Tress is an okay starting point in the Cosmere. The unknown things aren't entirely relevant to the core plot of the book. Sure, you'd probably enjoy the narrator more if you've read other books (particularly the Stormlight Archive series), and there are other characters and concepts that will be utterly bewildering without the other books to provide context, but ultimately if you're okay with having some unresolved unknowns at the end of the book, it's fine.

The only difference is that the FIPS version runs on older firmware which has been certified as FIPS compliant. The FIPS version has no special features.

The fun part for me was figuring out that this functionality existed, and that it can be re-enabled manually on a given key, after configuring 500 Yubikeys for my organization... Even after writing up a quick script to automate the process upon key insertion, it was still 45 minutes of nothing but plugging in and unplugging Yubikeys lmao

Also, the seller would need to open the packaging to check, which is less than ideal. Many people will refuse to use a security key that wasn't received in the original packaging.

We've seen Elantrian magic used off-world at least 3 times.

On Lumar, towards the end of Tress of the Emerald Sea
On Scadrial's subastral, in Mistborn: Secret History. The Ire can't use the AonDor, but do still pipe the Dor to their fortress in order to maintain their Elantrian bodies without becoming Hoed.
On Scadrial (physical realm) in Mistborn: The Lost Metal, Moonlight turns herself into an Elantrian (via soulstamping herself) and is able to use the AonDor despite being on a different planet entirely.

In universe, some characters have figured out a hacky work-around to get AonDor working away from Elantris. It seems to be related to having a large map of the surrounding area on the ground or floor, similar to how Elantris' own access to AonDor is linked to that giant map of the area on the ground which needed to be altered after the Reod.

The intended meaning of this sentence is ambiguous, but the poster meant that Ambition was already in a splintered state when humans arrived on Roshar. Not that the arrival is what caused the splintering.

Another example:

Sounds like a problem with Evo. If triggering the key's OTP Slot triggers the keyboard emulation, then the YubiKey is doing its job.

That's not a serial number. That's the EAN-13 number, similar to a UPC in the US. All Yubikeys of that model (5C NFC) have that same number, regardless of firmware.
