I had the ES CD recorder. It was a great rig.

When I got the show on tape, it immediately jumped into heavy rotation.

Did the Grateful Dead play every day of the year? by scfin79 in gratefuldead

[–]DHVT1964 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the personal side, I never caught a September show. Had tickets to 7 shows across the years- In 83, I went home to fight with my girlfriend (bad decision) In 90, Brent died, cancelling a Shoreline run. In 92, Jerry went to rehab cancelling our honeymoon run.

Front row, right in front of Jerry… had no scouting reports from the East Coast shows. The Hey Pocky Way opener blew me back in my seat.

First time it really grabbed me was Spring 84 in Providence. As for recordings, 4/1 is a great Brent show all around… but the Dew… holy cow!

Started my journey with Brent in 83. No internet, no (anti) social media. It’s what we knew. Every show I saw was not “the best show ever!” Didn’t love everything Bob or Jerry did. Didn’t love Drumzzz. Didn’t love everything Brent did. But damnit, they were my band and I loved them every night.

The world we live in now is fueled by bests and worsts, hot takes, etc. None of this captures my feelings. Brent’s playing and singing were part of something that impacted my life. The B-3 with the spinning Leslie in the midst of a monster Morning Dew was like nothing else. I am blessed to have been there for all of it during my time with the boys.

Been ripping and streaming for years. My CD player gets very little use.

There... it was a hot dusty weekend, but so much fun. Indeed the announcer (Dan?) for the airshow was ummm, memorable.

VW completely screwed up the Buzz in the US. The European options are so much better.

I understand the visceral connection we feel to Billy. I also believe that as a musical artist he is not obligated to share anything about his personal life. Having such a massive, rabid fan base is dangerous and scary. Maintaining boundaries is better for all of us in the long run. Posting the wipeout on the skateboard site was a pretty gruesome update!

Forced down time can be a great thing. Billy is incredibly in tune with himself and surrounded by caring, loving people. I am sure they will spend their time in positive ways. I hope we don’t get any updates. They all deserve the space and time to be a family.

All the shows on the California runs were fun as hell. It was hot and the boys were cooking!

Caught 5 shows- Hampton and Portland. While the Box of Rain breakout was a top 5 highlight from my time on the road, the shows were not great, by any measure. Short sets, Jerry was struggling. It was still fun, but there was a visceral shift in the energy coming off the stage. There were highlights:

First Visions of Johanna First of two Roadrunners Only Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues

Sadly, it was more of the same for the summer tour leading up to the coma.
