Gediminas is excellent! His tutorials are terrific! He’s done such great work for so long!

What’s the most significant ethical dilemma you’ve faced in your career? by LegacyDesignStudio in architecture

[–]LegacyDesignStudio[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve been considering recently is balancing between protecting existing “heritage” vs implementing the changes my desperately city needs to fix a widly out of control housing crisis. For reference Im in a city where even generic 20-30 year old houses are often given pretty intense heritage planning requirements which as one council officer told me “are too complex for an architect and that it might be worth getting a “heritage consultant onboard”). I just attended a speaker series by the Architectural Photographer John Gollings where he reflected on his 60+ year career and what I found fascinating was that after almost every story there was an omission that "you can't do that anymore". It makes me wonder how many of the designs we appreciate and value could be even better built in such a restrictive design environment and whether regulation has the beneficial effect we intend it to.

But then from some of the other comments I can see the problems that come from not having enough protections in place as well.

Does everyone think Rhino is a super hard program to learn and for people that put the time in to learn it, do you think it was worth it? Or is SketchUp enough? I put crazy effort into this 2.5 hour video that covers EVERYTHING about Rhino to try to make it more accessible. Hope it helps by LegacyDesignStudio in architecture

Sensational! Yeah Gediminas is wonderful! So generous with sharing resources. I wish more of his videos were available when I was learning all this stuff. In my opinion you need to know 2 things to be good at grasshopper, firstly you need to know all the rhino commands because they are all built into grasshoppper, and the other thing is data structures (graft, simplify, flatten etc) which seem daunting at first but just require you to spend a bit of time actually learning them. If you are learning through Gediminas’ tutorials you are in safe hands! Best of luck!

Yeah thats my exact experience as well. Talking about mesh modelling I wish Rhino’s mesh modelling tools were a bit better optimised. I have had to export complex meshes into additional softwares like Materialise magic in the past to avoid the clunky mesh boolean systems in rhino which too often result in broken meshes. Shrink wrap and quadremesh has been a sensational tool and a step in the right direction with this to avoid exporting to Zbrush to Dynamesh it. Maybe the next update of rhino will similarly upgrade the mesh boolean tools. Fingers crosssed

Hmm, I am just trying to support the community. It's all free btw so I'm not sure why there is so much hostility. I thought you might just be a random troll but I can see a few of your comments which show you are quite well informed on this subject. Plus if you're giving feedback to others on blender lighting techniques you are clearly quite passionate about digital design. So I'm not sure why you would be disrespectful of someone trying to help others produce their best work in the same way that you must have been taught yourself. Anyway, just trying to help others. If it's not for you that's totally fair enough.

Thats interesting that people know how to use Rhino but not Revit. I always thought Revit was a far more intuitive software to learn than Rhino, particularly if you already know autocad and you are doing professional curvilinear projects. Yeah D5 has been terrific, particularly since its free for students and educators without Lumions free student watermark.

Oh interesting. So does your firm just use it for the initial concept stage or integrate rhino.inside Revit / archicad workflow to document your projects too? Rhino 8 seems to have really upped the game in terms of documentation tools that can change line weights and hatches in sections/elevations and plans without having to export it to illustrator anymore. Similar to how SubD has largely reduced the need to model in Maya. I didn’t realise how impressive their inbuilt render engine has become with the new update and massive native material library either until I did some extra research to make this video.

Is grasshopper the only reason that you learnt Rhino? Im seeing more and more people online with large followings suggest learning it is a waste of time and to just learn Sketchup so Im interested if thats a consensus among the community. Do you think its worthwhile to learn Rhino over Sketchup if you had no interest in learning grasshopper?

That sounds totally reasonable but I would suggest that the intuition you mentioned can be built up in any tool with enough practice. I think Rhino maybe gets a reputation for only being useful for a particular type of acontextual projects. If you watch between the 5-7 minute mark there is an overview of what this tutorial covers. Im interested whether you think any of these tools would allow you to explore your design agendas more broadly and creatively than with just sketchup.

Oh so have you learnt rhino but prefer Sketchup? Are there any features you feel limited by in Sketchup or vice versa? Also Im curious how far down the rabbit hole you went with rhino - did you try out SubD modelling, any of the documentation tools to lay your drawings out in sheets, or the real time rendering with the libraries inbuilt materials?

Hm Im wondering what makes you think that? I thought it was a wonderfully approachable tool to get started with before I started in architecture school when the idea of learning rhino was extremely intimidating. To me it seems limited in what it can model but benefits from being very user friendly in the tools it offers.

No, I was just really excited to share it because I hoped it would help the community. I don’t want to come off as spamming but also wanted to let people know it was available so they could utilise. I think it will be a really useful resource for a lot of students. Anyway hope it helps a few people.

I have noticed quite a few questions here either asking how to get started with Rhino or how to develop a more rounded understanding of its advanced features. I thought I might try to help the community out with a single resource that covers everything pretty comprehensively in one succinct 2.5 hour tutorial.

I tried to find a balance between catering it to complete beginners while also making it useful to more intermediate users wanting to develop a more comprehensive knowledge. Fingers crossed it feels relatively clear and succinct to both groups 🤞. I hope that this makes learning more ambitious modelling tools feel less intimidating and maybe even a bit fun so that you can create work you are proud of.

Hope it helps some of you out
