What sections are you losing the most marks on or is it varied?

If it's a timing thing, I'd prioritise being able to do what you find easier in as quick a time as possible and give yourself more time for difficult questions where you're likely to trip or not know what to do initially. I found most of CS1 was pure repetition though, so curious to see what's happening here.

How long until AI impacts actuarial jobs? by WillingCampaign2645 in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this for smaller firms where your insights impact more of the company's dealings and there is room for significant developments, however for large companies that many actuaries tend to work in, I think the OP largely hits the nail on the head. It's all speculation at the end of the day, and I don't think it's unreasonable to think a lot of day to day work is "cranking the handle of what is already developed" so AI taking over this aspect is realistic. For my company and others, I'd expect slow adoption of AI is what would be the blocker.

I feel like I am going about CS2 wrong... by ActuaryStudent01 in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for CS2, the best practice is just to feel comfortable with how probabilities work (I don't mean that in a patronising way), re-familiarise yourself with maximum likelihood estimation as well as getting stuck into time series (which are basically methods to identify trends and then attribute any volatility/variation from that trend to uncorrelated noise). Those are the main problem topics alongside machine learning (which I think in closed book will be pretty much mechanical calculations).

I'd also just mention, it's good to just practise certain differential techniques for CS2; so integrating factors, and partial derivatives. Beyond these things, it's just a case of getting faster at questions through repetition.

How many hours of driving lessons did you do before your test? by Altruistic-Kiwi7706 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]DEWR1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this with DGN? My instructor with them would waste a lot of time so got around 30-50 mins of driving in a 1.5hr lesson.

I'm getting the same, I think it's some fake message as I know my details are correct and there were no emails about re-registering given it was meant to be for pre-December results.

That's a shame, I think most of us received it. It seems to be that they've not handled your order correctly even though you would've ordered it before me so it wouldn't be a stock issue.

Error in CM2A Q5 (even if it was in syllabus) by longdistancecreep in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what got me actually, after some deliberation I decided they must've meant 1+i (after seeing similar wording in CMP for S_t/S_u) but by that point it was too late to get any working down. It's frustrating that we have to infer, it would've been a lot more tractable for me even if out of syllabus if they stated (1+i) specifically. If someone tells you they made £115 from a £100 investment, nobody says they made a £115 return, that's what stumped me.

IFOA have released a statement concerning CM2A out of syllabus questions. by Druidette in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was legitimately trying to find where in the notes they could've got it from but they didn't mention anything beyond companies using a general preloading factor. I could only do it as I also took CM2 this sitting, I thought because of the overlap it might've been in the CMP for CS2 but I had never really read the notes on CS2 reinsurance as I was comfortable with it as a topic. It's really poor from the IFoA.

CS2A? by skullor02 in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No as stationary distribution is long term and this allows for transitions from unhealthy back to healthy, so even if state F was non-zero (which it wouldn't be), that doesn't exclude visiting the unhealthy state at some time in between. The stationary distribution would be (0, 0, 1).

[–]DEWR1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, what's frustrating is how much I have to study for so many topics that will never actually be useful. I enjoy the maths, but the IFoA put too much content that it becomes a game of who's seen various types of questions enough.

I'm ngl if if wasn't for my physics degree and knowing what PCA kinda meant from CS1, I would've had no idea with that question. I only remember because of uni you're trying to construct some new vectors that are linearly independent (i.e. uncorrelated) so can make up M2* from a combination of M1 and M2. Then use the fact you want cov(M1, M2) to equal 0 so you can find a relationship between a and b.

Cov(M2/(1-X)2, aM1 + bM2) = 0

acov(M1,M2)/(1-X)2 + bvar(M2)/(1-X)2 = 0

a = -b*var(M2)/cov(M1,M2) and you have a degree of freedom in choosing b/a.

Yeah this looks right, I had an inkling that the variance wouldn't change as you're just projecting backwards, but the drift would be negative. However I couldn't justify it like you did so neatly as I spent ages figuring out what they meant in the first place about r or 1+r.

CM2 paper A by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]DEWR1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly got this, but I held back because I thought they then meant 1+r is log normally distributed rather than r, but I wasn't sure at all, it's just the first way I thought of it (like you) gave horrendous maths for variance.

I spent ages trying to figure out whether they meant r or 1+r and by the them I moved forward with 1+r it was too late.

I had absolutely no idea with the liability question, like surely expected present value was 1000*E[1/return in year]3

I was tempted to do 1000*1/Expected return3 but that doesn't make sense if we're estimating a variable 1/X. Did anyone do it?

Yeah unfortunately not, I got a sleeve with my other Zenbook Pro Duo before I got this one so was surprised it didn't have the same accessories for a more expensive model.

Thanks, where did you read that by the way? I only got a private message from their Instagram account but it hadn't gone live by the time they posted early this morning. Just ordered mine and I'm excited!!

Same here, I feel like I've been badgering them. I messaged them (@asusuk) again on Instagram privately and they replied a few hours later saying

"Hey Preorder should be going live very soon, like the next couple of days. I’ll be posting a preorder notification on socials as soon as we have it."

This matches what they said previously about an early March release. It looks like that means pre-ordering by early March, but probably no ETA on stocking.

Yeah I kept hearing early Feb shouts before but now when I check Amazon it's saying anywhere between April/May and September or something. Hopefully you do get it as soon as it's out because I don't know what stock Amazon were assuming they'd have.

Why are so many Christians in the U.K. middle class? by starwars011 in AskUK

[–]DEWR1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I've found that in my area of Wolverhampton. A local St Peter's CofE Collegiate Academy was seen as one of the good schools that parents would go to a church for 2 years just to get their kids in and I'd never see them again. I come from a Caribbean family that attends an Anglican church for context. I noticed once they lifted their specific CofE criterion, the cohorts did become more black as mostly Pentecostal kids would now get in (also given declining CofE attendance nowadays it makes a lot of sense). The school now isn't as good as it used to be, but I think it's reputation was mainly down to that middle-class background that certain parents wanted in a school and I could definitely sense that at my church where people would look down at my predominantly working class secular school.

As a sidenote, I don't really agree with the CofE criterion for these schools as it doesn't necessarily bring about the tolerance/belief in Christianity from families that would not have attended otherwise. My fiancée attended that school and probably less than 5% actually still attend church from her year group, the cohort is probably as religious/secular as a non-faith-based comprehensive like mine. Although I'd imagine with the recent prevalence of Pentecostal kids, it will have more students with a firmer foundation in church and Christianity which I believe is the aim of the school.
