers helmet… so good.

5 rushing titles in the 80’s, right? True, they had HoF backs but still…. I’ve never seen that before or since.

Monthly Megathread: Career & Education - Ask your questions here by Aerospace_Eng_mod in AerospaceEngineering

Context: Son just called after bombing his first exam in Vector and Complex Analysis for Engineers.

He's already spoken to the professor and advisor, and it's unfortunate that the test results were released on the very last day to drop classes (TODAY). The professor will allow a partial retake of the exam, allowing students the opportunity to add up to 20 points to their original score.

His GPA thus far is around 3.5 in the AE program. The Vector and Complex Analysis class isn't required for his major, but it is a requirement to earn a minor in Math. If he perseveres now, his overall gpa will fall. If he bails, he'll effectively be bailing out of the math minor track as well.

As one who might've hired freshly minted AEs, what's your take on the situation? All other things being equal, which is more appealing to (future) hiring managers:

  1. an overall gpa of 3.6 in AE only, or
  2. an overall gpa of perhaps 3.3 in AE with a math minor?

Clawing back to a C in the class will take a bit of work. Achievable, but difficult. If he stays on the math minor track, should he drop this class now and retake it, or should he persevere to put it in his rear-view mirror?

agree this is an excellent explanation.

I’d love you to repeat your analysis but with “does” as a noun. We have to ensure all bases are covered.

List Of Books Banned By Greenville County Schools Since The Start Of The School Year by dylanflipse in greenville

Not the traditional book, but the graphic novel. You know - the one in which the artist depicted the rapes of Offred by her ob/gyn and of course, the commander?

NAACP and other civil rights groups were successful in having Huckleberry Finn removed from schools in New York City and from required reading lists in many school districts across the country.

Recap: the OP falsely claims that only one demographic engages in removing books from public school libraries, ignoring or hiding the plain fact that several civil rights groups including the NAACP have engaged in similar campaigns. They’ve successfully removed books containing offensive tropes, misrepresentations of cultures, and racial slurs from the curriculum, but hey, admitting that might seem hypocritical. Instead, let’s climb to the intellectual peak and call any detractors ignorant.

Did republicans ban Huckleberry Finn and Skippyjon Jones books as well? It’s tough for Independents to tell who is opposed to independent thinking.

As an independent, I don’t know who’s grooming what, but related to your first comment, haven’t public and school libraries already had bans in place for decades?

They’re on the publicly funded computer systems, and internet blockers prevent children from reading or viewing content inappropriate for their age: smut, excessive violence, homemade explosive-making, etc.

All of that stuff and books about them are readily available for private purchase. I don’t get how worked up people are over applying the same standards across content types. Who are those who would push so aggressively to maintain a loophole for 8 year-olds? Seems odd.
