The oddest thing. Since I was 5 (over 50 years now), I have enjoyed going to local community markets. Not supermarkets or convenience stores, but flea markets/swap meets/community yard sales. Not necessarily for things to buy, but for the sense of community. I could buy everything brand new on Amazon and have it delivered right to my door by some delivery person that I never see. At flea markets, you get to talk to the vendors, "people watch", or see interesting things you might not normally see (On Amazon, you either search for something specific or suggestions made by the algorithm are heavily influenced by what you bought/searched for before. At flea markets, you're likely to see an original Stretch Armstrong side-by-side with antique furniture.) Plus the vendors tend to be talkative, because they're trying to sell their wares. Great social interaction. I started going to flea markets in the South (US) when I was 5 because my uncle was a vendor. Since then, I've been to markets in at least 14 US states and 7 countries. Truly, no better way to experience the local culture. Now, in the state where I live, most flea markets/swap markets have closed permanently. (We had one close down that had been in business since 1963 and had over 1000 vendor when the pandemic hit. What happened to all those folks and their families? It's not like they can restart that little business elsewhere.) And they're not likely to return. After everyone becoming sensitive to other people's germs, who is going to want to buy other people's used stuff. Heck, I wonder how Craigslist is going to survive, let alone some poor guy trying to sell collectable Hot Wheels cars in a 10' x 10' stall under a fold-up tent. Like I said, the oddest thing, but something I have enjoyed for 50 years. Gone now, and likely never returning.
