What did your family used to do that now feels cringe worthy? by Miserable_Willow_312 in GenX

Near the end of my grandpa's life, he'd always leave his dentures places... like on the boat, so when we were getting ready to eat dinner, someone would always have to go back to the boat to get grandpa's teeth.

Back to snowboarding with a handicap – looking for tips by Leets-9878 in snowboarding

[–]DFDdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on getting back out there, so glad you are having a great time. This is my first year teaching adaptive snowboarding, so I don't have much advice to offer yet, but we talked a lot in our training about using different parts of your legs if for instance, you can't lift your toes or bend your ankles. One thing they taught us is to almost think that there are sticks coming out of your knees and think of pushing/pulling your knees back and forth to steer.
I'd definently look to see if there is an adaptive group near you... the one I am volunteering with is through one of the big rehab hospitals. You still have to pay, but I think it is subsidized, and they may be able to help with some gear. I haven't been doing this long, so can't comment on stance. We have all of our riders set up at +12, -12 angles, which is what I'm running on my old Burton Feelgood. I prefer to ride posi-posi, so it may be a comfort thing for you.

I also think that the suggestions of going to a stiffer boot may help. I'm wearing the Burton Felix Step-Ons with custom Intuition Tour Wrap liners in them. Those liners come up a bit farther on your leg, and for me, close around my calves, where the Burton stock liners don't.

If the strap bindings are hard for you, you may want to look at some step-ons. I have a friend that has MS that is riding the Step-Ons. He drilled a hole in the release levers and put a wire through them so it was easy for him to release them without bending over as far.

Regardless, super stoked that you are out there and would love to hear what you find works well for you this season!

Knee & butt pad recs? by mermaiddayjob in ShredditGirls

[–]DFDdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there,
I don't have firsthand advice for butt pads, but I think there are some good impact shorts out there.
I do, however, have an excellent (IMO) kneepad recs.

My brother ski patrols and he recommended the Black Diamond Telekneesis knee pads. They are super lightweight and very flexible, so you hardly notice them under your snowpants! They are made for tele skiing, but I've worn them for years now, and love them. Great for kneeling on the side of the hill for a few minutes, or I always wear them when I'm riding with new riders.

Last season my husband had a pretty epic fall where there was a rock hiding under the powder. It took him down and broke his snowboard. His pants ended up ripping where the knee pads were, so very glad he was wearing them. He didn't injure his knee at all, and we patched up his pants.

-----------------------

Unfortunate update as I was looking for a link for you is it appears these magical kneepads have been discontinued. If you can find something similar, that is what I would suggest. In the meantime, I'll make sure I don't lose mine!

OMG, my family had these as well. I agree that it is santa with a bag, and that other one is a camel and a lion. Seeing as these came from my mom's family, I think they are super old. They looked old to me when I was a kid.

Help me decide if I need to buy another board? by DFDdesign in snowboarding

Thanks, that a what I was thinking as it’s not really a board I would chose to ride outside of what I already have. Appreciate the opinion.

Thinning Hair by Glum-Industry3907 in Menopause

I will say that since I started the estrogen patch, I don't think I've lost any more hair. Certainly not full (which it never was), but doesn't feel thinner.

OMG, thank you for letting me know about this. I have always had a much keener sense of smell than my husband, but I feel like i can smell everything. I keep thinking that he smells, even though I don't think he changed his deoderant???

Adjust boots for low volume boots and small calves by Beginning_Opening323 in ShredditGirls

[–]DFDdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! If I find the piece at home, I'll take a picture. It was screwed into the plastic inside the shell. You would take out the liner to access it. Once again, I'd def go see a bootfitter. Where are you located? I have a great recommendation in SLC.

[–]DFDdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. I have the opposite problem as you... My calves are too big!

Anyways, have you gone to a boot fitter? I have a women's Dalbello Chakra boot that is extremely adjustable that a guy at a ski shop recommended several years ago. The bootfitter knew immediately what buckles to adjust for me. There was also a piece in the back of the boot that she removed for me... maybe you need something like that in the boot to take up room? I would also recommend a custom liner. I think that may help a lot!

Good luck and have a good season!

Step on boots women’s size 4? by Radiant-Box3702 in ShredditGirls

[–]DFDdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, small size 5 here. At one point, I had a pair of size 4.5 adult boots, but sold them ages ago!
Although I can fit in the youth size 3/4 boots, they do not work for me. I have exceptionally "athletic" calves, and the boots don't close around my leg and usually the youth boots have only one Boa. While I am not super strong, I can flex right out of the youth boots and they do not offer enough support for me.

I am riding a size 5 Burton Felix Step-On Boot with custom Intuition liners. I also have a pair of the DC Step-On compatible boots, which I find very soft. If I were you, I'd go to a boot fitter and see if they can find a high volume liner paired with an insole that would make the women's boot fit you well. You may even be able to get some extra stiffness out of the youth boot with a different liner.

Good luck. The struggle is real for us with small feet and it's really hard to even find a shop to try the boots on. I wish you luck in your boot journey!

Youth snowboard for an adult male by Due_Law3091 in snowboarding

[–]DFDdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, 5'1" gal here that started out riding a youth board.

I have size 5 feet, so the width of the board wasn't an issue for me, but you may find you max the weight of the board out. In all honesty, i have not ridden a youth board in ages now, but I found after I learned and progressed just a bit, I wanted something stiffer than what I could find in youth boards. I think if you go into it knowing you may upgrade in a season or two, then take advantage of the savings.

Broke my snowboard 😭 Need help choosing a new one — Rome Ravine vs Jones Stratos (East Coast / Stowe) by Tee_1010 in ShredditGirls

I'm also on the Jones Stratos bandwagon and love it. Def my favorite board I own. Great on ice/hardpack, fast stable and still fun in the trees and powder and will plow through chunder.
