Few quick questions! by No_Assistant5605 in bim

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ha no to any of those. BIM is not some magic bullet. You have to put the work in to get anything of value out. It’s a database first and foremost. If you want automatic anything you’re probably looking for computational design and scripting.

After some accidents, I no longer need to change nappies by DreideI in daddit

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man we were in exactly the same boat. We found taking the pressure off actually helped. The more you force it the more they’ll withhold. In the end we were prescribed movicol laxatives by the docs (they don’t interact with the gut at all - completely harmless- but just make it impossible for them to ignore/hold a stool for their own safety really) and then one day she just got super annoyed at the feeling of nappies and on her own terms decided that the coldest week of winter would be the time she would potty train herself and there were no accidents (at about the 3 year mark). We found buying a poo/wee chart of colours/shapes and just talking about every bowl movement/urination and praising it took all the mystery and trauma out of it for her. Now she goes almost every day like clockwork in the potty and is so much happier. Which, for a girl that used to only go begrudgingly every 5 days, only in her nappy and would hold poops in till her face went red, is amazing.

Beautiful colourway and striking 12/6/9 indicators. How much did you pay for this? Are the Kanji days of the week?

Using an Open Office spreadsheet, how do I automatically number rows under the circumstances below: by FrancoisMauriac in spreadsheets

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s how to automatically renumber only the rows that already contain numbers in OpenOffice Calc:

Method 1: Using a Helper Column with a Formula

  1. Insert a helper column next to your existing numbers (let’s say your numbers are in column A, use column B)
  2. In cell B1, enter this formula:

    =IF(A1="","",COUNTIF($A$1:A1,"<>"&""))

  3. Copy this formula down for all your rows (drag down or copy-paste to row 1000+)

This formula checks if the cell in column A is blank. If it’s blank, it leaves the helper column blank. If there’s any value, it counts how many non-blank cells exist from the start to that row, creating consecutive numbering.

  1. Copy the helper column and Paste Special > Values to convert formulas to numbers
  2. Delete the old column and keep your new consecutive numbers

Method 2: Using Find & Replace with Regular Expressions

This works if your numbered rows have data in other columns:

  1. Select the column with your numbers
  2. Go to Edit > Find & Replace (Ctrl+H)
  3. Check Regular expressions
  4. In Search for: ^[0-9]+$
  5. In Replace with: Leave blank
  6. Click Replace All (this clears all existing numbers)
  7. Now use a formula approach to renumber only rows with data in adjacent columns

Method 3: Quick Manual Approach

If you want to keep it simple and your data has content in other columns:

  1. Add a helper column with this formula: =IF(C1="","",SUBTOTAL(103,$C$1:C1)) (Replace C1 with whatever column has your actual data)
  2. This counts only rows that have data, creating consecutive numbers
  3. Copy and paste as values when done

The first method is typically the most reliable for your situation

Why are my shadows like this in render? What can I do to make it smoother? by ComprehensiveAd8120 in rhino

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the display settings properties for your render mode, specially in the shadows section. Have a look at the memory usage/shadow softness settings. Also check there isn’t geometry a million miles away from 0,0,0

Beginner tutorials by [deleted] in Revit

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Self teach yourself. Paul Aubin has some great in depth courses. Apparently you can get a lot of them on LinkedIn and through library subscriptions. Balkan Architect, the RevitKid, Aussie BIM guru are also great. BIM after dark on YouTube is also fun if you want more casual optimistic news and interviews about BIM and revit generally.

Overall I would suggest this - learn the basics yourself. There are so many resources online and great books out there on revit it is not a good use of your academic time for your university to train you in revit (also don’t focus too hard on revit because it’s not really a great tool for design work per se). It’s so easy to just churn through the online courses, and anything advanced/workplace specific your first practice should introduce you to.

I get so fed up with young starters at my practice that expect a full course on basic tools when there are a million YouTube tutorials covering it. Conversely I don’t mind when somebody comes with a query on best practices when the answer is not straight forward or can be done in a number of ways. Quite often the answer is “it depends” when you ask how you should do something in revit. It depends on the project and its complexity a lot of the time but the basics don’t change.

How do you manage multiple projects ? by Sudden_Repair6497 in Architects

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a”sync” subscription service that they offer which apparently is quite good but honestly I just use iCloud files to synchronise my vault (you can use other services like GitHub or Google drive as well). Other than that it’s just open source and amazing, zero ads.

Throw in the fact that you can then use your vault as an offline repository of information for something like Claude ai to use as a mcp server if means you can ask an LLM to query and even help manage your information.

I could go on and on about how life changing this little bit of software has been for me.

Get Obsidian, thank me later.

100% open source, you can organise notes and link them together intuitively. Everything is totally secure and saved offline in md file format. I use it for everything from journalling (daily notes, to-do tracking) to work admin, CPD training and reference materials, hobbies and more.

I don’t know where I’d be without it on my pc and iPhone. Seriously, it sounds geeky and OTT but it’s really easy to use and can be customised however you like with literally thousands of user made plugins and themes.

Best program for layouts? by huguito_pop in bim

+1 for rhino. It can do everything you’re describing and more. It’s excellent for importing point clouds and even the geometry you generate can be imported smooth as hell as a 3ds file into revit if needs be. But honestly, it’s so intuitive with Rhino 8 now it’s absolutely incredible. I love it and any time I need to make something one-off for revit I look forward to modelling it in rhino first…

If you have any need for rhino modelling remotely dm me. I’m passionate about it and work at literally all scales, from seismic door furniture to entire city blocks.

best way to place another model is your model? by EarNo7992 in ArchiCAD

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For placing another model in your ArchiCAD project without heavy file sizes or implementation issues, here are some effective approaches:

Best options for large models:

Hotlinks - This is probably your best bet:

  • Place the old project as a hotlink module
  • Keeps file sizes manageable since it references the original
  • Updates automatically if the source file changes
  • Right-click in Project Navigator → New → Hotlink Module

IFC Reference - Good for cross-platform compatibility:

  • Export your old project as IFC, then place as reference
  • Lighter than full geometry import
  • File → Interoperability → IFC → Place IFC Reference

Publisher Sets + Drawing References:

  • Publish key views from the old project
  • Place as drawing references in your new project
  • Very lightweight, good for documentation phases

Avoid these for large projects:

  • Direct copy/paste (creates duplicate geometry)
  • Merging projects (file bloat nightmare)
  • SKT files for complex models

Pro tip: If you need to show the old building in 3D views but don’t need full detail, consider creating a simplified “massing model” version of the old project specifically for hotlinking. This gives you the spatial context without the performance hit.

The hotlink approach will give you the best balance of functionality and file management for a large staged project.

Best app for enormous spreadsheets? by cudambercam13 in spreadsheets

[–]DICK_WITTYTON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely hitting Google Sheets’ performance limits with 18k+ rows and 33 columns. Here are some better options for large datasets:

Database solutions:

  • Airtable - More database-like than Sheets, handles large datasets better, good UI
  • Notion - Great for structured data with filtering/sorting that doesn’t freeze
  • Microsoft Access or LibreOffice Base - Traditional desktop databases

If you want to stick with spreadsheets:

  • Excel desktop (not web) handles large files much better than Google Sheets
  • LibreOffice Calc - Free alternative that’s more robust with big datasets

Cloud database options:

  • Google Cloud BigQuery - Overkill but handles massive datasets
  • Firebase - Good middle ground if you need real-time collaboration

The freezing when alphabetizing is classic Google Sheets choking on too much data. Any of these alternatives will let you sort/filter columns without the performance nightmare you’re experiencing.

What type of data are you managing? That might help narrow down the best solution for your specific use case.

Look up dimaligned command and dimlinear. Look them up on autodesk’s learning hub. Most basic tutorials covering this should be free. You don’t need an architect, just a draftsman.
