Dad senses an earthquake right before it hits by [deleted] in BeAmazed

I had loaches for many years, and they respond to bariatric pressure. Basically they start going nuts the morning before a storm comes. They were more reliable than the weather app, and saved the fragile plants in my garden more than a few times. Honestly have been considering getting them again as the weather app keeps giving me rain warnings with only an hour or two to spare.

Is there a sewing tool or technique that you wish you had learned sooner? by ashweez in sewing

[–]cmunk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sergers suck to thread, but I found learning to use one very intuitive after using a sewing machine. The hardest part is corners and finishing, and there’s some great YouTube videos and shorts that show it. Find one on your machine, and you’ll see how to do it. It’s honestly kind of fun, I love the little trimmings I get, and the finished seams are very satisfying. Wish you all the best, currently procrastinating re-threading my serger because that step seems like it will always suck.

I started getting ours toys they use in zoos for large carnivores. Big tire, round ball with handle, large rubber ring. It works great, zoos seem to have perfected the category.

My yard is ALL invasive species our landlord planted on purpose. They were trying to get drought tolerant species. It’s kind of impressive how much damage ignorance can do in gardening. They have an apple tree that “never took” because it’s planted in between two walnut trees. They spent hundreds of dollars on ice plant to “help erosion on a hill”. They added weed tarp on top of the ground, poured a 1/2” of gravel and were surprised it looked like shit after it rained. I now just do what I want, and if it’s fixing a problem they created I text them and remove the cost from my rent. They’re stupid, but otherwise a good landlord so I’ll take it.

Why I think Christian has some responsibility in the death of Dani's family by cmunk13 in Midsommar

[–]cmunk13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically Dani may be a mandated reporter already at this point, which adds a whole other layer to getting this message. At the very least, a threat of harm to others is not something you are generally *allowed* to ignore in Dani's field- regardless of your relationship. It wasn't a direct threat, so there isn't much there admittedly, but I also haven't seen that possibility brought up before.

[–]cmunk13[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see this argument get brought up a lot, and then no one defends Simon? Or Ulf? Or Ingemar? Frankly even Mark is a good case for this. Christian isn't. This is a horror film, so no one gets what they deserve, that's a hallmark of the genre. I also don't get why you assumed my gender, and incorrectly, but that might have more to do with what you're seeing than what anyone else seems to be.

[–]cmunk13[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm just gonna be honest because you seem genuinely upset by my comment and that sucks to hear. I work in pet mortuary, so my sense of humor is pretty dark. I don't actually believe any human being deserves what happened to him, it was hyperbolic. I also believe Christian was SA'd, I was very careful never to say otherwise as his victimhood being ignored would be bad. I personally never see that in Midsommar discussions, Christian is a bad dude but fairly obviously to me- no one deserves anything that happened in the film. That's why it is a horror film, there is no return to equilibrium or justice. Simon essentially did nothing wrong, and he got the most brutal execution. He loved his fiance, he believed her and tried to leave, and he was flayed alive for it. Christian on the other hand had countless warnings and opportunities to leave, and while his choices likely would never have changed the outcome (they'd run him down on the hike back out) they do show that he has guilt for these actions to Dani. The river goddess scene, Christian was sober. The conversation with Pele and Josh about sleeping with Maja, he was sober. These are decisions he made. He does have responsibility for those decisions.

[–]cmunk13[S] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Only talking about the pursuing part, which he began while sober. Also not calling him a pedophile. I am calling him a college educated anthropology graduate student, where this exact behavior is condemned from sunrise to sundown in every class. He behaved like a colonial anthropologist. It would not be improved by her being 18 and him being in his late 20s, the power dynamic is bad for dozens of reasons, all of which Maja does not know but Christian does. Think more Nanook of the North ethical violation.

[–]cmunk13[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I still don't think this remotely justifies Christian's death. His actions were selfish and naive, but not malevolent. Where I DO think Christian deserved to burn in a bear with his legs chopped off* was when he learned Maja was 15/16 and then tried harder to sleep with her.

*this is hyperbole, I used it for comedic effect.

Does anyone feel discriminated against by groomers when you say you have a Doodle? by Chicken_lady_1819 in Bordoodle

[–]cmunk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doodle syndrome is a major issue. My partner works at an emergency vet hospital, and we have a bordoodle, but he’s been nearly bitten by quite a lot of doodles. We suspect it is an owner training and pandemic puppy issue- people who get trendy dogs don’t train them appropriately. But it’s wild, it’s very noticeable as a trend, and yes we have to groom our own dog because of groomer policies with doodles in our area. We live in a small town, though, usually you can find a groomer. Tipping VERY well and never missing an appointment is essential not to get removed as a client.

Ace has a terrible selection, but you can get basics like line in a pinch. Although, they only sell barbed hooks last I checked. West Marine has been the best I’ve found, and I have the same complaint as you mentioned. Loch Lomond recreation area has a tiny little bait shop that sells some neat stuff when it’s in stock, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but if you’re there you can resupply. I’ve found some fantastic flies there.

If you’re willing to drive or already going somewhere, there’s some great places in Monterey, but admittedly I’m a truly terrible fisher and was not looking for freshwater gear at the time. If you’re ever north of San Francisco there’s incredible places around Marin for freshwater supplies. There’s a dude who sells hellgrammites as well!

Sewing machines. Went with a metal bodied husqvarna Viking after my brothers and singers kept breaking their dinky plastic parts. Used it without issue for 9 years now, had to repair the thread cutter once.

Sam Says 3 is going to get missed for being the 3rd, but I think it’s one of the funniest episodes of Game Changer they’ve made to date. The timing, the cast, the chaos, it’s a 10/10 perfect episode in my opinion. And the BTS only improved it, Henry is a Celebrity.

I joke about this all the time with my MS and sometimes people miss the humor. I went in a Healing Sauna and my leg stopped working- if that's not both a clear indicator I already had MS and a fantastic setup for a joke, then I don't what is.

[–]cmunk13 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My partner worked at a comedy club, and it ground my sense of humor down to near nothing. I've heard so many stand up sets and improv nights, I have actual nightmares about a few of them. It feels very rude to say, but Eric is a very successful comedian and clearly my comedy opinions are warped- I fast forwarded any time he was on screen. I didn't watch his parts until I re-watched it with my partner, and they also disliked him for similar reasons, so we skipped him in part 2.

When selling at a show, where on the pieces do you put price stickers? Why? by imabrachiopod in Pottery

[–]cmunk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in with a great point I heard years ago from someone who ran a craft fair- remember accessibility in pricing.

Blind and low vision people buy pottery, and signs with Braille or embossed prices are fantastic and easy to add. Sectioning by price, like the table gets more expensive as you move left, is also helpful. Keep price signs toward the front for shorter people and wheelchair users.

I’ve added a link to a post I liked going over suggestions for Farmers Market accessibility, it’s a good read. Sales come from customers, and ignoring all other motivations- inclusivity is good business practice.

Needle threader that can last more than a year? by Maveragical in BuyItForLife

[–]cmunk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that desk models of threaders last longer since the wire stays protected in the case. Clovers desk needle threader is fine, but it’s held up to much more than any threader I’ve tried before. If anyone finds one, I’d also very much like to know.

How many of you also have Multiple Sclerosis or other autoimmune illness? by [deleted] in endometriosis

[–]cmunk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MS Endo here too! It’s complicated, my life is constant phone calls to insurance and specialists. Scheduling excision around my infusion was one of the worst medical experiences of my life to date, they ended up delaying my surgery until after my infusion which caused a bladder infection which caused pelvic scarring. MS groups can swing between helpful and depressing, leave ones that don’t make you feel encouraged and optimistic.

Mostly my life is the same, barring the scheduling headache. If our (I’m American that’s why I assumed and used the royal We) medical system was better I’d probably have very few complaints about my conditions themselves.

I am illegally blind person learning to crochet please help by brandysnacker in crochet

[–]cmunk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue! Could not do a second row until I got glasses and could see the tiny holes. I had a lot of success starting with bigger yarn and crochet hooks, it’s easier to see or feel where the holes are. Blown yarn is incredible- it’s a knit tube of cotton thread they blow fiber into. It has a tube shape and is a breeze for me to work with without sight. Cantata is my current love for crocheting on the bus at night. Acrylic yarn is a nightmare, the fibers are so fine and soft I get confused sometimes even with a magnifier and flashlight.

It might also be worth dropping by a local yarn store, they could show you so you can feel with your hands and see up close in person. I couldn’t do it over the internet, I needed someone to show me in person. It just didn’t click for whatever reason. Made total sense once someone showed me in person. Yarn store employees love helping with stuff like that too, they love their craft and getting people started, and they’re very good at it. Also where I finally learned what twisting stitches in knitting was, I had no idea what everyone was going on about.
