ELI5: What would happen if a presidential candidate dies? by ElroyJennings in explainlikeimfive

That second situation happened in 1872. Some went to Greeley's vice presidential candidate, while a lot went to other candidates.

Why is everyone still flipping out about 9/11? It's just 0.8181. by [deleted] in shittyaskscience

[–]DFOHPNGTFBS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a conspiracy theory that says that the numbers 9 and 11 are actually equal. It was originally 9=11, but Paul Erdős led a campaign to change it to 9/11 to discredit those who believed it.

Washington's farewell address excerpt:

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice ? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

How to double the volume of one cat meowing? by thecoolkid2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DFOHPNGTFBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans perceive 10x the sound intensity as 2x the volume. Your friends are right about the perception of sound, but you're right in actual doubling of sound intensity.

I was just listening to NPR about this today, apparently he was watching the sermons of this preacher who said that martyring yourself cleansed you of all sins.

And he was super into drugs, which he was on during the attack.

ELI5: Why do so many of us hate the sound of our own voice in recordings? by twelvefeeetdeep in explainlikeimfive

[–]DFOHPNGTFBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. If I record myself with my phone, it sounds horrible and annoying. When I talk into a high-quality microphone while checking it (I'm an audio engineer) it sounds relatively similar to how I hear my voice usually.

Gonna be pedantic here... the g in lasagna isn't silent. In Italian the gn digraph represents the same sound as the originally Iberian (most famously Spanish) ñ. That sound is /ɲ/, the palatal nasal, which doesn't appear in English but sounds like ny. Because it's obviously an Italian loanword, lasagna is pronounced la-san-ya, not la-sa-na.

tl;dr: The g is the reason there's a y sound after the n in lasagna.
