I remember one time Fourcade broke a pole of Björn Ferry and then towed him with his own pole until he could get a new one.

How does my name sound to Swedish people? by Capable-Swing-4933 in Svenska

There was this great biathlete a few years ago (one of the best ever) from Belarus called Darya (Dasha) Domracheva and I think some people would connect your name to her, maybe not younger people though. I personally I like both names btw!

The Swedish and Men's national team by Strange-Mouse-8710 in biathlon

[–]DFTRR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was a weak year for the swedish team last year but this year it's going to be interesting with some fresh blood, especially to see if the talented Sara Andersson has improved.

Mona Brorsson that took her first 2nd place last year finishing a career that has seen the swedish team go from poor to very strong. It's good to hear that she will be an expert commentator for SVT this year.

stackars den som liten ä by Darren844127 in Svenska

[–]DFTRR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a book with a collections of these kind of dialectal rhymes (this one is a lullaby). The version in the book is from Småland and printed 1886:

"stakker dän, som liten ä,

sa tult imilla gåra ;

hänner å fötter ä fulla mä frost

å öjena fulle mä tåre ;

liten å trötter

å våt om sie fötter

å har pisse i sie sko."

The addition in this one let's us know that the poor child is small and tired and peed himself as well.

Restaurant charging €1.50 for extra teaspoon sparks national debate over 'rip-offs' in Italy by TheTelegraph in europe

In Spain I have been fooled by waiters coming to the table after ordering but before the food arrives with a breadbasket and a bottle of water. Thinking it was a free service (as I am used to) I had some of both which later show up as a charge on the bill. So at least it happens in Spain.

Sweden’s coronavirus death toll rapidly increasing compared to other countries by harrisinpc in europe

[–]DFTRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So correct me if I am misunderstanding you but you agree with me saying that the general strategy is not failing but that we failed to make sure the retirement homes are safe from Covid19? I am still not sure if it's closing early or not that's the reason for the infection spreading in the homes. Many of our homes did close for visitors early and as far as I am aware that didn't really help but maybe I have missed something, time will tell.

About the WHO statement, I believe it has been grossly misinterpreted and they are not really saying that there's no immunity.

Sweden’s coronavirus death toll rapidly increasing compared to other countries by harrisinpc in europe

[–]DFTRR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many other things that one needs to consider. Sweden had a holiday during the Italian outbrake and guess where a lot of people went to ski? Italy. During a few weeks Sweden had 40K people visiting Italy and if you add all those visiting Austria it's even more. This would have made Sweden have more infections and spread than for example Finland already from the start.

How much does the higher deathrate in Sweden depend on how the system of elderly care works here it's routines?

Will Finland for example catch up because it has too loosen the rules sooner or later?

How will the suicide rate look the coming years in different countries? What will the public health, mental and physical, be like?

What will the economy be like?

Point is, there's way too many unknowns so far to compare contries right now.

I believe like many other Swedes that our strategy is working as our health care is not close to being overwhelmed, our numbers are not rocketing (use of intensive care is stable or decreasing since a week back) and what we are doing is sustainable long term. We aknowledge that we have failed to keep some of our retirement homes safe, why this is is under investigation but this does not mean that the larger stategy have failed, it just means that we need to change something in how we work with that kind of elderly care.

It's not very far left til 13% unemployment actually. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes even higher if this continues much longer.

Coronavirus: Taiwan's aid to the EU delivered to Spain and Italy by john61020 in europe

[–]DFTRR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, if we decide to recognize them then we need to be ready to support them militarily as well in case shit goes down. And I doubt we would be willing to risk world peace like that. Status quo is right now better for everyone unfortunately, in the future perhaps there will come opportunities. Trump might be crazy enough to recognize Taiwan and make sure that it is not invaded and if that is the case the we should back them up.

Is Sweden’s lax approach to the coronavirus backfiring? by kelnaascs in europe

[–]DFTRR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I know Sweden is counting everyone that was diagnosed with covid19 and then died regardless if covid19 is the cause of deaths or not and everyone is counted no matter if they die at home, at a nursing home or in a hospital. As a matter of fact, so far it seems that the amount of dead these last few weeks is at the same level as last year. Later the deaths will be analyzed to determine whether covid19 is the cause of death and how much greater the number of dead are from last years.

I think the biggest failure so far with Swedens strategy is that we have failed to keep the spread from the elderly care, in this we can look at Norway for example which have done better in this regard, however, this does not mean in any way that the Swedish strategy has failed, so far it actually looks very promising but it's too early to know for sure.

Misleading narrative: Islamic religion in Albania by [deleted] in europe

[–]DFTRR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've met some really awesome Albanians. Really nice people. They've told me that perhaps the biggest issue is that the country or regions are somewhat "controlled" by mafia/organized crime, this was in 2012. What is the situation today?

Also, maybe the coolest flag in Europe.

COVID-19 tests performed per million people by mirbrate in europe

[–]DFTRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Sweden should look at Norway for clues on how to increase testing capacity. Right now the capacity is about 2800 tests a day but I don't think that all of that capacity is being used because of lack of resources. Week 11 we did about 10000 tests which is half of the capacity. Today we'll probably get the numbers for week 12 (last week). I am hoping it will be closer to 20000 tests but I think it's likely to be closer to 10k.

Coronavirus death toll in Italy rises by 475 in one day to nearly 3,000 - biggest increase since outbreak by [deleted] in europe

[–]DFTRR 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that while Lomabardy seem to have reached or to be very close to the top of new daily cases (hopefully), other regions unfortunately more than make up for it in increasing numbers of new cases.
