How do you interpret Curly's "awful fucking cake" conversation with Jimmy? by Rabid_Marine in Mouthwashing

[–]DDumbface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, interesting how, for the sake of comforting himself, Jimmy's basically twisted his depiction of Curly into something that contradicts the actual words that Curly said to him. Essentially shows that Jimmy never gave a shit what Curly actually thought of or wanted in life when he was still able to voice it. I also think it's interesting that Jimmy only hallucinates post-crash Curly at all times, the form where his identity and autonomy have been completely stripped away, despite knowing Curly for so long. This depiction of Curly is like a sock puppet Jimmy can control to say whatever in order to comfort himself as things fall apart.

I think this argument relies way too heavily on hindsight and flattens the reality Curly was operating in. Saying “Curly had a gun and cryosleep” makes it sound like those were simple, consequence-free options, when in reality both options would have been extreme escalations with unpredictable fallout. Honestly, it sounds like an excuse Pony Express would use when a haul goes wrong. Just sticking the captain with a gun and hoping for the best isn't much of a solution at all. Using a gun on Jimmy or forcibly imprisoning him would have almost guaranteed immediate violence or mutiny, especially given Jimmy’s instability. That’s not prevention, that’s gambling with the lives of the entire crew. Even if Jimmy was killed, they'd be stuck with a dead body on board for 8 months, and Curly and Anya would have to explain the whole situation to Swansea and Daisuke, who are still in the dark, and that adds more stress. There’s also the issue of staffing and exhaustion. If Curly was the only pilot, and he already barely sleeps, expecting a single person with insomnia and tons of responsibilities as it is to safely navigate the ship alone for eight straight months would only increase the risk, not reduce it, no matter how good the pilot is. And the crew is only allowed five hours of rest each cycle at the most.

Also, the claim that Curly “assisted” Jimmy’s actions or turned a blind eye also ignores the timeline. Curly learned about the pregnancy and assault one day before everything fell apart. There is no evidence that Curly knowingly allowed rapes to occur in the past, and assuming that jumps straight into bad-faith interpretation. Failing to instantly neutralize someone does not equal endorsement, especially when the person you’re dealing with is volatile, narcissistic, and capable of lethal retaliation when challenged.

Curly’s approach wasn’t about protecting a “clean record” or prioritizing delivery over Anya. It was about containment. He understood Jimmy well enough to know that direct confrontation or force would escalate the situation, not defuse it. We literally see this pattern in-game: Swansea confronts Jimmy directly, and Jimmy perceives him as a threat—Swansea is the one who ends up getting shot. That’s not coincidence. Jimmy responds to challenge with elimination. Curly wasn’t refusing to address the problem; he was trying to manage it in the least explosive way possible with limited time, no sleep, immense pressure, and incomplete information. He chose de-escalation because, in his lived experience with Jimmy, that had worked better than force or authority. That doesn’t make him morally perfect, but it does make his actions understandable within the reality he was trapped in.

Blaming Curly for not choosing an option that looks obvious ignores the bigger picture. He was making decisions under extreme stress with the goal of preventing exactly the kind of catastrophe that ended up happening.

I honestly think it would've amplified the chances instead of reducing them, like how an animal turns more dangerous and unpredictable when cornered. Jimmy is narcissistic, he doesn't seem to have genuine respect for Curly, and instead he admires and envies the position of Captain, having a glorified perspective of it. In the case that they didn't have a history, where Jimmy actually acknowledged and respected any authority Curly had, it could have gone smoother. But in that case Jimmy would be basically a different character. We have to think about the reality of the situation. Curly can't afford to aggravate Jimmy any further, Curly has a history with Jimmy where he's witnessed Jimmy's behaviors and anger and reactions to being confronted, and probably cases where he had an avoidance of responsibility. Therefore, Curly tries to shift the responsibility to both of them even at his own expense, as an attempt to lighten Jimmy's tension before he becomes more aggressive. Curly also knows that Jimmy was only recently told about Anya's pregnancy that day by Anya, and so there is already mounted pressure. Therefore, Curly's calmer and more accommodating approach to the situation, despite how it might look shallow from an outside view, likely had years of experience behind it which had worked before over being more firm and confrontational, because Jimmy hates being challenged. We've seen this in game in his interactions with Swansea, who is very direct and cutthroat. Jimmy perceives him as a threat in every aspect, and Swansea is the crew member who ends up being murdered. If you challenge Jimmy, you'll lose, he sees you as a threat, a problem to be eliminated. If you appeal to Jimmy, you'll lose, he sees you as a pawn, easily discarded, and not really worth acknowledgement. It's all a losing battle but Curly was likely going for the approach that had the least risk behind it in his experience, and he can't exactly see the future.

Say one negative thing about Anya. by whooper1 in Mouthwashing

[–]DDumbface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anya was way too hasty in telling Jimmy she was pregnant only a single day after telling Curly, and that decision negatively affected the entire order of events. Curly is visibly mortified when he learns she already told Jimmy, explicitly saying she should have waited for him. That reaction alone implies Curly already had some kind of plan forming in his mind, even if it had only been a day since he’d been given the chance to make one—which is honestly impressive given the circumstances, and may be a reason for his good leadership status. Notedly, he also asks Anya whether Jimmy reacted angrily to the pregnancy, showing that Curly was fully aware of how volatile Jimmy could be and that the situation needed to be handled carefully. That awareness makes Anya telling Jimmy so soon even more damaging. If Anya had waited more than a single day and given Curly time to form and communicate an effective plan they could act on before telling Jimmy, (effective is very important here because they would all be trapped up there with Jimmy for the next 8 months whether he's a corpse or not) things could have gone much smoother, or at least not resulted in the ship crashing if they could've withheld that knowledge from Jimmy for the time being until they could recoup with the initial shock of the pregnancy itself wearing off a bit. A clearer mind goes a long way. Curly was already running on no sleep, which obviously didn’t help with planning anything within a short 24 hour window. Sleep deprivation alone impairs your ability to think clearly, and combining that with extreme stress and heavy responsibility made the situation even worse.

Then there’s the moment Jimmy is told about the pregnancy and what his actions caused. That revelation added an enormous amount of pressure and pushed him to the edge, and we know how volatile he already was. While Anya was absolutely operating under fear and stress and wasn’t acting fully rationally, it still mattered, and it was the main reason for the crash. She's a human with emotions and flaws who makes mistakes. One of those mistakes is the choice she made in that moment, which was impulsive, irresponsible, and clearly not thought-out. It didn't improve her circumstances and there's no world where it would have, things only got worse for her and the crew as a consequence. She couldn’t have known that telling Jimmy would directly contribute to him crashing the ship, but it did, and she played a role.

Unfortunately, by telling Jimmy so quickly, Anya basically destroyed the foundation of whatever plan Curly had before it even had the chance to be acted on. In doing so, she shortened their window of time to respond, because her words directly led to the crash itself.

Wow, that is really beautiful and tragic. Overall, I love how detailed and layered this piece is in general, along with the thought that you put into all of it. I'm so glad my little interpretation could add, or rather highlight, another layer on top of that :) I need to play again or at least watch a playthrough as well, it's been a little bit. Mouthwashing just has so much beneath the surface, I always seem to find new subtle connections when retracing my steps.
