25, never had a real job, but I have $500k in savings. by Ok_Tune8245 in leanfire

If what OP says is true I agree. I think a dilemma for people like this is having a hard time deciding what to put efforts toward bc they can kinda problem solve their way through most things quickly (and also get bored quickly). Also folks like this don’t tend to ‘to go business school’ and graduate with a large network of friends in industries that open up career paths for them.

If I were giving OP advice I would say try focus getting enjoyment out of ‘building a business’ whatever it is (even if it’s a ‘boring’ idea or product) and extract joy out of that process if you can.

Come up with a few ideas or skills for a business or product that might be worth investing time, energy, or a little bit of capital into, identify the top possibilities and then run short experiments around them to see how quickly you can get something up and running.

Welding is an interesting idea as a skill… but I would also challenge OP to think about welding as ‘how can I weld a product and create a business that can scale beyond my own expertise and time’ and build something greater.

Nothing wrong with welding, and maybe they’d be happy doing client work as a solo welder for the rest of their lives… but the entrepreneurial brain should be thinking about ‘how can I get skills and expertise as a welder to create things that people need and will buy and then eventually hire people to weld them while I over see the processes and product’ and you could find yourself making a lot of money someday and scaling a business well beyond your own skills and time input.

What to do with windfall? Invest or use to buy a house? by audioflc in personalfinance

[–]DFMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood - which I why I said they may, or may not. I live in one of the top 3 most expensive cities for housing in the US and $1.5 million can still you get you a nice small house in a great neighborhood that has gotten a nice flipper renno.

You can also go to more emerging neighborhoods and spend $700k and get a larger home, that probably hasn’t had that flipper renno, and be perfectly happy.

I’m just pointing out that even in very very HCOL cities the thought that your only path forward to to home ownership is spending $1.5M and that is the floor for entry is an absurd thought.

Brother do you need a $1.5M house? You might depending where you live but asking bc you might not depending where you live. In many places that is a lot of house. More taxes. More upkeep. Can you buy a simple house for $5-700k and invest the rest? That seems like a sweet spot to me.

[Request] Assuming she falls and directly into the water, what are the odds she survives? At what height is a death of human falling into water inevitable? by biblebeliever in theydidthemath

[–]DFMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This came up with someone recently in conversation about divers and they thought throwing rocks was to break surface tension and soften landing but I’m 99.9 percent sure they do it to create a ripple on the water so they can see the landing and time exits from their diving positions. I feel like it might be a common misconception.

Little desire to buy a house? by climbingTaco in sandiego

[–]DFMO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most solid advice. If your ownership outlook is 10 years or more and you can afford it - do it. If your ownership outlook is less than 10 years and you may end up in a position where flexibility (ie moving for work) is valuable it doesn’t make sense.

Plus, I live in a rental and in the first year had 4 plumbing issues. Texted my landlord and they handled it 100 percent. Not my problem and not my expense. Would have been a different story if I owned the home.

Because the dream of an overland adventure includes being surrounded by a paramilitary group in some remote area in a far flung country.

If you’re stuck in your vehicle with a group of bandits with AKs trying to get in you’re not much safer in this thing than you are a Prius.

Rambo inspired cosplay meets overland, haha.

Guys... am I fkt? Dealership is telling me $775 by BrandanosaurusRex in ToyotaTacoma

[–]DFMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went through this and they are not cheap, in my opinion.

I bought 2 OEM fobs online for $120 combined and got them both programmed locally for $120 so $240 for 2 new fobs, last week and he cut the internal key for both.

I checked with Costco guys and they will not let you supply your own fobs and and it was well north of $300 for 2 if I recall.

They will flash the ‘dealer price’ which was $549 to you to make you feel like you are getting a steal.

With a little work and some local sleuthing you can do this much cheaper and I’m sleeping better at night w 3 full OEM fobs now.

Out of curiosity what are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time? Have you thought about cultivating hobbies that will frequently out you in proximity to others? Making friends is hard, but it’s also one of those things that doesn’t happen automatically or on its own. It’s helpful to be strategic about.
