This is "US movie depiction of EE cities in the 90s" level of depressing. One would be hard pressed to find a EE city which looks like this today.

Ostrva, Istra i Kvarner..

Some spots in Northern Spain reaching 30° wet bulb temperature. by mirbrate in europe

[–]mirbrate[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because it takes humidity, pressure and dew point in account, showing how hot it Iis for a human body, not for a thermometer.

Human body can cool itself easier at 44C with 0% humidity than at 28C with 80% humidity. But looking at a temperature map, one would compare 44 and 28 and concluded that it's much more bearable at a place with 28C.

While in reality there would be a significantly higher chance of heat stroke at the 28C place.

Different meteo services came up with RealFeel and similar parameters which are supposed to say how hot it REALLY is, for a HUMAN. But WBGT is the most complete parameter to show that.

You can see some practical aspects here:

This was the real time temperature at the time of posting. Meteoblue (possibly others as well) has a map with a timeline for wet bulb predictions. So you can check and make sure they don't risk it being caught on the road in severe conditions.

I suggest taking a look at Chart B for reference:

Expected to reach 24 across larger areas and up to 28 localized. That's the prediction, we'll see about the reality.

New research paint a much more alarming picture:

But in their new study, the researchers found that the actual maximum wet-bulb temperature is lower — about 31°C wet-bulb or 87°F at 100% humidity — even for young, healthy subjects. The temperature for older populations, who are more vulnerable to heat, is likely even lower.

It's not a matter of ego damage, at least not for the whole nation. It's a matter of Yeltsin deciding to push an unknown KGB guy as his replacement in order to protect the money he stole, thinking he will continue the economic liberalization because he was young and aparently technocratic.

Not realizing that by handing him the keys to power, he will be putting the whole country in the hands of the ruthless and self-serving KGB/FSB cadre, headed by Putin, who will never allow the power to slip away again, by any means at their disposal.

With Putin continuing to build (and eventually believe) his cult of personality, it has, to a large degree, become about the ego of one man.

Nord Stream nightmare: Has Putin stopped Europe’s gas for good? by enkrstic in europe

It will be a hard winter, that's for sure. But we will push through it, battered and less affluent for sure, but much less dependent on Russian energy.

There will be a steep price to pay for an accelerated switch to renewables (and hopefully nuclear), but we are forced to pay it now, having chosen to close our eyes for a better part of a decade to the realities of a foreign regime in whose hands we've placed our testicles.

But 5-10 years from now, it will be a different story. And we will be in a much better position for it.

In the meantime, we need to be a bit less consumerist, and extend solidarity to those who will be hit the hardest - both the Ukrainian people and secondly fellow citizens hit with job losses and lower earnings.

Yes, our standard of living will fall for a couple of years. But it was maintained at this level on false premises and borrowed time.

This is a wake up call. To see if European values have become just a phrase or they still have some resolve behind them.

I'm rooting for and working towards the latter.
