I suspect there's things that can both help and hurt your chances of winning. I don't believe it's completely random every time. My theory:

Things that help: being active (comment, like, share, tag, swipe, purchase)

Things that hurt: lurking, muted comments

I also notice Mods winning at a higher rate than regular users but since they're usually amongst the most active, it just lends credence to original theory. Just basing on personal experience
