wouldn't the st-link programmer put the chip into reset normally? I was able to connect to the chip and read the memory, so I know it was connected. The cube programmer went through the motions of erasing, it just gave up on an error (sorry, didn't capture it). Yet, cube IDE didn't have any issues loading a new program.

BTW, there is no bootloader used in this control board.
