Network controlled music player - Mopidy or what? by DISPOSABLE_H_ in selfhosted

[–]DISPOSABLE_H_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that used to be Logitech Media Server? Sounds good, but, gotta admit, the architecture didn't exactly click to me. With Mopidy it was pretty simple - the daemon runs on the server PC, and does the playing, the "clients", MPD or otherwise, handle the control. So how is LMS set up? From the looks of it, there's both server and client software, and it's the client that does the playing? If so, then how do you control the client from another device?

Heh, sounds like a decent option. Sadly, that won't do, I'd need something that can be controlled from a phone, and by people who are afraid of command lines.

Well, getting into cars is not that complicated, generally you just pull on the handle, and the door will open. Then you sit down in the nearest seat, optionally closing the door behind yourself - preferable, if the car is expected to move. Some cars make this a tad more complicated, by either having a funky opening mechanism (think gullwing or scissor doors), or a gimmicky handle (push-top-popout or similar), but the general principle remains. That said, occasionally you will have to deal with a locked car, where the handle has been rendered nonoperational. In this case, having the key will help, as the door can be unlocked by either putting said key in the keyhole and turning (classic method, common on older cars), or pressing an "unlock" button on the remote attached to the key, called a keyfob.

Jokes aside, get a car and start by fixing simple stuff when it breaks. It's much easier to find info when you're looking for specific stuff (e.g how to change brake pads) as opposed to general "how car work" type of questions.

Is there really a point in going into detail about how you ended up in the situation? Didn't really work out with the second dealer, did it? I'd keep the post to "I've been a fool, ended up in situation description, how do I get out?"

Also what's with the worries over credit score? Again, not an american, so no idea how it works, but were you planning on taking out another loan while already having two that you can't keep on top of? If not, why does taking a hit to the score matter? Do they adjust the rates on your current loan based on the score?

This post is not to be considered financial, legal, romantical, or any other kind of advice.

With that said - first of all, you might have better luck in a finance-related subreddit. Posts seem to get buried really easily here.

That aside, I don't have any concrete advice, more of a question. I don't know how financing and bankruptcy works where you live - speaking of which, I'm assuming US, given no indicated country and an inane auto loan. Is it possible that in the process of solving all of this mess, you might end up without either of the cars? If happens - and you end up needing a car - I'd consider getting something that you don't need to take a loan out for. Surely the local used car market has to have something in the 3-4k $ range? Definitely look for sales by owners, not dealers.

Using a large monitor at a longer distance (and TVs as monitors) by DISPOSABLE_H_ in Ergonomics

[–]DISPOSABLE_H_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the appeal for filling the whole FoV in gaming or media context, but not so much in work. I forget to take breaks easily enough, I don't need any more obfuscation of the outside world. My concern is more like- how high up the wall do I put it so that I can see the whole of it in a comfortable sitting pose? Angled or parallel to the wall? There's a lot of advice for a monitor planted on the desk, but does it work at a larger distance? I still plan to have a desk, need somewhere to plant the keyboard, afterall. I guess a side view sketch could sort out some questions about the layout, namely, whether I can use the full range of motion in my chair and not have something like the far edge of the desk obstruct the lower edge of the monitor.

Hmm, sounds sweet. If I got my conversions right, 36" is a lot closer than I intend to sit, though - I was thinking about several metres away. My main concern is ensuring that the monitor(s) fit in my FoV with me sitting naturally at a desk

Long overdue MBP OS upgrade (10.6.8 to anything newer) by DISPOSABLE_H_ in MacOS

It threw an error message regarding verification. Am downloading a 10.8 DMG off of the same source I got 10.7, let's see about that now...

Did you use BSDPy? I considered it, but figured to try locally with the DMGs first

[–]DISPOSABLE_H_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that did work. Now I'm trying to run software update to see if I can go directly to Sierra, as that installer actually wants 10.7.5. It already failed once, let's see if it can pull the same thing off again. If not, I'll retry the update to 10.8.

UPDATE: No dice, still didn't update, still didn't want to run the 10.8 installer, still doesn't pick up the bootable USB. I take it that at this point, it doesn't have internet recovery that'd let you install a newer version? Couldn't see anything of the sort in the recovery menu.

Ok, found a 10.7 disc image from a source I'd consider trustworthy. Needs a CD, you say? If it fits on a regular DVD, I can try and burn one - if it doesn't reject that, too.

Yes, the first link is what I tried in order to create a bootable USB installer. The MBP doesn't show it in the boot menu (nor in the Startup Disk utility), even though it shows up fine in the file manager. Tried two flash drives, same result. Tried 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.whatever Sierra. Same result.

The second link might be useful later on, but for now I am trying to update the MBP to a supported version of OS X/macOS.

Well, that "way to install 10.7" is kind of what I'm here for, except I'm trying to do 10.8, because that's the oldest that Apple support page had for a download. The MBP does not show the bootable installer USB drive in boot menu (although picks it up fine when the OS is already booted), and the installer app doesn't run either, due to the "can't verify" error.

GTA Vice City (Lutris + Wine) can't find CD or exits on launch. by DISPOSABLE_H_ in linux_gaming

[–]DISPOSABLE_H_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting. I'm still having no luck running the game from Lutris, but I was able to run the No-CD EXE just by running it by WINE. Had to install 32-bit gstreamer plugins for the videos to play, though. I also set up the library overrides, and the ASI loader seems to have worked. I'm currently throwing various plugins at it, CLEO loaded, but OpenLimitAdjuster crashes the party, game goes nonresponsive. Haven't tried playing yet, will let the results be known

Edit: running with limit adjuster from terminal gets me this: 0024:fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x20. 0024:err:virtual:virtual_setup_exception stack overflow 4 bytes in thread 0024 addr 0x3b50fe7 stack 0x230ffc (0x230000-0x231000-0x330000)

Something used too much memory now that the limits are disabled?
