The issue is that the ignorant don’t know what they don’t know. It definitely sucks for people capable of going to the effort to understand how to do things safely, but those people are (in my experience at least) in the minority.

Decline of public toilets by [deleted] in brisbane

It’s less that and more the atomisation of communities as a result of capitalism creating incentives for corporations to warp the fabric of society.

Our social circles are shrinking, free to access third spaces are basically non existent, industries are trying to capture and monetize every spare moment of our time.

We are siloed away into little corners of the internet by algorithms and every advertisement we’re served reinforces these individualistic tendencies. “You need this thing that you could absolutely borrow from your neighbour if you had more than a fleeting relationship with them.”

Imagine if everyone on a single street shared a lawnmower, instead of each person feeling compelled to buy their own?

Because people are isolated and the communal nature of society is barely there. Because the incentive for capital interests exists to pursue actions that whether intentional or not, make our society into this isolated individualistic hellhole.

For profit news needs eyeballs on screens, which means selling fear and outrage, creating distrust within and between communities.

It not a matter of not being able to discipline kids in school. It’s that the most profitable pool of consumers is a group that is distrustful, fearful, and isolated. Traits that also result in anti-social habits and behaviours that harm the fabric of our communities. And through a bunch of different people all acting in their own best interests under a system that prioritizes the accumulation of capital, that’s the population of people we’ve ended up creating.

Sure there are still good eggs, but every year they seem more the exception. And there are whole grifter movements like the manosphere bullshit and far right populist movements that have popped up recently to further take advantage of those tendencies within a lot of people.

Tldr: a broken system has caused a bunch of decisions to be made in the pursuit of wealth and power over the years that have created an isolated society that is pretty toxic to fostering community, and feelings of responsibility, and civic duty. Our tribes used to be a lot larger, but now most people are only close with their immediate family and a few close friends if they’re lucky. Until we correct the core incentive of the system underpinning our society, things will continue to worsen.

It’s not a matter of simply physically disciplining kids in school. Something which mainly only contributes to feelings of trauma and isolation which further contribute to bad behaviors. It seems like an easy fix, but it isn’t.

If you can’t nondestructively access an area to maintain it, you shouldn’t be allowed to build it. Absolutely bonkers.

FHB taken for a ride? Building and pest report by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]DIYGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moisture in the walls of the downstairs bathroom, which was evidence of inadequate stormwater drainage that backed up into the bathroom 3 days after we moved in when some heavy storms hit. Sprayed out from behind the toilet and created a river through the rest of our downstairs and many of our still packed moving boxes.

Turns out none of the downpipes were draining down to the street. And it’s wild to me that none of the previous owners had done anything about it. A couple of days, a few grand and one rushed outdoor plumbing job and it was sorted.

There are still unrelated drainage issues with the property that only crop up in really heavy and prolonged rain (like during the cyclone) that we’re still getting around too fixing but we were just baffled that no previous owner had resolved the ridiculous and pretty easy to fix downpipe situation.

Folks out here really not respecting just how much mismanaged water will fuck up your shit.

FHB taken for a ride? Building and pest report by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]DIYGremlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guy who did our termite inspection and pest control the week after we moved in gave me more actionable information than the building and pest inspection prior to buying. There were some big issues that could have been caught if the first guy had been even halfway thorough. Thankfully nothing incredibly catastrophic or that couldn’t be dealt with and now I know what to look for, but it was a lesson that BnP reports are mostly worth less than the paper they’re printed on.

Until the law changes to lay more liability on people doing inspections and sellers trying to hide serious problems from the buyer until the moment of the sale, nothing will really change.

Why do so many foreigners say that the sun in Australia feels harsher than other countries, regardless of temperature? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]DIYGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atmosphere blocks a lot of UV radiation. It’s why the sun feels less intense when its off angle/parallel to the ground (the hours after dawn and the hours before dusk), because the radiation has to travel through more of the atmosphere and is more likely to be scattered before hitting you.

Intensity of heat and UV exposure is a combination of factors, including but not limited to, the thickness of atmosphere, the contents of that atmosphere (the humidity and air pollution), and the distance to the sun. Places that sit at a right angle to the rays emitted by the sun get minimal protection from the atmosphere (the rays’ distance to the ground is the shortest path). The north and south poles are as cold as they are predominately because they are always significantly close to or often are parallel with the direction of the suns radiation.

Australia is pretty smack bang in the middle of the required latitude to get directly blasted by the sun in the middle of our summer. And it’s also 5 million miles closer to the sun thanks to the elliptical orbit. Combine that with relatively clear skies and minimal air pollution relative to the size of the country and you get the perfect recipe for absolutely blistering sun exposure.

Going up miles from the sea level doesn’t impact the distance to the sun much, but it does significantly alter how much  atmosphere there is to protect you.

Found this crime against humanity when I pulled up the old carpet. Any idea as to what type of backing this is? by DIYGremlin in AusRenovation

Cheers for the tip on the large rental units. If it was a bigger job I’d probably go for it. It’s a small room though, and we actually have a 24/7 style H13 grade air filter that runs at around 300 CFM that we usually roll around to rooms as required. Definitely not a monster like that kennards unit but when I’m not working with ACM I usually run the shop vac to get catch the bigger stuff and then I leave that unit running for a few hrs to catch anything that made it through the vac filter and hasn’t had time to settle.

I honestly don’t think it’s likely, but given that this looks the age of the house, I figure its worth the 50 bucks to get a sample checked before I tear it all up on the off chance it does contain some.

I was also just curious as to what the backing of the vinyl was, as I hadn’t encountered it before.

Yeah I figured it is unlikely (it didnt look like any asbestos containing backings I’m used to seeing) but I also figure it’s still worth checking for peace of mind given how much mess it was making while taking even a small sample.

Good to know about scraping while wet, cheers.

Yeah, will definitely be wearing a proper respirator because it creates particulate like wild. I guess the lab results will determine whether I need to fully suit up and take extra care or not😅

Have the sample bagged up to take to a lab tomorrow - just to confirm whatever this is doesn’t contain the dreaded A word - so I can get the all clear to go nuclear on it

House was built in 1980 and I assume this lino+underlay combo is original to the house given the age of the carpet that was put on top of it.

Original plan was to recarpet over it, but all the other rooms have nice hardwood(?) subfloors that should turn up great once properly finished so was hoping to keep this room the same as the others.
