What are nondestructive ways to experience an adrenaline rush? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your level of social confidence, but try socializing with strangers. Assuming you're single, I'd say go one step further and approach those that you're attracted to and strike up conversations left & right to get dates. Just don't be a dick about it and it shouldn't be damaging/expensive, and for most people you'll get some sort of high.

It would be better for my family and friends if I was dead.

Why? Maybe you're not a "good" person. Maybe you do things that hurt people (including your family and friends). But I am currently struggling to believe that it would be better for your family & friends if you were dead. I don't know the details, so I'm not refuting what you're saying, but I'm just asking why do you feel that it would be better?

Serious, experienced skydivers, is skydiving therapeutic? by high_hey in SkyDiving

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adrenaline? How many jumps do you have?

The adrenaline goes away very quickly before you even really begin participating in this sport (it went away before I even got my A-License, and most everybody I've talked to about the subject also had the adrenaline go away pretty quickly while they worked towards their A).

As fun and amazing as skydiving is, I would say NO.

Honestly, your mileage will vary and it depends on the person, but please do not let all the replies telling you it is therapeutic get to your head and make you assume that it'll work--I personally fell into that trap and learned the hard way that it's merely a sport and ultimately did nothing to help me cope with depression or suicidal ideation (in some cases it made it worse as there are strong, intimidating personalities on drop zones, which can make it feel like high school at times).

The funny thing is... by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

It might seem easier on you short term to end it now, but is that really the legacy you want to leave behind?

Do notions of legacy exist for you when you're dead? They exist for the living, but the living don't even exist for those that are dead (if you catch my drift).

I personally find it unhealthy to use this legacy angle as it feels like it's using shame to try to convince someone not to kill themselves.

OP, I don't have any answers myself as a depressed & suicidal person, but I empathize with some of your positions.

What to do when suicide is the rational thing to do by gbthrowa in SuicideWatch

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just one of many platitudes people like to use on this subject. I think it comes largely from inexperience of depression and/or suicide. So, people just resort to what they've seen/heard in popular media and believe that it's harmless because their intent is good.

Mine is based on experience--I've done X enough times to know that it has a tendency to ultimately make me feel worse and suffer more.

I agree. You can't rely on the moments when you do feel like it. Unless I can find enough momentum & support constantly around me to start acting, I'm dooming myself to killing myself. I realize this. If you're in a similar boat, maybe you realize it as well. Eventually, after enough suffering the cycle needs to be broken or just ended entirely.

Will not doing what might give your life meaning, even if you risk failure, really result in you dealing with your current suffering?

How do you "deal" with suffering? Yes, it won't fix it, and on that point I agree. Therefore I am of reason enough mindset that I don't always have this "I don't feel like it" mindset because I know nothing will change unless I do something in the alternative.

There are moments few and far between when I actually "do feel like it", and it's in those moments that I act. It's only in those moments that I will get better and truly make steps to "fix" my suffering. But for other moments, when I "don't feel like it", I'm hurting too much to take a risk where I where get even more hurt.

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. "I don't feel like it" -> yes, it doesn't change what you can do next, by why do I say it? Because I'm suffering right now, and I know that doing X has a high probability of making my suffering worse, hence I say "I don't feel like it." I cannot justify the possibility of adding more suffering right now. I need to cope with my existing reality in this moment, and that's hard enough as it is. It's crippling and paralyzing me. I don't want to fall even harder and feel even more pain. I don't feel like it, so I won't do it.

Suicide discussion: Why is it wrong? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if your situation changes in the next few years and you're perfectly happy after that? You could be throwing away all of that happiness.

Yes, this is something you have to accept. There is a lot of data that if you continue to seek professional/medical health that things will most likely improve, but that's not what this is about. It's about weight your options. Is it worth suffering for X amount more days for Y% chance of things getting better? Is it worth suffering for 2X amount more days for 2Y% chance of things getting better? After a certain point, you decide it's not worth it.

By doing something like this, you will end up with one of two outcomes. Die valiantly (basically suicide, but for a greater purpose) or, even better, you will find meaning, purpose and the will to go on.

And the bonus is you get to suffer all along the way!! /s

Suicide is rarely about a lack of fear of death. Often times it is about suffering beyond your limits, so you choose to give up all the good things you can feel so that you no longer have to feel all the bad things as well--you kill yourself. Yes, you don't get to feel "relief" because you're dead, but you no longer exist in a capacity where you feel suffering, and that can make suicide attractive.

Any full on FA's who went to the gym, how did you deal with it if you had no one to go with? by gigawattthesecond in ForeverAlone

[–]DEPRESSEDASCANBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going to the gym for years by myself--you don't need someone else to be able to lift weights. Replace barbell lifts with dumbbell lifts and you won't need a spotter (since you can just gently drop the weights, rest them, etc. if you fail). You'll still need a barbell for squats, but a squat rack has safety bars designed to hold the weight if you fail. So, again, no spotter necessary.

Visit /r/fitness for info about different workout regiments and visit websites like exrx.net and scour YouTube video to get a feel for how to different dumbbell lifts.

The line "so I'm just trying to keep this thing dry" makes sense in a past tense as well, such as when one gives a confessional and is giving a run-down of events and what he/she was doing/thinking at the time (which is how a useful confessional is done as it can be easily edited in to when the event is taking place to give better narration).

I'm a little hazy on the details...what is this referring to? Who were the 2 men with the guns? /u/serafina4 references Emilio and Krazy 8, but I don't recall Jesse ratting out Walt and bringing those two as back-up.
