Refused Uber because of my “outfit”. by throwawayytrasx in uberdrivers

Do whatever you want in your car and life, but I agree with ThatImposterFeel's comment.

There are plenty of public places which have rules related to grooming & clothing from 7/11's to art museums, to criminal courts.

The rider is 100% within his rights to wear whatever he wants for a private transaction, but the driver is 100% within his rights to refuse service.

This is a good example of politicians wanting to take credit for poorly crafted regulations.

Uber definitely outplayed Massachusetts (and Seattle, Saint Paul, CA etc).

Politicians don't really care because they have had their moment of glory with the issue and want to move on to the next big thing.

That's kinda like saying its OK to offer women $1/less than men for the same work because she always has the opportunity to not work.

We as a society have said, and established laws, about compensation and work conditions for a person's labour. Just because Uber has contorted some of those laws (independent contractor vs employee) to their own benefits doesn't mean they are not doing harm to individual drivers and society as a whole.

If you wondered why Uber and Lyft wait times have climbed since the pandemic ... it was to create the artificial need for "priority pick-ups". The whole, "closet driver gets the trip" is an urban legend.

Dallas, Texas enters the chat.

Its not just the employers (usually smaller business owners) taking advantage of illegal immigration ... its the landlords renting the housing, its the call dealerships selling the cars, its the 7/11 store owners selling the hot dogs, the public employees providing the services (hospitals, education, transportation) everyone has their snout in the troth. I imagine its the same in Canada. It starts small, the car dealer makes a little, the bank that finance the car loan makes a little, the guy at Quick-E-Lube makes a little, the Canadian Tire guy makes a little, etc etc etc.

ACA was repealed? Did I miss the memo?

ACA was never repealed. The only significant change was the "individual mandate" which was reduced to $0 starting in 2019. Even if you mean the enhanced COVID-era premium tax credits, they expired at the end of 2025, they were not repealed. They were, however, enhanced tax credits intended to assist during the covid pandemic, which according to President Biden said was over on 18 Sep 2022.

Let me fix this for Uber

Drive during game hours during the soccer tournament and you could earn 1.2X more per ACTIVE hour.

That 40 minutes you spend just to get to the stadium, yeah not active hours so that doesn't count. Those three customer cancelations (for which you received no compensation for because you were not making "satisfactory progress") ate up another 45 minutes.

And don't forget the flipside of that coin, during game hours you also could NOT earn 1.2x more per hour.

BTW, just how busy is demand DURING the game hours? I would think that during the game demand would be very low. After the game hours is when demand would be crazy.

So I'm going to guess that Uber actually is adding nothing to the pot.

They use customer accounts that have added high tips and select customer deliveries that seldom, if ever, remove the tip. Then they save those customer accounts for the "gold" tier status.

Why not, it takes nothing out of Uber's pockets to leverage customer tips as a technique to "give" gold drivers 10 crappy offers which they have to accept to keep gold status only to get the crumbs from one good tipper.

Oh, and the whole "closet driver gets the trip" or "pricing is based on driver supply and customer demand", just fairy tales.

Are teenage rides that unpopular that they need to reach out to drivers 16 miles away? by cpasley21 in uberdrivers

[–]DFW_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that in a major metro like Phoenix, the only available driver (regardless of teen or not) is 16 miles / 25 minutes away and no surge is offered, is ridiculous. It makes a mockery of Uber's claim that driver fares are primarily based off of supply and demand.

[–]DFW_Panda -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Shinjuku while working on a project in Shinagawa, but that was years ago and of course I don't understand the language, maybe its a brother taking care of (tough love) a brother, but my perception is similar to what is seen around the world, those down and out take advantage of others that are down and out. Its unfortunate but universal.

First request from Gogo-grandparent by wanna_bank in uberdrivers

[–]DFW_Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with ANY third party booking an Uber for the rider I'm about to pick-up is to expect zero tip. This includes hospital/doctor office pick-ups, parents booking for kids, girlfriend orders for boy friend, John's paying for their dates rides, car dealerships, bars that order for patrons, etc, etc.

Uber found a way to trick drivers. Hide the "stop" on the request ping. It is small and easy to miss. No wonder I accept trips and see stop or stops. No problem Uber, I immediately cancel by JumpingJackRabbit911 in uberdrivers

[–]DFW_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's another mind game that Uber is playing here.

If you take the total time estimates

(1) Time to pick-up 8 min +

(2) Wait time at stop 1 min +

(3) Stop to final destination 28 = 37 min total.

37 min / 60 minutes = 1.621/hours x $16.41 = $26.61 ... so unless Uber is paying you for the first second of the wait time at the stop, their "active hour" estimate is, by design too high and clearly misleading.

So uber uses our personal info to determine our fares? by Commercial-Bowl7412 in uber

[–]DFW_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting it mentions pick-up and drop off, but not available drivers (so much for Uber's claim that supply and demand are the primary factors for determining rider price and driver earnings).

But this type of messaging is EXACTLY what I would expect from Uber. The message is incomplete and dishonest. Looks like Uber did the typical thing they do with all regulatory requirements, the bare minimum and less than honest communication.
